Next Door (Tom & Diane #1)

0 views18 min read19 days ago

Diane had been at the new house six weeks when she first noticed Tom Whitfield.

Not noticed, exactly. She'd met him and his wife Ashley properly at the mailbox during their second week. They were a young couple, mid-thirties, with a baby boy who'd just turned one. They were the kind of exhausted-happy that parents of a one-year-old wear like a uniform. Ashley worked from home doing something in marketing. Tom was in construction management, gone before the sun was up and home before five most days.

Diane was forty-six and had been the primary income for her household for the better part of a decade. She ran operations for a regional logistics company, a job that paid well and asked a lot, and she'd long since made peace with the trade. Her husband Russell had taken on most of the parenting and homemaking duties when their youngest, Caleb, was born eight years ago. It was a decision that had made sense on paper and had mostly worked out, except for the part where Russell had stopped doing much of anything for himself in the years since. He'd put on sixty pounds. He'd stopped getting haircuts on schedule. He was a good father and an indifferent husband.

She, meanwhile, had aged into herself rather than away from herself. Forty-six, with curves that had filled in generously over the years, thick thighs and a full soft figure she'd stopped fighting and started actually wearing. A small faded tramp stamp sat just above her tailbone, a tribal design she'd gotten at twenty-two during a particularly reckless spring break that she'd long since stopped being embarrassed about and started treating as a quiet piece of personal history.

Her home office faced the side yard, a narrow gap between her house and the Whitfields' with a single window on each side close enough that she'd had to be deliberate about the blinds from day one.

It was a Tuesday in early afternoon, between calls, when she glanced up from her laptop and saw a gap in the slats she hadn't noticed before.

And through it, in the Whitfields' bathroom window directly across the gap, Tom. Completely naked. Reaching for the shower handle.

She should have looked away immediately. What she actually did was look for one more second than was defensible, because what she saw in that second rearranged something in her chest.

He was lean and toned in the unglamorous functional way of a man who worked physically rather than at a gym, sandy hair, and what hung between his legs, even soft, was already noticeably thick despite its modest resting length. Below it, his balls hung low and heavy, smooth and hairless, while the hair above his shaft was kept trimmed close to the skin rather than shaved bare. Diane could tell just from the heft of it all that there was more on the way.

Tom looked up.

Their eyes met through the gap, through both windows, across maybe fifteen feet of side yard air, and there was no pretending it hadn't happened. Diane felt heat flood up her neck and into her face and lower. She didn't look away first. Neither did he.

Then he reached for a towel, but he didn't wrap it around himself the way a flustered man would. He just held it.

She sat there for a long moment after he stepped back from the window, pulse going harder than the moment should have justified.

Fifteen minutes later, she heard a knock at her front door.

She knew before she opened it.

Tom was standing on her porch in gym shorts, a plain white tee, and sandals, hair still slightly damp at the temples. He had the look of a man who'd made a decision in the shower and walked it straight over before he could talk himself out of it, and the look of a man already regretting it.

"I should probably apologize," he said.

"For being naked in your own bathroom?"

A laugh escaped him, surprised out of him. "For not looking away."

"You weren't the only one."

His smile faded at that.

"No," he said quietly. "I guess I wasn't."

Neither of them moved. He rubbed the back of his neck, looked past her into the house, looked back at her.

"I walked to your driveway twice," he admitted.

"Twice?"

"First time I turned around. Got halfway back to my own porch."

"And the second time?"

"I figured if I went back inside, Ashley was going to ask what was wrong with me. And I didn't have an answer that wasn't going to sound insane."

Diane crossed her arms, more for something to do with them than out of any real defensiveness. "So you came here instead."

"I don't really have a good explanation for that part," he said. "I'm sorry. This is -- I'm aware of how this looks."

"How does it look?"

He hesitated. "Like exactly what it is."

She should have closed the door then. She knew that even as she didn't do it. Instead she leaned against the frame and looked out at the street -- normal houses, a kid two doors down riding a bike in slow looping circles, somebody's sprinkler ticking on a timer.

"How old's your little guy now?" she asked, apropos of nothing, because it felt safer than anything else available.

"Just turned one. Two weeks ago."

"Sleeping any better?"

Tom let out a short, humorless laugh. "No. If anything it's worse. He's into everything now, into our bed half the night, up at five most mornings whether we like it or not." He rubbed his jaw. "I'm not complaining about him. He's great. I just feel like I haven't slept more than four hours straight in over a year."

"That's brutal," Diane said. "It does end. Eventually."

"Everybody keeps saying eventually like it's a comfort."

"It's the only honest thing anyone can tell you."

A tired smile cracked through despite himself. Diane felt an answering one tug at her own mouth before she suppressed it.

"How's the move treating you two?" she asked. "Settling in okay?"

"Slowly. Boxes everywhere still." He glanced past her shoulder into the quiet house behind her, the stillness of it. "Your place is awfully quiet for a house with three kids in it."

"School doesn't let out for another two hours. And Russell took the older two to a dentist appointment after, so it'll be a while yet."

"I know," Tom admitted, a little sheepishly. "I saw them all pile into the car this morning. That's part of why I knocked instead of just standing in my driveway feeling insane by myself."

Diane raised an eyebrow at that, something between amusement and a fresh spike of nerves. "So this wasn't entirely spontaneous."

"The walking over here was spontaneous," he said. "The knowing nobody else was home was just -- observation. I wasn't exactly being subtle today, in case that wasn't clear."

"Russell did the same thing with the garage. Eight years ago. Half those boxes are still out there."

"That tracks." He looked down at the porch boards, then back up. "You run every morning."

Diane looked at him properly for the first time since he'd started talking about the baby.

"You've noticed?"

"Everyone notices."

"That's not the same thing."

He held her gaze, didn't look away this time. "No," he said. "It isn't."

The silence that followed had a different texture than the one before it. Diane felt it settle into her chest, heavy and warm.

"Tom," she said. "I'm married."

"I know."

"Happily, mostly. He's a good father."

"I believe you."

"This is a terrible idea."

"I know that too. Doesn't seem to be stopping either of us."

She looked at him for a long moment. Forty-six years old, primary breadwinner, mother of three. She couldn't remember the last time a man had looked visibly relieved just to be standing near her. Russell loved her, she knew that, genuinely, but love had become logistics somewhere along the way. School pickups. Grocery lists. Mortgage payments. A shared calendar that tracked everyone's needs except, somehow, ever hers. She had stopped being a woman to him at some point without either of them noticing the exact moment it happened, and become infrastructure instead..

"Do you know what the worst part is?" she asked.

"What?"

"I liked being caught."

The words hung there in the warm afternoon air.

Tom stared at her.

Diane felt heat climb into her face, but she didn't take it back. "That's the truth."

"I know," he said.

"How do you know?"

"Because I liked it too. More than liked it." He took a step closer, the porch boards creaking under the shift in weight. "I haven't been touched in over a year, Diane. Not really. Not in any way that counted. I am completely out of patience for being polite about this."

She looked past him toward the quiet street. Normal houses. Normal afternoon. Normal lives continuing on either side of them, completely unaware. She thought about Russell. About dinner. About tomorrow morning and how she would absolutely, certainly regret this by then.

Then she looked back at Tom.

He was still standing there, hands in his pockets now, waiting for her to tell him to leave. Giving her every opportunity to.

She stepped aside.

"Come in."

She didn't take him straight to the bedroom. She led him into the kitchen instead, poured two glasses of water from the filter pitcher out of sheer habit, and didn't drink hers.

"A year," she said, leaning against the counter. "That's a long time."

"Longer than that, honestly, if I'm being precise about it. The last few months before he was born don't really count either." Tom set his glass down without drinking from it. "I'm not trying to make Ashley sound like the villain here. She's exhausted. She didn't sign up to stop wanting this and neither did I, but here we are." He looked at her directly. "I'm done waiting for it to fix itself."

Diane felt something tighten in her chest at the certainty in his voice, the lack of hesitation in it now compared to the porch.

"I know exactly what that feels like," she said. "The waiting part, anyway."

"I figured you might."

The kitchen light was doing something soft and gold through the window over the sink. Tom closed the distance between them without announcing that he was going to, until there was no real distance left at all.

"I've thought about you since the window," he said. "I'm not going to pretend otherwise, and I'm not going to be careful about saying it."

"I don't want careful," she said. "I've had careful for years."

He reached up and tucked a strand of hair back behind her ear, his hand staying against her jaw, his thumb tracing along her cheekbone with a confidence that hadn't been there a few minutes earlier.

"Good," he said. "Because I'm not in the mood to ask permission for every single thing right now."

Something in his voice when he said it landed low and immediate in her, and she didn't bother hiding the way her breath caught.

He noticed. Of course he noticed. He smiled, slow and certain, and took her hand.

"Bedroom," he said. It wasn't a question.

In the bedroom he pulled his own shirt off without waiting for her to undress him, and she got her first full look at him in proper light. Lean, defined through the shoulders and forearms in the specific way manual work builds a body.

"Clothes off," he said. "All of it."

She did, watching his face as she did it, and he watched right back without any pretense of restraint, his eyes moving over the soft full weight of her like a man finally getting something he'd been denied for longer than was reasonable.

"You're exactly what I pictured through that window," he said. "Better, actually."

He stepped out of his shorts and boxers and she got a proper look at what she'd only glimpsed through two windows and fifteen feet of air. Already half hard and thickening further under her gaze, the head flushing as blood found its way there. Below, his balls hung low and heavy, completely smooth, swaying slightly with his movement, and above his shaft the hair was kept close-cropped and neat rather than shaved bare, a deliberate, well-maintained groom rather than an accident of laziness.

"You take care of yourself," she said, something appreciative in her voice.

"I have time for some things," he said. "Just not the things that actually matter to me lately."

She reached out and ran her palm along the underside of him, feeling him grow heavier and harder in her hand, then let her fingers trail down to cup his balls gently, testing their weight.

"These too," she said quietly. "Christ, Tom."

"Later," he said, easing her hand away with a faint, knowing smile. "Right now I want my mouth on you."

He didn't ask if she wanted his mouth on her. He simply lowered her onto the bed, knelt between her thighs, and pushed them apart, and stopped for a moment just looking.

She'd shaved two weeks ago, on a whim, trimming everything close and leaving a neat narrow strip just above, something she hadn't done since her twenties. She'd done it half hoping Russell would notice. He hadn't said a word, hadn't even seemed to register the difference, and she'd quietly filed the whole thing away as one more small disappointment in a list that had gotten too long to keep track of.

"Jesus," Tom said quietly, running his thumb along the strip before he did anything else. "You did this for someone."

"I did it for myself," she said. "Nobody noticed."

"I noticed," he said, looking up at her. "I noticed immediately."

Something in the way he said it, the simple fact of being seen, hit her harder than she expected. He pressed a kiss to the inside of one knee before working his way higher with a focus that told her exactly how much pent-up attention he had to spend, taking his time over the strip itself, tracing it with his tongue before moving lower to where she was already slick and warm and clearly more affected by the last thirty seconds than she wanted to admit.

She arched up off the mattress with a sharp gasp when his tongue finally found her properly.

"Oh God," she breathed. "Oh God, yes, right there."

He worked her exactly how he wanted to, reading her reactions and using them, sliding two fingers into her while his tongue circled her clit, and she felt her whole body start to shake under a level of attention she hadn't felt directed at her in longer than she wanted to admit.

"Tom," she gasped. "Tom, don't stop, please don't stop, I'm so close--"

He didn't stop, and he didn't slow down for her either, working her right up to the edge and holding her there with total control until she came hard against his mouth, crying out loud enough that she was distantly grateful for the empty house.

He came up for air with a satisfied look on his face, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, and glanced down once more at the strip before meeting her eyes again.

"That's exactly what I wanted to hear," he said. "And for the record, this--" he ran his thumb along it one more time "--is staying exactly like this from now on."

"Get up here," she said, pulling at his shoulders.

"Not yet," he said, and the firmness in it sent another wave of heat through her. "Your mouth. Now."

She pushed him onto his back without protest and took him in hand, stroking the thick length of him a few times before lowering her mouth over him. She'd always been decent at this, but tonight something in her wanted to prove a point, wanted to be good at it in a way that left no room for doubt. She relaxed her throat and took him deeper than she normally allowed herself, feeling him hit the back of her throat, holding there a beat before pulling back to breathe.

"Jesus Christ," he groaned, head dropping back against the pillow, one hand finding the back of her head and pressing, not forcing, just communicating. "Deeper."

She gave him deeper, working her throat around him, one hand braced on his thigh, the other cupping his balls gently. She felt him swell further in her mouth, felt his hips twitch upward.

"You're going to make me come if you keep that up," he warned, and then, with a hand tightening in her hair, "but not yet. I want that pussy first."

He pulled her up by the hair, not roughly but with absolute clarity of intent, and guided her down onto him, positioning her himself rather than waiting for her to do it.

She gasped at the stretch of him immediately.

"Oh fuck," she breathed. "Oh my God, you're so thick."

He didn't ask if she was okay. He could feel exactly how okay she was, her body already softening and opening for him, her hips already trying to take more before she'd consciously decided to. He gripped her hips and pulled her down the rest of the way himself, seating her fully in one firm motion.

"You feel incredible," he said, voice rough. "So tight. You weren't lying about that being a problem at home."

"I want you to take charge," she said. "I'm so tired of being the one in control of everything."

"I already am," he said simply, and flipped them both in one decisive motion, pulling out only to push her face down into the mattress, hauling her hips up and back into position himself.

"Like this," he said. Not a question this time at all.

He pushed back into her, deeper, and she cried out into the comforter.

"You're so deep," she gasped. "God, you're stretching me out so much, I can feel every inch of you--"

"Tell me," he said, voice strained, hips already moving with a rhythm he had no intention of slowing down for.

"Like you're splitting me open," she moaned. "Like nothing's ever filled me up like this. You're destroying my pussy, Tom, I swear to God--"

"Good," he said, hand pressing flat between her shoulder blades, pinning her into the mattress with full intention now. "That's exactly what I'm doing."

He drove into her harder, faster, no longer pacing himself for her benefit, taking what he wanted at the rate he wanted it. He moved his hand from her shoulder blades down over the soft curve of her ass, kneading it for a moment, and then pressed his thumb against her other hole, slick from how wet she already was, and pushed it in slowly as he kept thrusting.

She gasped sharply at the added sensation, her whole body tensing and then melting into it at once.

"Oh God," she moaned. "Oh God, both at once, I can't--"

"You can," he said, working his thumb deeper, matching the rhythm of his hips. "You are."

The combination undid her composure entirely, every thrust now doubled in sensation, filled completely from both directions, and she met every stroke with a cry that grew louder rather than quieter.

"I'm going to come," she gasped. "Don't stop, don't you dare stop--"

He stuck his thumb deeper in her asshole as he reached underneath her with his other hand, finding her clit. He worked it exactly in time with his thrusts, taking her apart completely on his terms, and she came with a high-pitched whine muffled into the bedding. Her thick thighs trembled and her whole body clenched around him from every angle at once.

"On your back," he said, already pulling her into position before she could move herself. "I want to watch your face."

He pushed her thighs up and apart and drove back into her, deeper, faster, with the focused, almost desperate energy of a man working through more than a year of denial in a single afternoon.

"I've wanted this since the day you moved in," he admitted, hips still working without mercy. "Watching you run every morning. Your body. God, Diane, I am so far past being able to stop right now."

"Tom," she said, hands gripping his forearms. "Use me. I'm yours."

He grabbed both her wrists and pinned them above her head in one motion, holding her exactly where he wanted her, and she felt the second orgasm building faster than the first under the relentless certainty of his pace.

"I'm close," he said. Not a warning so much as a statement of fact. "Tell me where."

She looked up at him, something raw and unguarded crossing her face.

"Put a baby in me," she said.

He went still for half a second, eyes searching hers, but only half a second.
