Chapter 1: Life Abroad

Desmond walked along the cold, metallic corridor of the ship. It was so kept almost clinically clean. Maintained by the diligent hoverbots that patrolled the spacecraft. The nineteen year old looked at his data tablet and reread the dossier on the Kerlaxians that he would be housed with. He had been selected as an envoy for his college to study abroad on the planet Kerlan. It wasn't through the college, it had been some independent program.

The questionnaire had been simple enough, straightforward questions about himself; height, weight, hair color, eye color and a brief description of his time spent on earth. Desmond had tried to condense his entire life leading up to that moment in a little more than a paragraph. The program manager had read it and had him sign countless folders and forms until Desmond stopped reading and just signed where he was told.

That was three weeks ago. Once he was told he had been selected to study Kerlaxians, his heart sank a little. Their species was far from human looking. The males were around 3 feet tall, females were 7 feet, had 3 insectoid legs, a human-like torso, 4 insectoid arms, antennae and normal face except for their eyes. Their eyes had always been unsettling to Desmond, multifaceted insect-like casing but a kind of pupil housed within. They reminded Desmond of a praying mantis.

Meanwhile, Jay, his roommate, had been selected to study the Yinal. Which all resembled human women but with blue skin and tentacles for hair. Neither of them had ever seen a Yinal that wasn't drop dead gorgeous.

Fate just seemed to be annoyed by Desmond's presence. Never antagonistic but more than happy to inconvenience him at every turn. He gets good grades, people find him annoying. He tries to be friendly and more open, people downplay his achievements. The young man sighed as he opened the sliding door to his quarters. He sat in the chair that was his only furniture in the room and thought more about his past.

Running his fingers through his short brown hair, he inhaled deeply. He had learned to become self reliant out of necessity. He was awkward, sure, but had become strong willed to survive. No one had ever vouched for him so he did it himself. Desmond chortled to himself. The student wasn't bitter nor hateful like so many others in his position would be. He held a quiet acceptance that life would always do this to him.

Despite every irony in his life, Desmond had still been selected. He was going to be an envoy of the human race. A bridge between their species, this was truly his biggest accomplishment. He gave a cheeky grin as he looked in the mirror next to the chair. Maybe the Kerlaxians will treat him better than his kind did.

The next day Desmond went over common Kerlaxian phrases. How he would introduce himself to the couple that would be housing him. He reread the dossier for the umpteenth time.

"Vynkor Dala, male. Lumina Dala, female. Dwelling: Class 4 lodging in rural region of Kerlan. Known hazards: Frequent rainstorms that are not harmful but have an adverse effect on human behavior, occasional thick fog in certain regions can make travel difficult, etc..."

The dossier also included images of Vynkor and Lumina. It showed the two side by side sitting in chairs inside presumably their home. Desmond studied that image a lot. They looked happy. A silent melancholy fell over him as he remembered his own parents. He never once saw the happy moment these Kerlaxians had in a single photo.

"Approaching Kerlan, prepare for landing." A computerized voice announced over the intercom.

The young man snapped out of his flashback. He placed the few clothes he had back in his bag. The dossier automatically closed. The ship groaned slightly as it entered Kerlan's atmosphere.

Stepping out onto the landing pad with hundreds of other passengers, Desmond felt uneasy. Outwardly calm, his eyes scanned the faces of hundreds of people who waited for the passengers. Many Kerlaxians hugged each other in greeting. It was so loud in the spaceport, it was difficult to focus.

Desmond stood like a sentry, his legs stiff and eyes checking every face. His eyes scanned through the sea of other passengers and travellers.A male Kerlaxian approached him. He wore a pale green tunic and his chitinous legs were exposed. In Kerlaxian culture, showing one's torso was a great sign of trust that the human assumed also implied intimacy. Desmond knew him from the image.

"Desmond Fairchild?" The male asked.

"Yes, are you Vynkor Dala?" Desmond replied.

"Yes, so it is." Vynkor answered.

Desmond gave the customary greeting for Kerlaxians as mentioned in the dossier.

"Surla vonatarrus." He struggled to make the correct inflections.

Vynkor's antennae twitched up and his head tilted to the side. He smiled warmly.

"Very good for a human!" He exclaimed, "Come come, my partner is eg... eeeg..."

"Eager?" Desmond asked.

"Yes, that word." Vynkor answered, indicating for Desmond to follow.

The language barrier between species could be bypassed in some instances but not with Kerlaxians. Humans simply cannot make the appropriate utterances due to Kerlaxians having a second tongue on the roof of their mouth. This also led to difficulties for them to speak Terran.

Desmond followed Vynkor through the crowd. The young man never took his eyes off the diminutive form of his caretaker. Lumina was far away from the crowd, sitting on a bench. She was wearing a dark blue tunic. While covered, her breasts still caught his eye. He knew better than to stare. Desmond could read her facial expression easily. Kerlaxians always had expressive faces from what he read. She was very excited and a hint of nervousness. Lumina stood up and slowly walked over to the two. She scooped Vynkor up in two arms and hugged him. She looked at Desmond and bent her 3 knees to make herself seem smaller.

"Are you okay with hugs?" She asked courteously.

Her tone conveyed manners but her body language made Desmond feel like she was talking to a scared dog at a shelter. She hadn't rushed to meet him. The young man found it unusual but harmless. He was a different species after all.

"Yes, Surlan Vorkruela." Desmond answered and gave her the customary greeting.

Lumina lightly hugged him and stroked the back of his neck as she did so. Vynkor hugged him from his perch in Lumina's arms. Desmond didn't like physical contact, it made him feel out of place. However he had to be polite to his caretakers. Lumina released him from the hug and set Vynkor down.

"Are we ready for home?" Vynkor asked.

"Yes, let us go home." Lumina answered, smirking at Desmond.

They exited the spaceport and climbed into a hovertruck. Lumina opened the door for Desmond.

"Come on, climb in Keena." Lumina cooed to Desmond.

Desmond did as he was told, though he wasn't familiar with the term "Keena". Lumina closed the door behind him and got in the driver's seat.

"You will like it at our house. It's tucked away in the hills. We do not have any neighbors." Vynkor explained to Desmond.

He listened to Vynkor prattle on and on for about an hour before drifting off to sleep.

***

"Look, he is sleeping." Vynkor cooed, looking back at the young man.

"Ver kaal, that is adorable." Lumina whispered adoringly.

"He is so cute when he twitches like that. What do you think Keena is dreaming about?" Vynkor asked, lowering his voice.

"Hopefully good things, do you remember what the representative said? He had a rough upbringing." Lumina replied in their language.

"Poor thing, well I'm sure he will enjoy his new home." The male said, settling in as the hovertuck kept cruising.

***

"Wake up little one." Lumina crooned, nudging Desmond.

The human groaned as he woke up. His eyes slowly opened to see her face. She had a cautious look of care. Her eyes were like large jewels, studying his face. It caught the young man off guard but he didn't jump.

"We are home." Vynkor murmured.

Desmond sat up and grabbed his bags. He crawled out of the powered down hovertruck. The twin suns of Kerlan were setting. Lumina approached the door to their house. The house was low to the ground and resembled the rolling hills that surrounded the dwelling. Desmond hadn't read anything about Kerlaxian homes but suspected the house was entirely subterranean.

"This looks nice." He said cheerily.

"Oh thank you!" Lumina chimed.

"It belonged to my parents." Vynkor sighed happily.

Desmond heaved his pack over his shoulder and followed Lumina in. Vynkor followed behind him. Once they entered, Desmond's eyes drank in every detail of the rooms.

The living room was small but spacious, hand carved wood furniture was kept close to the walls. Opposite a large, plushy blueish-purple couch was a decent sized datascreen. The lights clicked on, allowing pleasant green light to flood the room. Several exotic plants nearly blocked out the windows. Desmond marvelled at the botanical collection.

"Shall I start making dinner?" Vynkor asked Lumina.

"Yes please. Thank you dear." Lumina answered.

As Vynkor turned his back to his partner, she spanked what Desmond assumed was his ass. The small alien jumped slightly, letting out a faint yelp of surprise. Vynkor turned back with a pleased look and purred before going into the kitchen. Desmond blushed, he wasn't expecting to see such displays in front of him. He looked away, fidgeting with his bag. Lumina turned her head in his direction.

"While he is busy, I will show you where our bed is." She said in a sultry tone.

She stepped towards Desmond, her height made him feel small. But he swallowed his unease and gathered himself.

"I'll follow you." He replied feigning innocence.

Lumina nodded.

"So it is." She said in that same tone.

Desmond followed her down a flight of stairs. His caretaker showed him their food stores, bathroom and storage room. Finally ending with the bedroom, which already looked very lived in. The bed was large, bigger than a king-size bed. Several black and blue blankets covered the mattress. A small handful of plushies were nestled in the corner. They were stuffed creatures that Desmond didn't recognize.

"You will sleep in here, with us." Lumina explained placidly.

"Um, with you? Both of you?" Desmond questioned, now very uncomfortable.

"Well yes, we want you to be comfortable with us." Lumina explained, her face forming a concerned look.

"Uh... humans don't typically... share beds. I'm not trying to be rude, but I'd feel more comfortable in my own bed." Desmond reasoned, his tone cautious.

"All of our other rooms are being used. We were anticipating you sharing the bed with us. But rest wherever you feel comfortable." Lumina replied with a smile.

"Thank you." Desmond replied, still uneasy.

Lumina stepped towards him and hugged him reassuringly. Desmond hesitantly hugged her back.

"I have something for you." She whispered.

She released him and pulled a handmade collar out from the nightstand next to the bed. She stepped toward him and went to put it on his neck. His body language shifted and he took a step back.

"It's okay, it's just a collar." Lumina said soothingly.

"Are you aware of what collars mean to humans?" He asked.

"No, but in our culture, it's a way of saying you are under our protection." Lumina explained.

Desmond's lips tightened subconsciously. He didn't like the idea of being collared. Something about it made him feel like if he accepted, he was betraying himself. The room was silent as a graveyard for several moments. His mind was ablaze with anxious, contradicting thoughts,

I already made a big deal about the bed. A collar implies ownership. What if I offend her?

"Okay, I'll wear it." The human relented, his voice was soft and small.

Her eyes lit up and her face beamed happily. Her multifaceted eyes drilled into his. While Kerlaxian faces betrayed everything, their eyes gave off no emotion.

"Thank you Keena." Lumina replied with a warm smile.

She stepped forward and locked the collar around his neck. It was snug but not tight. Desmond couldn't deny its softness and the care that went into its crafting. After she had it in place, Lumina stepped back to admire him.

"You look so handsome with it." She excitedly said, clasping her four hands together.

Desmond blushed deeply and lowered his eyes. He felt strange. There was a knock on the open door. Vynkor stood in the doorway.

"I made earth food." He chimed, looking at Desmond, "Oh, you got the collar! How does it feel?"

"It's really soft, is it handmade?" Desmond asked, still blushing.

"It is, I made it myself." Vynkor announced, clearly proud of his handiwork, "It is made of Godela leather."

The three made their way upstairs to the kitchen. Desmond couldn't help but notice anytime the three went somewhere, one of his caretakers was always behind him. He was guided to the kitchen where a small table was already laid out with a plate of hamburgers in the center. Desmond quietly chuckled, he had never seen burgers served in such a way but it made sense that the aliens might know of the food but not know how to serve it.

***

Vynkor took the last of their empty dishes to the kitchen before returning to the table.

"So, do I go somewhere to learn about your culture or do I just live here and take notes on you two?" Desmond asked.

Lumina and Vynkor looked at each other with a confused expression.

"What do you mean?" Vynkor asked.

"Well, the program was kind of vague with how I learn about your culture so I wasn't sure what was expected of me." Desmond clarified.

"Keena, what did they tell you?" Lumina inquired with a concerned tone.

Desmond felt his blood run cold. His eyes darted between both Vynkor and Lumina, trying to extrapolate why they were suddenly so concerned.

"They... uh... said I was coming here to learn about Kerlaxian culture." Desmond spoke slowly as trepidation took root, "And if I choose to drop out of the program, I have to pay back all of my...travel costs."

The two looked at each other uneasily.

"We... signed up for the adopt a human program... and we picked you... but we thought you already knew..." Vynkor chose his words carefully.

"Wh... what? There must be some mistake..." The human's words sounded disconnected and spacey.

Vynkor slowly stood up. Desmond's world crashed around him. He didn't speak and all sound stopped. Questions swirled in his head.

How could this happen to him? The program was through his college right? Did the representative lie? How was he going to get home?

Desmond fainted.

Chapter 2: Life and Lemons

When the young man woke up, it was dark outside. He heard the gentle sound of rain outside. Desmond stayed still for a moment, taking in his surroundings. As his eyes adjusted, he saw Lumina and Vynkor asleep, leaned against the couch he was laying in. He had a thick blanket over him, leaving his head and neck exposed.

Desmond started shaking.

How could he leave? Did whatever organization have actual backing?

The young man shuddered when he thought back on all the forms he had signed but didn't read. So the company could legally come after him if he tried to flee. Desmond didn't study law, he didn't know.

What was the adopt a human program? Why did Lumina and Vynkor choose him? It wasn't like an orphanage, Desmond was already nineteen so that didn't make sense. Was he their slave? They seemed so nice, not the type to willingly involve themselves in slavery.

The questions circled him like sharks. The couch was his sinking lifeboat. Desmond tried to figure things out until the sun shined through the window and leaves of the exotic houseplants. Vynkor woke first with a yawn. He saw Desmond wake and his antennae perked up.

"Keena, are you okay?" He whispered.

"Not really, but I'm alive." He whispered back.

"Would you like some breakfast?" Vynkor quietly asked.

"I'm not hungry." The human answered apathetically.

"So it is, I will still make you some if you feel like eating later." Vynkor replied kindly.

With that, the short alien got up carefully so as to not rouse his partner and tiptoed into the kitchen. As the delicious smells wafted into the living room, Lumina woke up.

"Keena, are you okay?" She asked groggily.

"No, I want to know..." Desmond paused, "Why am I here?"

Lumina blinked at him, very surprised.

"Can we discuss it over breakfast?" She asked cautiously.

Desmond softened at her tone. He felt the inexplicable desire to see her happy. Like how she was when they first met. She was nervous, or hurt. Desmond couldn't quite tell.

"Sure." He answered quietly.

All three of them sat at the table with palpable tension. Vynkor shifted uneasily. His fork poked some kind of local meat the human didn't recognize.

"So... why did you adopt me?" Desmond finally asked, breaking the silence.

"Well, we wanted a companion and we heard good things about humans so we went through all the hoops and made sure everything was legal on our end... Then the representative showed us some profiles and we thought you would like living with us.." Lumina explained.

"So on your planet, I legally belong to you?" He inquired, his voice barely above a whisper.

The lump in his throat seemed to grow with that question. The table went quiet for a while. Desmond's mind was ablaze with everything that simple answer entailed. Vynkor looked to Lumina for support. Lumina looked at the young man and nodded "yes".

"Is there any way to back out of it? Like a trial run on something?" Desmond's voice raised in fear.

"Do not raise your voice." Lumina commanded in a sympathetic but firm voice.

Desmond went silent and locked eyes with Lumina. Her face was cold and calculated. She had ordered him and her expression was like that of a predator about to pounce. He felt the walls around him closing in. He just wanted to go home.

"I... apologize... this is just a lot to take in." The young man lowered his voice.

"We understand that, and to answer your question... no. There is no way to reverse this." Lumina compassionately stated, "When two Kerlaxians pick a companion, they are selected for life."

"F-For life?" Desmond uttered, despair setting in.

"But you become a member of our family. It is not slavery, it is the chance at a better life." Vynkor piped up, trying to sound optimistic.

"For life..." Desmond could only repeat the phrase.

His entire life, ripped from him. Signed, packaged and sold right in front of him. Fate had gone a lot further than dealt him a cruel inconvenience. This was his life now. He belonged to this alien couple on a planet far from home, isolated from everyone he had ever known. He felt numb.

"So what're my duties? As your companion I mean." He asked, though his voice lacked all emotion.

"You live with us and you love with us. That's it. You are adopted by us, not owned... p-per... per?." Lumina explained, struggling to enunciate the adverb

"Per se?" Desmond asked.

Lumina nodded yes.

Desmond only nodded "yes" in response. His mind was a gestalt of thoughts and ideas that even he could barely keep track of. He stared at his breakfast in complete silence.

"M-maybe I can look to see if there is anything we can do?" Vynkor asked timidly, trying to break the tension.

Desmond didn't respond, his eyes remained locked on his breakfast. Lumina looked at her partner and nodded yes.

"Thank you dear, please do. I will stay with Desmond for a while." The tall Kerlaxian replied softly.

"So it is." Vynkor said softly before leaving the table.
