Chapter One
"Sorry, Marda, yours and Bard's armor is going to take a bit more time," Jake stated as his friends stood out in his back field. Shion had cut to set her base for her gardens. Which she was currently working on with Adam's help, who was watering the tea bushes at the moment. Something Shion's mother had brought over the other day when her parents visited to view his home. He knew how envious they were when they viewed his anchor magic. However, Morvena didn't dwell on it as she launched into a very deep discussion about what he thought about the copy of the book he had given them as a dowry gift.
"No, I understand, Jake, just a little envious of all that scale they're wearing is all," Marda said with Bard nodding along.
"Not to nitpick, but can I ask why?" Bard asked, trying not to appear ungrateful since no one knew how to make dragon armor, at least not for free, like Jake was doing for them.
"To condense the bone into plate sections to be used as armor takes time and a lot of mana, especially for yours, Marda," Jake said, peering up at his very tall friend. "Plus, making a shield for her so she's not relying on mages for such things when she's not with any."
"Really? That difficult?" Bard muttered low, not to distract his friends as they moved around in their new armor.
"Yeah, I can make scale armor in an hour or so, no problem. Yet forming dragon bones into something it isn't takes time and magic, why there are very few people who do this. Also, why it's very expensive." Jake stated with a sly smile.
"So just to understand, how much would you be charging us if we weren't friends?" Marda asked, rolling her hand.
"The gold of two kingdoms," Jake said truthfully, since his weapons and armor were something he had created during the war, also why his eldest son was kidnapped and tortured when they couldn't use his son to manipulate him, or it was one of the reasons. It was another reason he didn't allow anyone to use his gadgets he made from his Homeworld.
"Then I'm genuinely glad we're friends," Marda spoke with a smug smile, getting a laugh out of Jake.
"So how does it feel?" Jake asked once he was sure they weren't being hindered by their armor.
"I didn't think it would be so light?!" Holly exclaimed as she twirled around in her new overcoat that she wore over her robes which was her stipulation in her armor since she wouldn't wear anything but her robes. The dragon webbing undercoat clung to her like glue; it almost felt like a second skin.
"And this will make us immune to fire?" Mark asked, running his hands along the scales that lined the sleeve of his new robe.
"Fire, ice, most magic except death magic, not even dragon hide can overpower that," Jake stated, knowing the other two were listening. "However, even dragon scale and bone can be overcome. Otherwise, how else are you wearing that," he said, pointing at it.
"True," Mark drew out the word. "Jake, before we leave, might we meditate together?"
"Don't go getting lost in there," Shion warned as Mark rose his meditation circle around the two of them as Jake took the west tower and Mark took the east.
"Man, I've missed that," Mark sighed as he leaned back on his hands, staring up at the sky with a smile on his face. "Bet you have as well?"
"Might have," Jake admitted.
"Jake, you must bathe before we leave," Shion said as she and Adam stood ready to leave for her sister's home, where they had been invited by her parents.
"Mark, it's time for us to leave," Holly said, standing at Shion's side as she and the others waited for Mark to conclude their mental travels. She knew how happy Mark was the last time he meditated with Jake.
"Right, right, thanks, Jake," Mark said, quickly getting to his feet. They waved goodbye as they walked through the doorway into their home. Hoping they all could get together soon, just to relax and reminisce about past adventures.
"Now you get down there and wash yourself," Shion said, pointing towards the front door of their home. Her mind flashed back to the night they returned home after the dragon hunt, to how she slowly undressed in front of him, displaying her shapely body to him as her clothes lined the floor of their bedroom. She watched how his red eyes studied her naked body as she did the same, noting every scar he had gotten in his long life, namely the ones the Dark Emperor had given him. She recounted how Jake lived up to his boast as her teeth tore at his sheets, as the sound of clapping filled the air with every thrust of his hips. Her sex permeated the air, their bedding marking it, and Jake in her scent that will always and only be the one that adorns his cock and bed. Her light touch on his chest as she rode him was the joy of the night, given how she had a front row seat to how he was enjoying how it felt deep inside of her. Every night since then, she's shown him the joys of being her future husband. Still, she couldn't get the thought of following after him down into the basement where their elven bath was. Something she would forever be thankful for.
"That's good, Adam, keep a hold of him, yet not too tightly," Jake instructed as Adam steered their carriage along the road. The only steadying hand he gave his son was the one on his back to keep him upright in the justling carriage. He didn't miss the smile Shion was giving at the sight of the two of them as she sat behind them on the bench seat beneath the canopy. "Whoa, there, Heliotrope," he uttered, his hand grabbed hold of the reins when Heliotrope tried to shake off Adam's grip on them. The moment he infused his own mana into the leather, causing the elk to calm down instantly. "Greedy little thing," Jake grumbled as the elk began to prance about.
"Can you blame Heliotrope, betrothed?" Shion asked with a coy smile. "After all, you know how loceros elks are greedy for their master's mana."
"True," Jake agreed, releasing his hold on the reins so Adam could continue with his tutelage. It's been a few months since Adam had come to live with him full-time time and he could already tell Adam had grown three inches so far. He wondered if that was because Adam was finally getting good food and decent night's rest, which was the cause of his growth spurt. Not that he minded, just meant Adam was growing up to be a decent person, or so he hoped. A proud smile was on his lips as Adam's progress as his squire played out in his mind, knowing he would be driving the wagon when Adam needed to when they ventured out on their own.
"We are attending the Duke's hunt, correct?" Shion asked, her yellow eyes peering at his back. Her gaze lingered on how the wind rippled the fabric of his shirt as they neared the gate to her sister's estate. Her mind recounted how her parents acted when they had verified Jake's House's standing in their world. She could take solace in the fact that they did apologize for their behavior that day.
"Yes, we should pack when we return. We must leave in two days to arrive in Emberglade on time," Jake answered, looking back at her. He noticed she wasn't surprised that they were departing, then it seemed to him she was expecting it.
"Good, I am looking forward to speaking with the Duchess," Shion said, sitting regally on the seat, looking prim and proper as expected of the Mistress of House Voss. "Does he not ever catch this deer he hunts?" she asked quizzically.
"Oh, he's cornered it, had it in his sights many of times. Yet green deer are sacred to the forest sect there, so he doesn't. He just likes to track them. Zaroth usually takes down another kind of deer, so the people involved would have something to feast on on the last night," Jake said, telling both of them what happened on the last night.
"Can I go with you and Uncle Zar?" Adam asked, a name Zaroth allowed him to call him when they were within their camp during the dragon hunt. Something that showed him just how strong his father and mother were as he saw the number of corpses that were strewn along the ground.
"Sure, but you must remember to pack the bow your mother made for you," Jake said, seeing Adam nodding vigorously, also seeing how Shion's cheeks were heating.
Sarahi and Gaelrin stood proudly displaying their wealth as was custom in the Dark Elf society. Morvena and Aelar stood out in their finest as Gaelrin's servants rushed about making sure everything was presentable as the head of his Marshal drove Jake's carriage towards his stables. Shion smiled down at Adam as he straightened out his tunic she had bought for him to show off their House's wealth without appearing to given Jake's demeanor. That would be unbecoming of his wife if she ignored her husband's wishes. Not that she minded, she liked the quiet life just as much as Jake did. Nevertheless, it didn't hurt to rub it in her sister's face.
"Greetings, Jake, and welcome once again to our home. It's always a pleasure to entertain the House Voss," Sarahi greeted kindly, despite the thinness of it. She kept her greed and annoyance hidden behind a carefully crafted mask she had honed after years of courtly life. "It seems being the Mistress of House Voss is suiting you well, sister," she uttered, smiling warmly at Shion, which didn't reach her eyes.
"Yes, it has," Shion retorted, pulling Adam into her, gently rubbing his shoulder.
"And how is the Scion of House Voss this late morning?" Aelar asked, peering down at Adam. He was growing to like the young lad, given their interactions.
"Father says my training as his squire is moving along well," Adam replied, feeling his father's comforting touch on his back.
"That is good, a son should honor his father and bring honor to one's family as well," Aelar said, imparting his wisdom onto Adam.
"I've heard a few rumors concerning your House, Jake," Morvena stated, taking the lead and ushering Jake and his house into her daughter's home.
"Oh? Such as, I didn't know my House, which is rather small, would garner such attention from the ladies of whichever noble house spread these rumors you've heard," Jake responded, catching the amusement in Shion's eyes.
"That you and my daughter took down a dragon that was harassing the people along the border, also the Duke was there during it," Morvena said, knowing what was said about it was easy enough for her to verify.
"Oh, that, yes, that did happen," Jake stated, noting how Sarahi and Gaelrin tried very hard to hide their shock at the news. "I'm sure the Duke has already put the skull on display to demonstrate that it wasn't a fluke."
"Yes, we've seen it on display in Emberglade," Aelar said, noting how Sarahi and Gaelrin were having trouble believing what they were hearing.
"Y-y-you killed a dragon?!" Sarahi stammered, not believing that her sister could do such a thing.
"I did, of course, my party and I had help from a very experience dragon hunter," Shion said smugly, waving over to Jake, who was paying Adam attention as he was asking what was what now that he wasn't so reserved with his words. She smiled at her adopted son, glad he was finally coming out of his shell, that he had put himself into to keep himself safe when he was living on the streets of Theliondel.
"He's... a dragon hunter?!" Sarahi uttered, not believing a word of it.
"I've been many things, dragon hunter, demon killer, etc., etc.," Jake retorted, the titles he had rolled off his tongue.
"A demon, you say..." Morvena mused, remembering about a century ago, a demon had been summoned by who she never knew. Yet she did remember the demon that tormented their people until someone had slain it. "I remember a story about a man, a mage they claimed was the one who killed such a fiend. Know anything about it?"
"I might," Jake mused with a knowing grin on his lips. Shion had her own on hers, knowing of the demon her mother spoke of.
"And what do you know of it?" Aelar inquired.
"That it's dead and you lost five towns to it in its attack before it was stopped," Jake said. He wasn't asked to kill it like he would have been if he had been given a quest to fulfill. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time when he was wandering the elven lands. That was how he met Zaroth in the first place. Zaroth was only a very young man, barely out of his childhood, and wasn't the Duke at the time. He was helping the town he was in, which was fighting the fires the demon had caused in its wake. By that time, he had reinvented himself, and his face had long since been lost to time. It was Zaroth who offered him a reward if he could travel to another town and ask for assistance to help with the fires. He didn't need to go anywhere. Jake simply put out the fires with ease, as if it were nothing to him, which it was.
That was when Zaroth pleaded with Jake when he saw him using magic. Since only mages could properly destroy a demon without it reforming on this plane of existence. Which he did without hesitation. It didn't take him long to track the demon down and the magi that were controlling it. Killing the magi was a simple matter altogether since they were just misguided fools taking out their frustrations on innocent people, or so that's what he thought. Jake didn't stop to ask why they were killing people. They had long since forfeited their lives the moment they took another, at least to Jake's thinking. The demon was another beast altogether. With his chain shattered with the death of the magi. The demon unleashed its full might at him since he was the only thing standing in its way. The battle lasted what he thought was four days; it was only two. It took him a few days afterwards to gather his strength. Then he returned to the town where he first met Zaroth, as was their agreement.
Zaroth was in awe at the sight of him. Jake assumed, rightly so, that Zaroth thought him dead. If Jake were truthful, if it was anyone else alone that might have been the case. Yet he was a battlemage, and his master had taught him how to survive on his own without the need of a party if he had to. Not that Zaroth knew he was at the time, it wasn't until a few years later, after Zaroth had tracked him down, did he receive his House ring. And so that was the beginning of their friendship.
"Do you know who it was that killed the demon?" Sarahi asked, trying to prove to her parents and her sister that Jake wasn't all that he seemed to be.
"I do," Jake nodded, noting Shion was trying to hide her knowing smirk.
"And just how do you know this man, as I recall that demon was killed long before you were born," Aelar stated, not to berate Jake, just stating the obvious.
"That's true, it was a long time ago for any other human out in the world, I'm not like them," Jake said vaguely.
"Yes, we figured that given how you have a book that there are only five... six now of that could possibly only gotten from the man himself," Morvena uttered, giving Jake a glance, noting how that smirk of his hadn't left his lips. "So you must be a very strange man to live so long. Slayer of the demon Momon," she said, catching Jake by surprise along with her eldest daughter. Not her youngest daughter, whom she didn't find the news as shocking as her other one did. "Did you not know that's what you were being called after that fight?"
"No... I did not," Jake admitted, revealing that he was indeed older than any normal human could be.
"There must be a story as to why you've lived for so long," Aelar stated, a look of pride that his daughter was wise enough to tie their Houses together. Especially since Jake was so close to the Duke and knew that would only enhance their own.
"But we won't pry it from you," Morvena said, seeing the confused look on Adam's face as he looked up at his father in confusion.
"Father? What does he mean?" Adam asked low, hoping he wasn't going to lose Jake anytime soon.
"Only that your father is a very brave man," Aelar uttered, smiling down at Adam so as not to worry the boy.
"I know he is," Adam said, looking up at Jake, recounting how they first met one another, with him standing over him, staring down the boys who used to torment him. It might not seem heroic to anyone; nevertheless, to him, that was the bravest thing anyone had ever done for him. His hand gently squeezed Jake's when he remembered how awestruck he was when Jake just healed him without a second thought, as he just sat there in befuddlement at the fact that someone was kind to him for the first time since his parents had abandoned him when the boys ran off. He didn't know what Jake did or why he did it. He was just happy someone didn't ignore the cruelty the townspeople had no problem inflicting on him. After that day, his life became so much better as Jake took him under his wing and made sure he was cared for even when he wasn't there. He always prayed Jake would return safe and whole so that he could repay the man who showed him such kindness when he thought he didn't deserve it. However, Jake corrected that the moment he uttered those words, telling him that he did, every child deserved it when they were hurt and afraid of the people around them. After that day, he made sure he never brought shame to Jake for all that he did for him. A loving warmth spread throughout his chest as Jake smiled down at him. Something he had never felt, even from his own birth parents.
"So Shion told us you were travelling in two days," Sarahi stated as their luncheon got underway.
"We are, the Duke's hunt will be taking place then," Shion answered for Jake as she sat regally in her seat, feeling her sister's envy as Sarahi's eyes cut to her. "Duchess Drisara," noticing how that definitely got her parents' attention, "told me that while Duke Regis and Jake," waving to him, "are off hunting she would be entertaining Adam and me," she informed them, slyly noting how her sister was gripping her knife and how her thumb was pressing on it. If she didn't know any better, she would say her sister's knife was on the verge of bending.
"The Duchess?!" Morvena muttered from behind her hand.
"Good fortune has blessed you, Jake," Aelar spoke, lifting his glass to him. All the while, he was contemplating on how they could latch onto this.
"One could say that," Jake mused, adding another slice of the honey-drenched ham onto Adam's plate when he asked for another serving. His hand lightly rubbed Adam's back as he thanked him before cutting into the ham steak.
"So how many dragons have you hunted in your life?" Gaelrin asked, wondering when his letter to his father, the head of the House of El, would arrive so his father could advise him on how to use this turn of fate to their advantage.
"Many," Jake spoke, knowing what Gaelrin was up to since that's all nobles' reaction when they learn of his involvement with dragons. He knew from his long life how to read a man or elf in this case. Gaelrin wasn't that brave enough to move against him. So he knew his home was safe from his prying hands. If he wasn't, his demon guard dog would take care of any intruders onto his land.
"A moment if you would, Jake of House Voss," Aelar spoke formally, catching Jake's attention as they parted as their lunch-in was over.
"Yes?"
"May we speak privately?" Aelar said, gesturing off to the right in the direction of Gaelrin's secondary sitting room.
"What's this about Aelar?" Jake asked as they walked into the sitting room.
"What is your relationship with the first daughter of House Eldrion?" Aelar asked, telling Jake about the rumors that reached him.
"There isn't a relationship there any longer. I ended it years ago; I just didn't know about High Elven rules for ending a relationship until your daughter told me about it a year ago. She was under some delusion that I would stay with a woman who sleeps around on me. She did not take to the gesture with dignity," Jake said, pondering what kind of nonsense Celine was trying to start.
