"Lookie, lookie who it is," a cruel but amused sounding voice calls out as the large man enters the apartment's kitchen.
The cruel sounding voice belongs to Patrick, a forty-something year old man who lives in the large apartment along with his wife Janet who is ten years younger.
Patrick currently sits at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front of him that is spiked with whiskey. It is late afternoon but Patrick works at night so he only woke up thirty minutes ago. Next to that cup of coffee are several stacks of twenty and hundred dollar bills, all stacked nice and neat, recently counted.
The look on Patrick's face mirrors his tone, showing he believes he is the one in charge of the situation, and is the alpha in the room. This is somewhat at odds with his physical appearance as he is very thin and sick looking, the signs that he enjoys a lot of the product that he sells.
Patrick isn't alone in his kitchen as around him are three of his "employees," all with the same sort of smirk that Patrick has. These men are far larger and healthier than Patrick, and is why he feels he is in charge. Being paid well, the men are loyal to Patrick and his wife, willing to do just about anything they are asked.
All four men in the kitchen know the man that's been led into the kitchen. They know him because he used to live in the apartment across the hall. He's been in this apartment before, many times. He even worked for the organization briefly.
"Look boys, Thomas has graced us with his presence," Patrick says condescendingly, looking around at his goons who sit around the room.
"Thomas has returned. Thomas, my former neighbor and a convicted woman-beater," Patrick announces with taunting glee.
Thomas doesn't say anything to Patrick's taunts. He's simply walked into the kitchen, stoic and calm, giving the room a quick glance to spot all of Patrick's goons. Calmly he walks slowly from the kitchen door to the table that Patrick sits at.
What Thomas saw in his glance doesn't surprise him. Patrick and his wife Janet run a low-level drug ring out of their apartment, doing so even when Thomas lived across the hall. So spotting baggies of drugs on the counter, guns on the table or stacks of cash being counted is nothing new.
Thomas does notice how the drug ring isn't the low-level affair it once was. In the couple of months that Thomas has been away he can tell how it's grown. This doesn't surprise Thomas as he had already heard how well his former neighbors are doing. How they stepped up their game, getting into new fields and hired more goons.
"Alright. Starting to creep me out, man. Why are you acting so fucking weird?" Patrick then asks Thomas as Thomas still hasn't said anything. He's just looked at Patrick with a serious expression that Patrick can't read.
When Patrick asks this, he pulls out a large knife from his belt and puts it on the table In front of him. It's clear Patrick does this as a warning, trying to let Thomas know how Patrick is in charge. That it'll take a single word to fuck him up.
The reason why Patrick is unnerved is that Thomas is normally very charming. He's the type that you call when you want to go drinking. The guy that does crazy, stupid stuff that you can laugh at the next day. The one that is always up for a good time and is everyone's friend. But tonight there's no hint of how he used to be.
"Hello Patrick. I came to ask a question," Thomas finally says. When he speaks, his voice doesn't sound like the voice Patrick is used to. Normally Thomas is normally upbeat and friendly, but this Thomas sounds as serious as a heart attack.
"That so?" Patrick asks, amused. He then grabs the knife and twirls it with the point on the table.
"I'm surprised to see you here, man," Patrick quickly says to change the topic, showing he wants to take control of the conversation.
"Last bit I heard about you is that Tina put a restraining order out on you once you got out of jail," Patrick states in a way that is clearly meant to be an insult.
"Yeah. She did. It's good for two years," Thomas replies, his voice lacking any emotion which unnerves Patrick.
"Then why are you here? Tina still lives in your old apartment, right across the fucking hall," Patrick says angrily, pointing across the hall.
"Are you stupid or something? She's still my neighbor, you jackass. If she hears you, hell, if Janet hears you, if anyone hears you, you're going to jail," Patrick tells Thomas in another threat.
"Hell, I feel like calling the cops myself," Patrick adds, leaning back in his chair to look relaxed.
"We don't like women-beaters here," one of Patrick's goons says, standing behind Patrick and against the only other door in the kitchen. He stands like this to look intimidating.
"Do yourself a favor and get the fuck out of here before we do to you what you did to Tina," another man says, this one sitting in a chair pulled into a corner. This man has taken a break counting money to be on guard for Thomas, in case Patrick orders to take him down.
Thomas doesn't respond to any of them. He just keeps looking at Patrick with an unreadable expression.
"Like I said, I have a question. So why don't you just get Janet now instead of making me wait? Everyone here knows she is the one in charge," Thomas states, still in that emotionless manner.
"Give the word boss. I'll make sure this fucking loser never gets the chance to hurt another female ever again," one of the goons growls as Patrick tenses up at being challenged.
"It's alright, John. That won't be needed. I can handle Thomas," Patrick says a moment later, wearing a large smile.
"Thomas, Thomas, Thomas," Patrick says, shaking his head as if this is just amusing instead of concerning.
"Thomas. Woman beating Thomas. Those who sent his girlfriend to the ICU. Thomas who got picked up sleeping on a fucking bench when the cops found him for what he did to her," Patrick states calmly, trying to use his words to twist a non-existent knife.
"You heard what happened, didn't you?" Thomas asks Patrick. He asks with a real sense of curiosity, wanting to know the answer.
"You and Janet both could hear us, right? Could hear our fights. Hear us arguing nearly every day," Thomas adds on as if not wanting any sort of confusion about what he's asking.
"Oh, fuck yeah. Everyone in the fucking building heard you. Yelling, screaming, breaking shit. Then the evitable sound of you kicking the shit out of your girlfriend," Patrick answers, sounding disgusted.
Thomas nods once. It's a nod that seems to confirm what Patrick said. There's no other emotion except for a fraction of a moment when Thomas looks ashamed, but it quickly passes.
"Why you do hit girls, Thomas? Are you insecure? Is it because you're mad because you got a little dick?" Patrick's asks, causing the others to laugh.
"Nah, he looks like a broke motherfucker. Probably mad he couldn't afford to buy toilet paper or some shit because he's a loser and took it out on her," another goon says, where all laugh.
"I beat Tina because I'm a piece of trash," Thomas tells the room. Only, he doesn't look away when he says it, nor does he look embarrassed. Instead he looks directly at Patrick when he says it, making it known he knows what he is.
"A piece of trash that would rather get violent with someone I loved rather than deal with my issues," Thomas adds.
"Oh please. Boo. Hoo. Everyone has issues. But everyone doesn't go around beating the shit out of their girlfriend," Patrick says, standing up as his frustration and anger rises. As if wanting to make a point, Patrick grabs his knife and uses it to point at Thomas.
"You are right. Everyone has issues," Thomas replies simply. Patrick waits for the "but," that he knows is going to come. Where the attacker will victim blame or convince themselves that they are the victim. Where they make what happens not their fault.
"There's no excuse for what I did. Nor do I blame anyone else," Thomas tells Patrick, stunning his former neighbor.
Patrick's friends look at each other, getting uncomfortable at the way Thomas is acting. Each of them are on guard, wanting Thomas to leave. Patrick is the most uncomfortable, as he can't seem to get control of the situation, even if Thomas isn't really doing anything.
"I know I've only been gone a couple of months, but you upgraded," Thomas says, ignoring all that was just said about his crimes.
Thomas motions around at the kitchen, where evidence of the crime-ring is clearly seen. There's no attempt by Patrick or the others to hide it either, as there's a tray of small baggies that are clearly filled with cocaine.
"Nah, bitch. You had your chance to be part of this. You quit. Too late to come back now," Patrick replies, finally figuring why Thomas has come back. Patrick fully believes that his former neighbor has come back because he wants to work for them again. That he no doubt needs money.
"Tina didn't want me to have any part in what you do. Said it was ok to hang out, but didn't want me mixed up with anything like this. Wanted me to stay straight," Thomas tells Patrick, again without any emotion.
"I would get so mad at her, thinking she didn't understand. We were so broke. I would work twelve or fourteen hours days for shit pay, getting yelled at by losers that had no business being in charge. I made no money, but she would demand that I stay straight and legal. Said it wasn't worth it if something happened," Thomas continues, seemingly ignoring Patrick.
"She made me quit, when I worked here for that week. She didn't care that I made more in a week working nights than I did in a month at my job. And to prove that I was a piece of shit, I took out my anger of having to quiet on her...every night," Thomas explains, his eyes getting a faraway look.
"Would get home after working a long day and instead of trying to improve our lives, I would blame her. Blamed her until I lost that fucking job, where I sent her to the hospital," Thomas keeps on, his eyes unfocused as he remembers the night. His lips tremble for a moment, overwhelmed by what he did.
"Thank god Tina wised up and called the cops on your dumb ass," Patrick proclaims, again saying it with a great amount of scorn. This manages to bring Thomas out of his daze where he regains the emotionless manner. Only instead of making Patrick feel better and in charge of the situation, he gets even more on edge as Thomas doesn't take the bait.
"I would like to say I thank God every night that Tina had the strength to call the police. Thanks to her courage, she's finally able to start healing. To have something of a normal life with me out of the picture," Thomas says in a resigned sort of manner, acting briefly as if Patrick and himself are good friends again.
"But to say I thank God for that would taste a lie, so I can't say it, even if my heart knows it's true," Thomas then tells Patrick, even more resigned.
"Truth is, if she hadn't found her strength, I would have killed her, even if on accident," Thomas admits, a look of shame passing over his face.
"Why the fuck are you here, Thomas? I'm not your fucking therapist. I don't give a shit about how you feel or what happened. You got what you deserved beating her like you did. In fact, I think you deserve more. And I hope you got your ass beat every night you were locked up!" Patrick yells, his frustrations getting the better of him, making the rest of his group nervous. As Patrick yells, he stands up, wanting to seem more intimidating.
A long silence begins as Thomas looks at Patrick and Patrick glares at Thomas. Months ago these two could be called friends. They lived across the hall from each other and spent many of a nights drinking and hanging out. Where the four friends enjoyed each other's company.
"Like I said before, what I want, is to ask a question. So how about you get Janet?" Thomas then states, motioning to the door to the side of Patrick that leads to the hallway that leads to the bedrooms of the apartment.
"Nah. You got a question, you can fucking ask me," Patrick states angrily. His annoyance at not being considered the boss has gotten under his skin.
"Janet is the brains of this place. Everyone knows you are dumb as dog shit," Thomas answers, his tone slow but steady. There's no trembling or fear in his tone. He says this as he would say if it was raining.
"You do what you are told by her, like the good little boy you are. As does everyone else," Thomas states, motioning to the other men in the room.
What infuriates Patrick the most is that Thomas' face shows he fully believes this and it isn't just something to say to get under his former neighbor's skin. That his former friend doesn't think he's smart enough to take charge.
"That's big fucking talk coming from a woman-beater. You know, I could fucking kill you and the police would give me a fucking medal. They would throw me a fucking parade for making the world a better place by ridding it of a woman beater," Patrick threatens, holding the knife aggressively.
"Oh, I agree," Thomas muses what Patrick just said, still calm despite the other men slowing stepping forward, knowing This is going to end badly.
"The world would be a better place without people like me. Just like it'll be a better place without any of the assholes in this room," Thomas says, and laughs a humorless laugh.
"This...is boring the shit out of me," Janet suddenly says, stepping in from the door behind Patrick, revealing she's been listening in the entire time.
When Janet steps in, Patrick and the others relax. They look relieved that she's here and that she'll know what to do. And from the way Janel holds her head up, she believes she knows exactly what to do.
Janet walks in and goes to a cabinet. She opens it up and pulls out a fancy bottle of booze, pouring some into a special glass. As she does this all can see the designer tank top she wears as well as her short-shorts which shows her nearly entire tattooed body. Just like they can see all the money that is spent to keep her body in the shape that it is in, from her manicured nails to perfectly styled hair.
Turning to face Thomas, Janet takes a sip of her drink while leaning back against a counter. Much like Patrick, Janet can see how different Thomas has become. That the friendly, loser neighbor is now serious to a concerning level.
"Hello, Thomas. It's been too long. Have you lost weight? Is that a new hair cut? How's the wife and kids? Still working as a mule lifting boxes?" Janet asks in a fast, flat voice, showing she doesn't care about Thomas at all.
"Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, you have five seconds to say why you are here," Janet warns and there's no hint of buffing in her tone. She is as serious as a heart attack, staring at Thomas right in his eyes.
Thomas doesn't respond to the threat. He doesn't say anything nor does he change his expression. Instead he looks at Janet, saying without words what he is thinking.
"If you have come for help to try and win Tina back, you can go ahead and fuck off. I won't let you hurt her any longer," Janet says, acting as her neighbor's protector.
Thomas suddenly starts to laugh. It's a quick series of laughter, but is real laughter, showing how outlandish he finds her statement to be. It is followed by a brief smile, where Thomas shows he finds what Janet says to be complete bullshit.
"Oh, you think it's funny what you did to my best friend?" Janet rages, her voice becoming higher pitched as she looks offended.
"I should cut your dick off for what you did, Thomas. You're the bad guy. We're the good guys. And we won't let you do anything to harm Tina," Janet warns.
"The...the best friend part. That's good," Thomas says, laughing again.
"I just have no question for you. Where's Tina, Janet?" Thomas asks simply, the ghost of a smile on his face.
"Are you fucking stupid? Or just deaf? I'm not telling you. She's free of you. Not going to let you put her in the hospital,AGAINyou fucking loser," Janet yells angrily.
Another bout of silence starts after Janet yells as Thomas doesn't respond. He just keeps staring at Janet. Even with Patrick on the other side of the table he's standing at, he only has eyes for Janet, like she's going to answer his question.
"Where's Tina, Janet?" Thomas repeats, this time much more serious.
"That's it, asshole. Time to go. Get the fuck out of my house," Janet orders then makes a motion for Patrick and the others. With that simple motion, the men all pull out weapons. All but Patrick pull out hand guns which they happily point at Thomas. One even makes a point of cocking his gun for effect.
Thomas doesn't react. He doesn't back up nor put his arms up. Instead he keeps looking at Janet as if waiting for her to answer his question. His eyes bore into her, making it known he isn't going to leave until he gets his answer.
"Five. Four. Three..." Janet starts to countdown, making it clear that once she hits zero, the others are to attack. Doing this excites the others as they have clear orders of what they are to do.
"I heard a rumor the other day. A rumor about you, Janet, and your busy little empire," Thomas says, his tone still eerily calm despite being seconds away from dying.
"Good for fucking-you," Janet spits back with venom.
"You should know my 'empire' doesn't call the cops. We'll handle your woman-beating ass and dump your body in a fucking dumpster," Janet states, unknowingly having stopped her countdown.
"You know...it's men like you...that's the reason the world is so fucked. Pieces of shit like you have no clue about the damage you cause. The trauma you leave. The years of pain and suffering you give from being the worthless, entitled, selfish pieces of shit you are," Janet berates at Thomas, her tone filled with venom.
For just a moment, Thomas reacts. A look of anger and pain flashes on his face which Janet spots even if none of the others do. She sees it clear as day and seizes upon it.
"How many times did you send Tina to the hospital? How many times did you knock her out? How many times did you make her lie about what you had done to her?" Janet growls, choosing her words carefully. She wants each one to have maximum impact.
"More times than I could admit," Thomas answers Janet, but not with pride. Instead he says it with sadness, knowing how true this is. That it is a truth he's had to confront.
This throws Janet off. She expected the man to yell or maybe rush her. But instead Thomas answers with what sounds like honestly.
"I am the bad guy, just like you said, Janet. The evil one. If this were a movie, I would be the one that the audience hopes dies," Thomas admits.
"Now, I am going to ask one last time, Janet. Where is Tina?" Thomas asks, staring at her.
"Gone. Moved away. Got the fuck away from you," Janet yells, but her voice cracks, showing how Thomas' calm nature has unnerved her.
Thomas tilts his head at this, showing this isn't the answer he wanted. Janet glares back, not wanting anyone to see that she's actually very scared. That she isn't used to anyone acting like this around her. Most are terrified of her.
"No one knows this, not even Tina, but I made a vow to God, or the universe, or maybe it was just to me, but I made a vow to stay away from Tina, forever," Thomas admits.
