"Because I still think it's stupid and a waste of time. But whatever, he's getting here in a sec so I can't just keep arguing," I explained into the phone.

"Yes, I'll tell him you give your best," I sighed. "Love you too Dad."

God he was frustrating.

I hung up the phone and checked my texts.

"Pulling in through the line now, just waiting on traffic," was the update.

"What kind of car?" I typed out quickly.

"Black Mercedes SUV," came the immediate response.

What was he, an Uber Black? A comic book movie villain? I rolled my eyes and huffed, before catching myself.

I should at least try to stay in a good mood, not be overly judgy, and go in with an open mind, I reminded myself.

I turned my phone off and stared at the slow-moving line of cars in the outer lane of arrivals. I couldn't see a black Mercedes SUV yet.

Something hit me from behind out of nowhere. I stumbled forward, knocking my tote off the top of my biggest suitcase, and whipped around to see a young boy running amok on the sidewalk.

"Watch it!" I snapped as he hustled away.

"Sorry!" an older woman, presumably his mom, apologized to me. She had her hands full with suitcases and seemed to be trying to corral her kid, running off in the same direction after him.

I sighed and put my tote back on top of my big suitcase.

I just wanted to go home.

This would be my first summer ever not staying at home. I had just finished up my sophomore year of college, and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.

My dad was a hedge fund manager, and frankly I'd never had a reason to want to work. School was never a primary concern of mine - I'd coasted along just enough in high school to get into our state school, and I was coasting along just enough through my Communications major to still be on track to graduate in 4 (and a half, but whatever) years while taking full advantage of the fun of college.

I was smarter than I looked, or what my grades suggested, but I'd never had any real motivation to do any job or career in particular. So why bother trying?

My parents had been getting on me since I started college that I had to figure out what I should do with my life.

Dad wanted me to get a job in finance like him and go work in NYC. But that sounded so boring, and like a lot of work.

So my mom got it in her brain while I was away at school that I should be a lawyer. Even though I'd never once expressed an interest in the law, like ever. But the decision was made, without me having a say, that I would spend the summer working in a law firm.

Dad then went overboard and called up his lawyer, one of his old college buddies, and asked him about me living and working with him for his firm. And that was that, it was settled. I was going to San Diego to work for my dad's attorney and live with his family for the summer.

It could've been worse. I figured the job would be cushy, I'd probably just have to sit at a desk and answer the phones or emails all summer or something. Plus the weather was phenomenal, and San Diego was gorgeous.

Unfortunately I wasn't 21 yet, and I didn't know how strict the lawyer guy or his family would be. So I didn't count on being able to have a ton of fun going out, but I was still holding out hope.

One thing I knew for sure was that the attorney's house had a pool. I'd looked it up on Zillow. One of my suitcases was brimming with swimsuits - I couldn't wait to tan by a pool in the California summer sun.

The honk of a black Mercedes pulled me out of my daydreaming.

Fuck, that was him.

The SUV pulled up right in front of me and stopped. The driver door opened, and the attorney walked around to me.

"Hey, Taylor? I'm Marcus," he introduced himself.

Marcus wasnothinglike what I'd expected. I'd only ever heard stories about him or mentions about legal stuff my dad needed. In my head, he was a crusty, round, old white guy.

But standing in front of me was the exact opposite. Marcus was probably 6'5 and absolutely jacked. He looked like he could pick me up and snap me as easily as a twig.

He was black, with a rich skin tone the color of dark chocolate. His head was shaved, with a full black beard that was starting to show signs of greying. His polo shirt clung tightly to his thick frame, showing off full sleeve tattoos on both arms. Small studs shone in his ears, and his bright white smile beamed.

Uhh, why was my dad's attorney a total DILF??

"Hey Marcus, nice to meet you!" I recovered after my moment of swooning. "Yes, I'm Taylor."

We shook hands - his hand totally engulfed mine. Not hard to do when I was 5'1 and he was damn near a foot and a half taller than me.

"Let me help you with your bags," he volunteered, and hoisted my things into his trunk. I couldn't help but admire the muscles in his arms work as he lifted the heavier suitcase.

"The things your parents shipped got here yesterday," he let me know. I could only fit so many clothes in 2 carry-ons and 2 checked bags.

"Perfect, thank you!" I responded. I didn't think of myself as being a super bubbly person internally, but sorority rush had taught mereally wellhow to turn it on for strangers when I needed to. "My dad says hi."

"That's very nice, tell him I say hi back."

Marcus got back in the SUV right as the car behind us honked to get us moving. I clambered in the passenger seat and we pulled out of the airport.

"You don't really look a ton like an attorney," I said pointedly as we pulled onto the highway. "Like, not in a bad way," I clarified.

"Thanks?" Marcus replied with a smile. "I'll take that as a compliment."

"Yeah just the earrings and tattoos. And like, you're huge."

Marcus chuckled. "I've definitely gotten that before a time or two. I like to have my own style, I guess. I'm not a big fan of blending in, I want to make a statement when I walk in the room."

"That makes sense, I guess," I replied.

"And I was a linebacker in college," he continued. "Played 4 years of D1 football and then a few years in Canada before I called it quits. So that's the size."

"Ahh," I pondered. My dad definitely had not mentioned that his lawyer was a former college football player. "Well I'm sure you have a lot of great stories. The football players at our school definitely get up to some fun."

I'd hooked up with one or two. Ok, three.

Four if you count punters, but that basically doesn't count. He didn't tell me what position he played before I'd fucked him, and if he had I probably wouldn't have done it.

Marcus chuckled. "Well it was the 90s. We were kinda stars around campus, even if we weren't actually that good. Yeah, it was a fun time."

He explained how he'd met my dad - they were paired together for a semester-long project in some freshman econ class or something, and became good friends all through college after that. When Marcus became a lawyer after quitting football, my dad had immediately gotten him on retainer.

"So we go way back," he finished. "I've heard stories about you since you were a kid. I think I can remember hearing about when you were born actually."

"Wow, that's crazy. Do you have kids of your own?"

"Oh yeah, how could I forget? My wife Henrietta and I have one girl, Charlotte. She's a little younger than you, she's finishing up her last year of high school."

"Gotcha," I nodded. So Charlotte was 18ish, two years younger than me. Hopefully she was chill. Maybe it would be fun to have another girl my age around the house.

After a bit, Marcus turned the conversation to my interest in law. I wasn't sure if I should make something up, or what exactly my parents had told him. But I pretended to seem like I was interested and knew what he was talking about as he explained the ins and outs of his job to me.

My ears perked up more when he started explaining a little about what I'd be doing, but it sounded super easy from what he'd said.

Since I wasn't a lawyer or law student I couldn't do any actual legal work, so it mostly seemed like standard intern/secretary stuff. Which hopefully meant cushy desk time, preferably with a computer screen no one else could see so I could online shop during the day without having to worry about nosy people looking over my shoulder.

Our conversation took up the rest of the drive. We pulled into the driveway of their house, just outside the city. It was a pretty sweet place. It looked pretty typical SoCal: white stucco walls, a red roof, vines climbing up trellises on the walls.

We got out, Marcus helped me with my bags, and we made our way inside.

The inside of the house was huge, and gorgeous. They had a chandelier in the loft entryway and a curved staircase leading up to the second floor. It definitely made a crazy first impression.

"Hello, hello!" I heard a woman's voice call out.

A second later, a woman popped out around a corner. She looked to be in her 40s or 50s, with short, frizzy black hair and beautiful caramel-colored skin, a fair bit lighter than Marcus'. She was tall too, definitely way taller than me, with gorgeous long legs.

"You must be Taylor, I'm Henrietta," she said with a smile as she approached. "It's so nice to meet you! I'm so excited to have you here with us for the summer!"

She leaned in and brought me into a hug.

"Forgive me, I'm a big hugger," Henrietta explained. "But when I heard you'd be staying with us, we were so excited! Hopefully the summer will be a lot of fun."

"Yes, hopefully! I couldn't be more excited either," I lied a bit. Being home would be way better. But life could be a lot worse than staying here for the summer too, in a gorgeous house with a gorgeous family. Marcus especially.

Another girl came bouncing into the entryway. "Hey, I'm Charlotte, nice to meet you," she waved to introduce herself. She was a few years younger than me, with glowing youthful skin. Her hair and skin were almost carbon copies of her mom, although she had her hair way longer, halfway down her back. But you could see all the similarities to Marcus in the face, her eyes especially. Plus she was super tall as well, like almost 6 feet.

I was going to be positively surrounded by giants this summer, but oh well.

"Hey I'm Taylor. So great to meet you!" I replied back, channeling all my sorority rush energy.

"Let's get your bags put away and get you settled in!" Henrietta said. "We put all the stuff your parents shipped in one of the guest beds."

Marcus went to the store to get dinner stuff while the girls gave me a house tour. The house was huge and beautiful. Henrietta explained that her dad was a pretty wealthy businessman, and obviously I assumed that Marcus did really well at work too. Henrietta had been a biomedical researcher for 25 years, but semi-retired from that a few years ago and now taught pilates and pottery classes for fun.

While the whole house was incredible, I was most wowed by the back patio and pool. It was set into the hill their house was on, so beyond the pool was just trees and greenery for a while up the hill until the next row of houses a ways further up. It was private and had a nice sun/shade split, plus tons of chaise lounges for tanning and an outdoor kitchen for grilling.

I wished my parents had this setup, but they always said pool maintenance was too much work for it to be worth it.

"Holy shit, I will be spending my entire summer out here," I laughed.

"Good, it could get some more use," Henrietta said. "We don't use it nearly enough."

"Well maybe this is our sign to," Charlotte added.

"For sure, we'll tan back here all the time," I said to Charlotte, trying to extend an olive branch.

"Definitely!" she replied.

"Ugh, you two are adorable!" Henrietta said. "Don't make me regret not giving her a sister!" she joked to me.

"I'll try not to," I replied with a smirk.

We walked around the rest of the house, before me and Charlotte were going to go back upstairs to unpack all my stuff.

"It's past 6, almost dinner soon. Do you guys want a glass of wine while you work?" Henrietta asked.

"Sure," Charlotte replied quickly.

I knew that I was going to have to sus out how strict/cool the family was, but this seemed like a good sign. Clearly they didn't care about drinking.

"Uhh sure," I replied as well.

Henrietta poured us all glasses of white wine and stayed downstairs to get the kitchen ready for dinner. Charlotte and I headed upstairs to unpack all my bags.

It was slow work, and I began regretting how many bags I brought.

But Charlotte and I got the chance to talk, and we could not stop talking.

She was a senior, about to graduate in a month. She was going to Berkeley in the fall to play volleyball, so I knew she was clearly both way smarter and more athletic than me. But in spite of that, she was super chill and down to earth. We both were massive Lorde fans which brought us together, and loved a lot of the same TV shows. Charlotte clearly had better attention to detail than me because she was picking up on stuff in White Lotus that I for sure hadn't even noticed.

We were maybe halfway or a third of the way through unpacking and had just finished our glasses of wine when we heard Marcus get home.

"Dad's home," Charlotte pointed out. "We should head down for dinner in like 10 or 15."

"Okay perfect," I replied. I'd just finished unpacking one of my carry-ons and scanned the room, looking for my next target. Maybe the box of dresses that had gotten shipped from home, by the exterior door.

"Where does that door go by the way?" I asked, finally getting curious about the door off of my bedroom.

"Oh, wait, this is awesome," Charlotte said first. "Come here, it's sick."

She opened the door and stepped out onto a wide balcony overlooking the back patio and hills. Peeking out to the left was a partial view of the city and the sunset. It was stunning. The early May sun was beginning to descend already, casting long shadows over everything.

"Wow," I took it all in.

"The best part is it connects to my room," Charlotte said. Sure enough, there was another door to the right of mine that led into Charlotte's room.

"Can I tell you a secret?" Charlotte asked.

"Uh yeah, of course," I responded, getting excited.

"Well it's not a secret, I guess. My parents know and are chill with it," she explained. "But I come out here to smoke a joint most nights."

She motioned to the two Adirondack chairs on the balcony and the little table between them.

"Wait, that's so awesome!" I giggled. "We're gonna be best friends."

Charlotte laughed back. "Well I'm glad I have a new smoke buddy."

"Oh, absolutely. We'll be here every night, are you kidding me? With this view?" I drank it all in for a moment.

"So your parents are like super chill with everything?" I asked. "Drinking, weed?"

Charlotte nodded her head. "I mean within reason I guess, but they don't care if I smoke or drink at home. As long as I'm safe and they know where I am. I guess they don't know I have a vape, but I don't know if they would care anyway."

"Oh good," I said, immediately pulling my own vape from my pocket and taking a puff. "I was waiting til I was alone, I didn't know how cool everyone would be."

Charlotte pulled out hers and took a hit in solidarity. "Girl, I'm cool as hell. Don't worry."

"Good, I won't," I smiled. "I'm so excited for the rest of the summer, it's gonna be a blast."

"Agreed," Charlotte grinned back.

We headed back in to do a little more unpacking and kept yapping about Charlotte's friend group who I was supposedly going to meet soon.

"Girls!" A yell interrupted our bonding session. "Dinner's ready!"

The two of us headed downstairs, helped ourselves to a big bowl of the pasta, and sat with Henrietta and Marcus at the dinner table.

Both Henrietta and Marcus wanted to get to know me more, so dinner was mostly them asking questions, getting my life story, setting the scene for the summer. I got to know more about how they met and what Charlotte was like as a kid.

For all intents and purposes, they seemed like the perfect family. I was waiting for there to be a catch somewhere, but I didn't get it. How were they all so nice, smart, successful, and stunning? It didn't make sense.

"Now we also wanted to just talk through some ground rules for the summer," Henrietta explained as dinner was winding down. "We like to think of ourselves as pretty cool parents, but obviously we don't want anything happening to you either. So we'd ask that you just always let us know where you are and who you're with to make sure you're safe. Be home by a reasonable time on weekdays, or if you're staying over with someone just let us know. We don't care about smoking or drinking or anything, just be safe and responsible in whatever you do. But that's it!"

"We want you to have fun and enjoy your summer," Marcus added. "We were young once, we expect you, both of you," he said, eyeing over to Charlotte, "to get into a little mischief. Just be safe in whatever you do, and don't get arrested is all I have to add."

"Awesome, that all sounds good to me!" I replied. "I had no plans on getting arrested any time soon."

"Good," Marcus chuckled. "Although luckily I know some pretty good lawyers."

We all helped clean up, and then Charlotte and I went back upstairs to finish unpacking. It took another hour or so, but we finally finished.

"J to celebrate?" Charlotte asked, raising her eyebrows.

"You won't find me saying no," I laughed.

"Good. Mom buys all the stuff for me since I'm not old enough yet," she explained as we crossed the balcony back over to her room. She grabbed a box from a drawer in her nightstand and opened it to reveal all her gardening supplies and cache.

"Does your Mom smoke too?" I inquired.

"No but she takes edibles all the time," Charlotte explained. "She getsshmackedbefore every pottery class she teaches. Says it helps her feel the clay better."

"Well good for her," I chuckled at the thought.

Charlotte and I ventured out to the balcony and sparked up. We chatted, staring out at the night sky - you could see just a few stars through the light pollution & city haze. But the hills, moon, and city skyline made for a beautiful smoking view.

The joint dwindled down quickly, but we kept talking for a while afterwards. It felt nice having a girl my age around the house. My brothers were both 6 years apart from me on either side, so I always felt a little isolated age-wise and was sorely lacking feminine energy to vibe with. I got the sense that Charlotte appreciated having someone else there too.

Eventually it got late, and Marcus was going to show me around the office tomorrow, although I wasn't going to officially start until the next Monday, so I had an early morning wakeup.

Charlotte and I both said our goodnights and went to bed. I sank back into the comfy pillows and realized how much more excited I was for the summer now than I had been when I woke up this morning.

The 7 AM alarm rudely jolted me out of my high spirits.

Marcus was already fully dressed and mostly through breakfast by the time I got downstairs. I put on nice blue jeans, a white blouse, and a sleek dark grey blazer. I had taken some time to fluff my hair and put on some makeup, but didn't go too crazy. I'd never had to dress up to go into work before, but I definitely thought I fit the "smart, sassy, independent, young woman" vibe with my OOTD.

"Morning," Marcus remarked, staring up from his iPad and plate of eggs. "I made enough eggs for you too, and there's bread for toast in the pantry."

"Oh, thank you," I tried to sound as grateful as I could through my grogginess. That was very nice of him. Such a perfect gentleman. I always wanted a man who would cook me breakfast.
