Jack Rabbit
I tried the working hard thing. I promised myself i would be career driven from now on. Find my place as a nurse in the right hospital, get in my groove. Worry about the whole family thing later. Besides, dating never seemed to be something I enjoyed, at least not with boys my age.
Her x Jack Abbott, Doctor x Nurse head cannon (The Pitt)- Power play, age gap, praise and slow burn delicious tension... enjoy ✨
My shift at the hospital started early today. Something about a shooting happening in one of the business centres nearby. I was suppose to start my first night shift tonight, there was nothing like starting five hours earlier than I was suppose to. Would totally help ease me into the shift. At least thats what one of the student doctors, Joy, joked as I stuffed my clothes into the locker.
Black scrubs, blondish hair tied up messily, coffee stains on my grey henley from the morning shift at the cafe i pulled the day before, I was deliriously ready for work. Two jobs to afford housing in the area on a nurses salary. But it was my passion right? Working hard to help those in need.
Joy laughed one more time as she looked me over and I rolled my eyes before following her away from the staff room and out into the chaotic mass of people I could hear moaning and groaning from down the hall.
The stench of copper met my nostrils about five seconds before I walked into the bloody horror show that was the emergency department. Patches of blood red prickled at every corner of my sight and I fought the wave of nausea that threatened my stomach as I took in the scene before me.
It was bad.
To my right a man covered head to toe in blood was being resuscitated, the crack of his chest somehow louder than the echoing screams of pain surrounding me. To my left, a woman trampled, pieces of bone stuck through her skin and the screams that came from her were enough to make the hairs on my arms stand up.
I had a decision to make here. Left or right. I chided myself, repremanding myself for thinking. Don't think, act. It should all be intuitive by now. At least thats what my day shift attending, Dr Robby always told me. So with the fluidity of a ballerina, I weaved in between patients, doctors and nurses grabbing sterile gloves, a sedation kit and our portable vital signs monitor, I rushed over to the woman.
My hands moved fast, stabilizing her the best I could so I could get a needle in her arm. The woman was flailing, the adrenaline of the attack surely making her wild. I felt something similar, my strength kicking in, a slight groan falling out of my mouth as I struggled to keep the woman down. There was a restraint on the side of the bed, her good arm was much stronger than her injured one so i placed an elbow above her compound fracture to restrict the blood gushing wound. The other arm I couldn't capture.
A feeling of hopelessness and panic tingled my chest as I looked around the room trying to find someone, anyone to help me. The woman was screaming in my ear, muffling the calls of help I sang. I could feel the sweat prickling on my head already, I couldn't hold her for much longer and if I let her go she would be a far worse harm on herself, flailing that fracture around would give her permanent nerve damage. I pressed down, using my weight to hold while I made one last futile attempt to steady her.
And just as I was ready to give up, a long veiny arm reached across me as pressed the woman down until both free flying arms were pinned to the bed. A man, black shirt, army pants and a wild expression motioned me to finally sedate her. Without another thought, I ran to his side and reached across him to where her arms were pinned in his strong hands.
The sedation took a minute to kick in but as it did, I stared at the man barking commands to the people that were finally rallying over in our direction. I watched the vein in his pale freckled neck throbbed along with the quiet thrum of my heart as he commanded the room. His voice was rough and pitchy, almost as if he was used to screaming. The army pants began to make more and more sense the more I studied him. Hair pushed back, curly and cut down at the sides, a well lined face and eyes that had definitely seen enough for a lifetime. Muscle corded his arms and I could see the outline of his large shoulders and a tough abdomen under his shirt.
"HEY" came his voice snapping me out of his daze. He shook his head reprimanding me but the hint of a smile perked at his lips as he caught my distraction.
"What do we do next?" he pointed his question at me while sweeping his eyes down down down just as I had done to him. Something clenched in me as I found him watching me, waiting for an answer. I swallowed and his gaze fixed on my throat as I did.
"Stabilize the wound, start a line, vitals, page surgery." my lips moved before I could stop them. The student doctors looked up at me and nodded before scrambling off to follow my instruction. A dip of pride swirled in my chest as I looked back over at the doctor, eyeing him to make sure I was right. That I did good.
The man twisted to move past me and disappointment stroked my chest for all but a moment because just as he passed me, I felt the warmth of his breath tickle my ear as he whispered "Attagirl" in my ear.
Pleasure spiked in me and small noise left my mouth as I watched him walk causally back into the trauma room to assist. My heart was racing and I could feel my thighs tightening. Up close, his smell of mahogany, spice and a hint of sweat, overpowered the odor of the ED for just a moment. My body wanted to follow his intoxication, to escape it all. But there was a sedated patient with a gushing compound fracture and a couple of new medical students needing my help. So I stayed and finished my job.

Four more hours in and the start of my actual shift commenced. Most of the dayshift was clearing out, patients were being handed off and I was starting to feel the burn of overworking and stress get to me. Things had quieted down a lot thankfully and I leaned against the nursing station, half listening as one of the doctors, Trinity, complained about her charting.
It had been the longest five hours of my life assessing gunshot wounds, more trampled men, women and even an injured child came in. My empathy flooded the floors almost as much as the blood splatter did. I didn't focus on it too much, knowing me I would never be able to work here again if i did. No, my focus was pointed on the men across the room speaking inaudibly.
Dr Robby, my day shift attending and who I assumed was the acclaimed Dr Abbott, who I now knew as my saviour, spoke animatedly. Biting the inside of my cheek I watched intently how they spoke. I could see the smile forming on Dr Abbot's handsome face as he talked to his old friend. How his hand clenched when they spoke seriously. That vein on his neck was still there from earlier, throbbing like a ticking time bomb.
Drool started to pool in my mouth as I started to zone out a little but a firm slap on the table from Trinity had me clicking right back into place. I bent down, placing my forearms on the table facing her.
"Did you even hear a word I said?" she asked.
I breathed a sigh and shook my head. "I zoned out after I hate these stupid fucking charts" I said honestly earning a smiling glare from trinity. i smiled back, stretching my back slightly against the nursing deck.
The clearing of a throat to my right interrupted our glaring contest and I almost jumped out of my skin as the attention of both Dr Robby and Dr Abbott were on me, and me only, as I stretched slowly against the station.
Abbott's eyes were on my thighs as I slowly raised up to meet their eyes. He wasn't subtle in the way he dragged his eyes higher and higher until they met mine and I felt myself clench when he finally did. Did he just check me out?
"This, here is Dana's protégée I was telling you about Abbott. She's all yours now, I'm sad to say." Robby said as a way of introduction.
I smiled at Abbott while he continued to size me up, a slight hint of amusement on his face as my eyes dodged every meeting with his. My palms felt sweaty and I thanked god he didn't reach out to shake mine or he would know just how I was feeling with those eyes on me.
"Are you sure there isn't anything I cant do to persuade you to come back to the day shift?" Robby asked cutting the tension. I was finally able to break away from Dr Abbott's pull as I faced the other doctor.
"I'm afraid this shift is much more accommodating. We'll see how I adjust though." I said, leaving some assurance with Robby that I could come back. The cafe needed me during the day and I got more tips from the sheer traffic in the mornings. If the night shift didn't work here, I'd have to go back to closing there which was just miserable.
"I think she'll do just fine here, right?" Dr, Abbott said staring down at me, his eyes sparkling with challenge and boyish charm.
"Yes sir." I didn't hesitate to say.
His nod of approval had my stomach doing somersaults. Something about this mans approval did something to me. I had heard things about him, about how he was in the army, how he used his own personal time to time on patient outreach teams that really needed it. He was a legend here, a real leader. I could tell by the way the night crew worked as a unit. At least what I could tell in passing.
Unfortunately I hadn't seen much of Dr Abbott until now, but I was both nervous and elated to be working by his side. Dr Robby had been pushing me to move up the chain to getting my MD and becoming a doctor. He said he saw that drive in me. I decided to take some online courses over the past few years working my way through both jobs until I could afford medical school. It was just the MCAT that stood in my way now.
I was taking the year to study and make some money. Everyone on the day shift knew about my aspirations, and while Robby and Dana were sad to see me go, they assured me that I was in great hands with Dr Abbott and Dr Shen. The former had me thinking just how much I liked those hands.
As if he knew exactly what I was thinking about, Dr Abbott reached up, flexing his arm as he ran a hand over his chin, groaning in the deep masculine way that a man does.
"Ok my little doctor in training, we have a long night ahead of us yet." he said, shooing Robby off. The other man grunting a laugh behind us before waving bye and stalking off to the staff room.
"Welcome to the night crew, were happy to have you." his face was serious but his crinkled eyes thoughtful. I smiled, so many words getting caught in my throat. He seemed to notice my nervousness and just huffed a laugh. My body reacted in a way to having those eyes, his eyes, all over me. I wanted to squirm.
"When you're done today, come find me. We'll go over the zone system we have set up to cover both the rooms and the halls. Robby tells me you want to be a doctor, so for now I want you by my side. If he was right about you I'll give you some trauma patients tomorrow." He instructed in that roughy leader voice he had, which I'm sure was born in the army.
That slight smile curved his lips as I couldn't help but beam at his words.
"Really?! I- mean thank you Doctor Abbott, that sounds amazing." I said, thrilled at the idea of having a lead on a case. Robby let me look after a bunch of my own patients with his supervision since I was still a nurse but I had to work up to that for a while. Abbott coming out with this day one gave me some hope about the night shift.
"Abbott, you can call me Abbott." He corrected me. My palms began to sweat again. I wondered what his first name was although Abbott seemed to suit him just fine. I nodded my head, unable to form any words again and he sighed taking a small step towards me. I could feel the heat of his body creeping towards me in the coldness of the ED.
"Am I going to have my hands full with you?" He said under his breath, his voice light and amused.
I just about came in my pants right there. I was full out sweating now, he was too close, he smelt too good- Jesus he looked too good.
"If you're lucky"
My eye twitched as I tried to keep my eyeballs from bursting out of my head. It had just spurted out of my mouth like word vomit. He was so close to me and I just couldn't behave like that.
Fuck. Had I just flirted with him?
My eyes were on my feet then but I peaked my eyes to look up at him through my lashes. To my surprise, a look of bewildered amusement met my eyes. A small deep chuckle lit up my ears and I felt the blush burning my cheeks.
"You have a mouth on you huh, kid." He said smirking. I watched closely as the lines in his face moved and a flash of his white teeth met my gaze. He truly was so sexy. Age was spattered all over him but his curly salt white brown hair and light eyes gave him that air of youth. Not to mention the obvious fit shape he was in. My panties would be undoubtedly soaked by the time I got home if I had to work by his side today.
I looked up at him again and he was looking right back, his eyes filled with mischief. With another step closer he moved to say something but a loud voice screamed out just behind us. I jumped at the abnormal sound, turning to see a trauma wheeling in with the paramedics.
Eyes back on Abbott I realized he still watched me.
"To be continued. C'mon kid let's see what you got." He said with a playful wink.
Before I could move, his hand was already on my back guiding me in a jog towards the trauma room. I tried to focus more on the crash cart than the full body tingles I was having.
It was going to be a long shift and part of me was way too excited about it.
