"Hey Gus. I see they got you working New Year's Eve again," Charlie said as she stopped her bike next to the guardhouse.
"Please. It gives me something to do. Plus I get paid overtime," Gus said as he pressed the button to open the gate. "Happy New Year's."
"Happy New Year's," Charlie said as she rode past him. Even if she wasn't expected, she could've bluffed her way past most of the guards. She's done it before. But when you come to Summer's Cove as often as she did, it was like she practically lived here.
Peddling up the hill the gated community was built upon, she could feel a slight sweat building. Despite it being December it had been in the mid 80's for most of the week.
A few houses after reaching the top, she stopped at a large white house that looked like it could be the home of a movie star with its gate out front and large greenery meant to make it feel like it was the only house around.
This gate she didn't even need to buzz into as she took a small fob out of her pocket. Walking her bike inside the gate, she leaned it against the wall where she always did. As she walked up the path, she noticed a few cars already in the driveway.
The Garcias hosted a New Year's Eve party each year, while she came over to play video games with Daniel in the basement. Daniel was her best friend since they were little. Her mom worked as a housekeeper when Charlie was first born. And as a single mom who only had a bad relationship with her parents, babysitters were expensive and hard to come by. So when she could, Charlie came along with her.
Daniel was only a few weeks older than her, so she was put to play with him and his older sister while her mom cleaned. Even after they started school and her mom had stopped cleaning houses, her mom still brought her over to play. According to legend, both of them threw a fit when they didn't have their usual play date.
Ever since then, the two of them hung out whenever they could even though they couldn't be more different. Daniel was tall, like really tall, like six foot six inches tall, athletic, handsome with his dark complexion, messy dark hair, and smiling brown eyes. Oh, and the big one, rich, going to a fancy private school that cost as much as her mom made in a year.
Charlie, in her eighteen years, never broke five foot. And her mom worked herself to the bone just to afford a tiny two bedroom apartment for them. If it was just those two things, she wouldn't have minded. She wasn't short, she was fun-sized. And for all her faults, her mom had never once let them go homeless or hungry.
But what broke the camel's back was that she lacked a woman's figure. Her face, plain. Her chest, small. Her ass, flat. Her curves, straight. Combined with her height, it made it hard for others to take her seriously. And forget even thinking about getting a real boyfriend. The only silver lining was it made her friendship with Daniel easier.
"Hey Charlie," Daniel said as she walked in the door. He looked like he was walking down the stairs at the same time she was coming in, but she knew better.
"What's the bad news? Wait, don't tell me. You and Andrea got back together again. How many times do I have to tell you she's a crazy bitch?" Charlie said.
"No. I've learned my lesson this time," he said holding up his hands.
"Sure. And you weren't just thinking of her big, soft fun bags when I said her name?" His answer was an awkward chuckle and a forced smile. "So what's the bad news?"
"Well my parents sort of forgot to tell me that they decided to go on a cruise for their thirtieth anniversary instead of having the party," he said meekly.
"And how many days did you forget to tell me that?" she asked.
"They left two days ago. And my sister invited her friends over and their boyfriends for a party."
"It's not like I would've not come, you idiot," she said punching him.
"I know, but-"
"I would've just liked to know that I was actually lying to my mom." Not that her mom would mind if she told her his parents wouldn't be here. She was pretty sure her mom thought she was a lesbian at this point. "Besides, have I ever left you alone at a party? Well, other than that time with Tad. But that was-"
"Charlotte you're here." Speak of the devil, his sister came around the hallway and gave her a bear hug that smashed her face into Ginia's boobs. "It's been so long. You have to tell me all about senior year. Do you have a boyfriend? Knowing you, probably not. You should get one. I know, you should come visit me for the weekend. I will introduce you to plenty of college boys."
"Ginia, you are about to suffocate her," Daniel said flatly.
"Sorry Charlotte," she said finally letting go.
"It's fine." Ginia, was in a word, a lot. Both in personality and body. She took after their mom with her hourglass figure, large chest, and gorgeous face. She had even been scouted to do some modeling when in high school. "And to answer your question, I did ask someone out, but got rejected."
"That's no good. A cute little thing like you shouldn't have to ask guys out. They should be asking you." Charlie shrugged. Ginia was a lot. But she was also the only one to always treat her like a girl, no questions asked. "Well, you're the last to arrive."
They walked into the newly remodeled open concept kitchen where the rest were talking around the island.
"Hey Charlie," they said almost in unison.
The two other girls were Ginia's best friends from high school. And she guessed, her friends as well considering how often they had hung out over the years. Neve Kennedy was the classic Irish beauty, tall, with a swimmer's body, bright green eyes, long red hair, and covered in freckles. Mandy Patel was a few inches taller than Charlie, with short black hair, gorgeous hazel green eyes, and voluptuous in every sense of the word.
Wes Gardner was the classic blue-eyed, blonde pretty boy, a little bit taller than Neve, with a face made for the movies. He and Ginia had been an item since eighth grade, and he even decided to go to the same school as her. Caleb Reed filled the jock stereotype, tall, muscular, and just a little bit dumb, which, as Mandy liked to tell everyone, was how she liked them.
The final guy was Edwin Oliver, who despite having the most British name ever, had a dad from Newark and a mom who was an heiress to some Taiwanese company. He gave off a real BTS vibe with his styled hair and designer clothes when everyone else was wearing t-shirts and shorts. Out of the three, he was the one she knew the least. Mostly through parties and the couple times he came over to Daniel's house to play video games since they were both on the basketball team.
Before she could even sit down, Neve grabbed her and plopped her in the seat next to her. "How are you doing?"
"Good, I guess." She looked over to Edwin sitting next to her. "So how long have you two been going out?"
"It's a funny story. I was at my first college party and drank way too much. The next thing I remember is being in his bathroom, hunched over a toilet, as he was rubbing my back."
"It was all really romantic," he said rolling his eyes.
"We didn't even realize we were at the same school," Neve added putting her hand on Edwin's thigh.
"And this is why you shouldn't drink," Ginia said sliding over Charlie's usual can of "fancy" Pamplemousse La Croix. Ginia, despite her wild tendencies, was a complete and utter teetotaler like her parents. Daniel, on the other hand, usually didn't hesitate to have a beer or two if they were there. Charlie avoided alcohol because a can of beer was enough to get her drunk.
"It's still weird to see you wearing t-shirts and shorts," Wes said from across the island. Daniel gave him a punch on the arm. "What? Whenever I remember her she is dressed all girly in a skirt or dress with that real long hair."
"I cut my hair when I was a freshman," Charlie said remember how long her brown hair had been compared to how it was now--going just past her shoulders. As for why she wasn't wearing those things anymore, high school is a cruel thing.
"I think she looks good," Mandy said. "She's like one of those tomboys who are all rawr, rawr, rough, one of the guys. And then bam, she's like super hot. I love those."
"Charlie is about as much of a tomboy as Ginia," Neve said with a chuckle. "Though I think you could pull it off. Get some skinny jeans. And I saw these tight pink shorts the other day, they would look great on you."
"Yeah, no," Charlie said.
"Could we stop picking on Charlie," Daniel said.
"Speaking of picking on Charlie," Ginia said with a big smile. "Since we are all here, we should go swimming before dinner."
Charlie looked at Daniel who just waved his hands, gesturing that he didn't know. "I don't have a swimsuit."
"I know, which is why I got you one," Ginia said smiling. Charlie loved her like a sister, but she always did stuff like this. "Don't worry. This won't be like Maui."
"Ginia, you promised you wouldn't do shit like this," Daniel said.
"This wasn't the shit I was talking about."
"You know how I feel about swimming."
"Come on. I bet you would be really cute," Mandy added which got agreements from all except Edwin, which just proved he was the new boyfriend in the group.
"I will watch you guys swim," Charlie said.
"Ok," Ginia said pouting like she always did when she got shot down. It was comical how much she puffed out her cheeks when she got like this. Charlie always wanted to poke them.
"Sorry about this," Daniel said when the others left to get changed. "When she told me about this party, she promised she would be good."
"Don't worry about it. We both know this is her idea of being good." Charlie finished off her drink. "Besides, you are a total pushover when it comes to her."
"So do you want to go downstairs and play some Mario Kart?" he asked not even denying the pushover part.
She could tell by the looks in his eyes that he really didn't want to go play Mario Kart. He wanted to go ogle Neve and Mandy and hang out with the guys. "Nah, your sister will do something crazy if we try that."
"Yeah."
She sighed as he practically ran out of the kitchen to change into his trunks. Grabbing a fresh drink, she went outside and sat at the table with the umbrella, making sure her Slavic white skin was well protected from the sun. It didn't take long for the guys to walk out, which instantly perked her up.
Caleb looked poured into his trunks as everything from his neck down seemed to be muscles and chest hair. Wes didn't have muscles, but he had a slim body that made him look a bit like a young Leonardo DiCaprio. She had always been jealous of Ginia, getting to see it whenever she wanted. Edwin, you could tell he played basketball, with a bit of muscles on his arms and legs.
Her eyes instantly went to Daniel when he finally came out. They never swam when she was over so it had been years since the last time she saw him topless. She knew he worked out for basketball, but there was working out and there was what was in front of her. She guessed she had always assumed he was still the same stick he used to be. But he had a six-pack. A six-pack that had a treasure trail running from his bellybutton down into his trunks. Her eyes went to his arms and legs, they weren't thick, but she should've noticed that they weren't the same twigs.
"Charlie, are you okay?" he asked.
"Oh, yeah, sorry, what?"
"I grabbed you the SPF 10,000 you like," he said tossing her a bottle. "Are you still upset about Ginia?"
"I've built up an immunity to it," she said popping open the bottle. "Plus nothing can be worse than Maui."
"My parents were so pissed," he said holding back a laugh.
"Hey, if that's all I have to go through to get free trips to Maui," she said with a shrug.
"Daniel, get in here. We are going to chicken fight," Wes called to him.
He didn't hesitate to cannonball into the pool, spraying her with water.
"That's where it was," Neve said sitting down in the seat next to her and putting a big dollop of lotion onto her hand and rubbing it on her pale, freckled skin. Charlie looked over to find Ginia and Mandy putting on lotion on the pool chairs. "Those two will never know the horror of pale skin in sunlight."
"I've actually seen Ginia get burnt. She whined the entire time. And it wasn't even that bad. Like barely even a burn," Charlie said.
"Hah. I can totally see her doing that." Neve began rubbing the bright white sunscreen into her skin.
As Charlie did the same, she watched Wes and Edwin fight on top of Daniel and Caleb, respectively. Daniel was so tall that only Wes' feet were in the water, but it didn't seem to affect him much as he moved around in the pool. Thinking back, she had never gone to one of his basketball games. She kind of wish she had.
"You're really staring at them," Neve said.
"I got nothing better to do."
"Okay." Neve began watching the action as well. Charlie had no idea who was winning as they kept throwing each other into the pool. "You don't have to answer this, but you like Daniel."
"Of course I like him. He's my best friend," Charlie said even though she knew that wasn't what she meant.
She leaned forward on to the table, resting her chin against her hands like she was in some spy thriller. "Do you like him as a woman likes a man?"
Charlie thought about what to say. "Of course I do. But he's rich and hot and goes out with women that look like you three. I'm Charlie Boy. The Walking 2x4. The Trans Wonder."
"Do you really get called all that?" Neve asked.
When she realized she had told her about that stuff, she cursed herself. She had been so good about hiding it from everyone else.
"I got a lot of nicknames. But it doesn't really matter. It's not like I have any friends at that school. And in a few months I'll be out of there, forever." Saying it out loud, it wasn't worth the energy to worry about it anymore. Sure, she used to have some friends there. But once the harassment got bad enough, they abandoned her. They were never her friends in the first place.
"This is why you stopped dressing up. I always thought it was weird since you used to be so girly." Neve looked deep in thought.
Seeing her like that caused Charlie to realize something else. "Could you not tell them?" Neve didn't look convinced. "Like I said, it's only a couple of months. It's too late to change anything."
"I wouldn't even know how," Neve finally admitted. They watched another round of chicken, with Wes trying and failing to carry Daniel. "You should go put on that swimsuit Ginia got for you."
"Huh?"
"Trust me. It's on Ginia's bed," Neve said standing up and walking over to Ginia and Mandy.
Charlie's mind was racing as she pounded down her fizzy water. She had known Neve for years. More as Ginia's friend. But closer than any friend other than Daniel or Ginia. Ginia, Neve, and Mandy liked to call themselves the wilds. It was a stupid name. But there was some truth. Ginia was pretty straight laced, but would get these ideas and try to follow through on them no matter how stupid it was. Mandy was the rebel, revolting against any rule she didn't like. Most of those rules came from her parents. And Neve was the one who liked to see how far she could take things.
But that didn't really help her figure out whether or not to trust Neve. Thinking back to the times they hung out together, she was the most stable of the three. Calling a bad idea a bad idea. On the other hand, Mandy usually egged Ginia on. And she couldn't see her doing this as some mean prank. Especially after she let the cat out of the bag. That wasn't Neve.
The guys were still going at it, only this time splashing and pushing each other. That did look like fun. With the swimsuit, she could jump in with them. Maybe even--she pushed that thought of her mind. She couldn't do that. Plus the three girls were lying on their backs talking and looking at their phone.
She took a sip, trying to wet her dry mouth, but her can was empty. And she realized she had to use the bathroom. It was a relief, in a way, to have an excuse to go back into the house.
When she came out of the bathroom, she looked through the glass door to the pool.
"They wouldn't make fun of me. Not much anyways," she said to herself. Turning stiffly, she grabbed her bag from where she left it and marched up the stairs to Ginia's room.
The bikini was on the bed like Neve said it would be. She put the bikini top and bottom on in auto-pilot, trying not to think about it too much. After fumbling with the tie in the front a few time, it was complete. And she hated what she saw.
Not because it didn't look good or didn't fit, but because it did. Only Ginia would spend so much time on something stupid like this. It was a rusty-red color that looked great on her pale skin. Something that wasn't too revealing, but actually made her look like she had breasts. She had to check a few times that there wasn't any padding. Even the tie in the front looked cute. And the bottoms, it was like they were poured on, though they were a bit more revealing than she was comfortable with. She didn't even want to know how much she spent on it.
What she hated most of all was she could see just a bit of woman in the mirror, hiding in her small breasts and ass. And she knew it was a lie, brought out by this thing. But that same lie, made her feel so happy that she had to stop herself from running down the stairs. So many conflicting emotions. Steeling herself, she went out the door.
"Oh my god. You put it on," Ginia said bouncing off the chair and smothering her in her boobs for the second time today. "You look so good."
It took her a second to break free. "It's hot outside and I wanted to take a dip."
"What do you think?"
Charlie had to look away. Ginia's exuberance was blinding. "It looks really good."
"I knew you would like it," Ginia said bouncing up and down.
"Don't forget to put on sunscreen," Neve shouted from her chair holding up the bottle.
That's right, more sunscreen, to protect her skin that had rarely seen the sun before today. When she turned towards the pool, she could see all the guys staring at her. She wanted to run. To hide.
"You look great," Daniel said giving her a big goofy smile and a thumbs up. She knew it was a lie. He was her best friend. He had to say that. But it made her feel better.
"You look like a wet dog," she shot back which got a laugh from the other guys and caused another shoving match.
Sitting down on the free chair, she ran the cold lotion against her thighs and stomach. Every once in a while, she could see Daniel look at her out of the corner of her eye. She couldn't really blame him. Her in a bikini, it was like a train crash. You can't look away.
"Could one of you get me back?" Charlie asked.
"Actually, I have a better idea," Neve said with a smile that sent a chill down Charlie's spine. It said "You are going to love this." And Charlie seriously doubted that. "Hey guys, dry off for a second and help us put some sunscreen on our backs."
Charlie shot Neve a look, to which she mouthed what looked like "trust me" and made a small motion with her head. Following her line of sight, there was Daniel standing in the pool as the other three got out. He was staring back at her, and she could see the blush even through his olive complexion. It wasn't hard to see why. It was simple math.
"Daniel, could you put some on my back?" she asked way more smoothly than she thought she would. Actually, she was surprised she could ask at all.
"Sure," he said.
Out of the corner of her eyes, she could see Neve lying on her stomach. It looked like the string in the back was undone. Of course it was undone, she told herself. She reached behind her back to confirm that the her top couldn't be undone in the back. Feeling some relief, she laid down on the chair, watching Daniel give himself a quick pat down.
