The Paris Secret: Mother and Son
They checked in as Mr and Mrs Smith. Le Bristol, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Less absurd the second time. More like a name that had grown into them, a life that existed only in hotel rooms far from England.
Diana watched Jamie in the taxi from Charles de Gaulle. Eight weeks since Edinburgh. Eight weeks of cooking for one at a time, sitting through Mark's faculty dinners, billing hours at chambers, the whole of it feeling like moving underwater. She'd watched her son get out of the car at Christmas and thought about Paris. She'd sat opposite him at her own dining table on Boxing Day and passed him roast potatoes and thought about Paris. She'd let her husband touch her in the dark and turned her face away and thought about Paris.
Jamie's hand found her knee in the taxi. The same hand that had been a child's hand, that she'd held crossing roads, that had held a pen she'd taught him to use.
'You look tired,' he said.
'I am. Mark's been attentive.' The word carrying everything it needed to.
'Just us now.'
He didn't say it like a reassurance. He said it like a fact.
---
He locked the door and stood with his forehead against it. She watched him do this. Recognised the gesture -- something he'd done since adolescence, collecting himself. She knew him too well for this to be safe. That was the problem. That had always been the problem.
She sat on the bed and reached back for the zip.
'Let me.' He crossed the room and stood behind her. Took the zip down slowly. His fingers ran up the channel of her spine and she felt every vertebra of it. 'I missed you so much I couldn't concentrate. I sat through two client meetings thinking about this.'
'Don't tell me that.'
'Why not?'
'Because I did the same.' She turned to face him. 'Your father asked if I was all right. Three separate times.'
Something moved in Jamie's expression. Not guilt -- he was past guilt, they both were. Something more complex. Possession. Satisfaction. It should have appalled her. She let him see that it didn't.
He helped her out of the dress. Black lace underneath, the expensive set from the shop off King's Parade, receipt buried in her chambers filing cabinet between two 2019 case files.
'No mirror here,' she said.
'We don't need one.' His hands settled on her waist. 'I want your face this time.'
He lifted her. Her back against the wall. His hands cupped beneath her and she felt the solid certainty of him holding her there -- and felt the wrongness of knowing how strong he was, her boy, how entirely he'd become someone she had no business wanting.
'This is for me,' he said. 'For eight weeks of thinking about you.'
His fingers found the top of the stockings. Then between her legs. She was already soaked -- eight weeks of it all concentrated into his hand, her body having apparently given up any pretence of self-control the moment she'd walked into the terminal at Heathrow and seen him waiting.
He pulled the lace aside and pushed two fingers inside her. She heard herself. That slick, candid sound of him working her against the wall while his father sat in a Cambridge study marking essays about the Romantics.
'Open your eyes. Look at me. Tell me what you've been doing for two months.'
'Washing dishes. Writing briefs. Sitting through your father's dinner parties.' She held his gaze. 'Thinking about you every single time he touched me.'
He bit her shoulder. Then freed himself and pushed inside her, no ceremony, no gradation, just need and eight weeks of absence. She felt the familiar shock of him -- too much at first, always too much at first, her body's resistance and then the giving way.
'Jesus.' His forehead dropped to her shoulder. 'Every time.'
He moved hard and fast and she heard them, the sounds of it, extraordinary and obscene in that expensive room. She felt herself coming almost immediately, her whole body tightening, unable to stop it.
'Come on,' he said against her neck. 'Come for me. On your son's cock.'
The words hit her like a second body. She came with her face pressed into his shoulder, biting down on the fabric of his shirt so she didn't go through the walls.
He didn't stop. Built her up again from the ruins of it. When he finally came he drove deep and stayed there and she felt everything -- the pulse, the flood of him, the sheer quantity held back for weeks now inside her.
Afterwards he carried her to the bed. Laid her down. Kissed her slowly, the way he'd learned she needed after.
'I love you,' he said. 'I know what that costs to say out loud. But I do.'
She pulled him down. 'I love you too. That's the whole problem.'
---
The tie came out of his bag, one of his work ones. She'd noticed him wear it and a family wedding. He looked so smart and grown up.
'Wrists?' he asked.
'Wrists. Then ankles.'
She watched him tie her. His hands slightly unsteady -- careful still, treating it as something requiring permission rather than assumption. That was why she trusted him with it.
The silk scarf came next. 'Can I?'
'Yes.'
The room went dark and immediate. She could smell his aftershave and underneath it the layered smell of themselves, sex and skin and hotel linen, and underneath that something she hadn't let herself name before -- him, specifically, the smell she'd known since the delivery room at Addenbrooke's thirty-one years ago.
'I'm just looking at you,' he said. 'My mother. Tied up for me.'
'Talk to me.'
'I think about leaving Sophie every day. Then I add up what it costs. Then I think about you going home to Dad and him putting his hands on you and I can't bear it. I actually cannot bear it.'
'Nor can I.'
The bed took his weight beside her. His hand flat on her stomach. 'What are we doing, mum?'
'I don't know.'
'Two days every two months isn't enough.'
'I know.'
His hand moved lower. Found her still ready, still slick with him inside her, and pushed it back. Started working her properly, two fingers, returning to the same spot he'd found in Edinburgh without any searching at all, which was its own kind of devastation.
'Tell me you'll leave him.'
'Jamie--'
'Tell me.' His fingers moved faster. She could hear herself in the dark. 'Tell me you'll actually do it. Not just here.'
'I'll leave him.' The words and the orgasm arrived together. She had no idea which caused which.
---
Much later she asked: 'Anything?'
'Anything.'
She made him lie flat and tied his wrists to the headboard. Pulled the knot until he tested it and it held. Then she peeled off the stockings slowly and held the first one up in the lamplight.
'Do you know what's on these?'
His throat moved. 'Us.'
'Two days of us.' She worked it inside herself. Let it sit. Drew it out and crossed to the bed.
'Open.'
He opened his mouth and she laid it on his tongue and watched his face. The sounds he made -- low, muffled, absolutely beyond himself -- were unlike anything she'd heard from another person. The tie went bar-tight against the headboard.
She wrapped the second stocking around him. Tight, the way he'd shown her he needed. The veins standing up along the shaft, a bead of him running down where the silk held.
'You don't come until I say.'
She straddled him but kept him out. Began working her way down his body with her mouth. Bit each nipple until he made raw, involuntary sounds -- the sounds of someone who'd run out of composure. Got to his ear.
'You're tasting yourself,' she said quietly. 'Out of your mother.'
She pulled the stocking from his mouth.
'It's wrong,' he said. Voice completely gone. 'Completely wrong. I don't care. I want everything from you. I want things I haven't even said out loud yet.'
She turned. Put herself over his face. Felt his mouth find her immediately. While she ground herself against him she took his toes into her mouth one by one and felt the sounds he was making transmit through her entire body.
He came up for air. 'Your feet, mum. Need them. Please.'
She gave them to him. Here they were. A mother and her son. In a Paris hotel. Beyond the reach of any argument she'd ever successfully made to herself.
Her toenails were painted dark red. The colour Mark had told her looked common. The colour she'd worn ever since.
She turned to face him. Guided him inside slowly, inch by inch, squeezing until his whole body went rigid beneath her.
'Who am I?'
'My mum.' Barely a voice at all. 'My mum and I love you and I've needed you for months and I don't know how to stop.'
'And this is mine.'
'It's yours. All of it. I'm yours.'
She moved slowly. Deep, deliberate strokes. Watching his face come apart beneath her -- the face she'd watched her whole adult life, at school plays, across dinner tables, in the rearview mirror of cars. The face she'd made.
When he couldn't take it any longer he freed his hands somehow and rolled her, drove hard and fast with her feet against his chest, his mouth on her toes, the headboard marking the wall.
She propped herself up on one elbow to watch where they joined. His cock disappearing into his mother in a five-star Paris hotel.
'I love you,' he said, looking straight at her. 'Whatever we blow up. Whatever it costs. I love you.'
'I love you too.'
They came together, which they'd never managed before. She lay in the wreckage of it and felt something she hadn't felt in years. Not guilt. Not shame. Something that sat, very quietly, underneath both of those.
Relief.
---
The flight home was Stansted at three. She sat in the bath while he slept and looked at her phone. Mark had texted twice. *Home by eight? I'll cook.* Then: *Everything okay?*
She put the phone face-down on the tiles.
Through the bathroom door she could hear Jamie's breathing. She knew the sound of it -- she'd stood over his cot for years checking for it. She sat in the cooling water and smelled his aftershave on her skin and thought about the word *leave*, and what it weighed, and whether she was actually capable of it.
Her phone lit up again. Mark.
She turned it face-down again and looked at the ceiling.
Outside, Paris was going about its morning.
