I would strongly recommend you read at least some of "The Bridge," "Badass," "The Auction," and "Simon," which provide the backstory for most of the characters in this story. And if you've been reading me, thank you for your continued support. Your comments are priceless, so please leave your wisdom so I might improve my writing.

Doyle - Part Three

I've been so caught up on offense lately, what with Clunky Doyle and all, that I stopped playing defense. And it looked like it was about to bite me in the ass. It all started with a phone call. The kind you don't want to get.

It was Russo. That pain in the ass. Telling me that she's been getting a lot of flack about the vigilantes. Those folks who have dumped hundreds of girls back on the street after they had been taken captive by Simon and his band of misanthropes. In a nutshell, us.

With all the human trafficking taking place in a society rife with corruption and low standards, that the F.B.I. should be going after us and not the people that keep us doing what we do is shameful. That I, a private individual of means, have to both rescue and provide for these poor girls is shame enough. Being pursued and hunted down for it is just plain wrong.

That I have to put millions into the Women's Recovery Hospital, as well as Todd Recovery and Acquisitions and be made suspect for my efforts is the last straw. And that's where it started. Some dumbass F.B.I. agent trying to make a connection between the hospital and whoever it is that is filling it with young women.

Fortunately for me, my business with Special Agent Carlotta Russo, for all appearances, seemed to be just that. Business. We'd only had a couple of meetings in person. All of our other communication was done on her secret burner phone, and not on her supercell. Everything appeared above board to the naked eye. And Russo was solid. She managed to keep our private conversations just that; private. And she had put her gambling problems behind her. It was like the sword of Damocles, waiting to drop on the first bet hung over her. It is as if I had single-handedly formed her into a flawless first-rate agent. Ever forward, always straight.

It was during the second week of January that Davante showed up at our place after speaking briefly with Duane. He wanted to talk, but did not trust any form of communication other than in-person.

We had gifted Harley and Davante a three-bedroom house from my real estate collection as a wedding gift. They knew we could afford it so they took it, sight unseen and without argument. It was outside of Downingtown, which put them fifteen minutes away. Harley came with him. Within the Royce family, there are no longer any secrets.

"Duane, there is a big push coming down from above to discover who the vigilantes are who are rescuing and aiding the government in rescuing all of these victims of trafficking. I know that they've got Russo under the gun down in D.C. and they are starting to twist my arm here in Philly. Because of the locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey that were liberated first, they are pressing me to assign teams to go after you guys. I know that you have Russo wrapped up in some way, but I can't count on every team to miss making the connection between RFS and the vigilantes."

Taking stock of all he said, I thought about it silently as the brothers spoke of alternatives to turning ourselves in. Well, I believe the best defense is a good offense, and that's what I proposed.

"It looks like we have to lead this investigationforthe F.B.I. We'll just have to point them in the direction we want them to go. You guys always pride yourselves on getting your man. It's a good thing for us they aren't looking for a woman. One they'd better never find."

"And?" Davante asked. "How do you propose to do this? What is the magic bullet you propose shooting out of that gun of yours?"

"We should have the blame laid squarely on the backs of those I am holding captive, and place the blame for what is happening now on Doyle. Who set up the last auction to be taken down? Blame Doyle. And blame Simon for the previous auction, and blame Peacock for what happened in Pennsy and Jersey. After all, they are all still at large and, with the right story, could have the finger pointed directly at them."

"So," Davante asked. "Do you think they will fall for Doyle as the ultimate boss who sold out all his peers and his superior to claim all the goodies? Do you really think that the F.B.I. will buy it? I don't."

"If we give them Doyle, and spread the rumor that he was the one behind all the deception that brought down his associates and superiors, then we can walk away."

"Sure, you can. You still have almost a dozen wanted felons locked up associated with the trafficking and the auctions, and that just ain't goin' away. We at the F.B.I. will search endlessly until they are brought to justice."

"What can we do to get them to put it on the back burner?" Duane asked his brother.

"Giving them Doyle can't hurt, but I doubt it will end the search for the vigilantes they seek. They will figure out pretty quickly that Doyle is not big enough to pull all this off. Nor is he in the position to decapitate the organization with his 'No-Name' boys."

"Then," I said. "We'll have to give them more than just Doyle. And the solution just might play into our hands if we can make it happen. We can give them Craft and Pablino. That would kill two birds with one stone. That way we could take care of the western part of the organization on the cheap."

"How deep are you into Doyle?"

"Not deep enough, I'm afraid. I've just obtained the ability to track him, but nothing more, to date. We have to catch him with the goods, and at this point we don't even know what or where the goods are. And it's too early in the game to reveal to the feds that Doyle is in the game, let alone the target of an investigation. If we let them know too much too soon, we'll never get to him. They'll fuck it all up."

"For once I agree with you, Hannah. But something has to be done, and done quickly. I'll do my best to slow any investigation down from my office, but Russo's office can do more harm. They have a larger territory they will be covering and probably assigning more investigators. That shit's gonna have to be between you and Russo."

-------------------------------------------------------------

Winter, especially January, is a shitty time to visit Boston. But I guess Doyle was used to the cold weather, being a native New Englander. We would have to put Providence in our hip pocket for now, but we did not abandon our search for that warehouse.

There were way more top-tiered brothels in Boston than in the much smaller towns of Newport or Providence. Rhee's squad of itinerant stalkers followed Doyle to one of the larger houses, a place called Bejeweled of Boston. Bejeweled was an old first-class hotel turned brothel in the late 2030s during the Whorehouse Movement; a time when legal brothels cropped up everywhere. It was just south of Boston Common and the Public Garden. It was said that it was the best house in New England, and the biggest. Men and even some women would come from far and wide to visit the magnificent creatures who worked the rooms and serviced the richest, most powerful of them.

Unfortunately, when he was approached by one of Rhee's agents, an auburn beauty with quite the figure, he rejected her outright and surfed the bar for someone not so eager to get close to him. That was a bad move on our part, almost an act of desperation by the gal. But Doyle thought nothing of it and just rejected her offhand and moved on to a striking young blonde, with long hair and big tits. Poor thing. She had no idea what she was getting into.

However, one of Clunky's lieutenants was drawn to the redhead and took her up on her offer. Regrettably, she was not on Bejeweled's roster of employees and was summarily escorted out of the place. Fortunately, the young man really liked her look and followed her out of the first-tier brothel, where they walked down the street to a first-class hotel where she pumped him and dumped him. That is, she pumped him for information, fucked his brains out and left him to go about his business. He never thought twice about the transaction.

Rhee's agent, a gal named Fancy Gibbons, seduced the man in his forties named Jackson Quirk, and managed to find out that Doyle and a handful of his top men would be in Boston for the balance of the week. His boss would be staying at Bejeweled for most of that. He bragged about being Doyle's favorite, and that he was in the shipping business, and that they would be attending to some of that this week.

Fancy did a quick evaluation of her subject and determined that he probably wore the leather coat he had with him all the time, so she tagged it with a listening/tracking device with the hope that Quirk truly spent most of his time following Doyle around. Not wanting to lose a great source so quickly, Fancy told him he was a great lover and said that she would love to see him again. She gave him a pink business card with the name Fancy on it with only a toll-free number. "First one's free, lover. Whenever you are in my town, come and see me. Just call and I will be there."

"Well, Fancy, we'll be around all week," Quirk said. "I think I'd like to get together before we have to go up to Providence." Bingo. Chalk one up for Fancy. Now if only Quirk goes with Doyle, and the signals from their trackers match up, we will be heading to Providence and finding out where the girls are being kept. At least, that is what we hoped.

---------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------

After Fancy's little tryst with Jackson Quirk, the man slunk back to Bejeweled of Boston to watch over his boss, who would be spending the night. Our operators working the house counted no less than six men stationed at the brothel watching over Doyle. Two on his door, two watching the floor and two down on the main floor watching the bar and restaurant for those they deemed to be suspicious characters.

Rhee's operators, a dozen in all, came and went, and, in time, were replaced by others just to stem any suspicions of Doyle's guardians. While Doyle abused the poor blonde with the big tits, Rhee's people would be observing his people to gain any advantage they could while we determined what his next move was.

To our good fortune, Quirk was indeed a close associate of Doyle's, and every conversation they had brought us closer to the next move. And it was the day after Quirk's tryst with Fancy Gibbons while he and Doyle had breakfast, that we learned Doyle would be visiting the Green Flag Shipping Company, and his brother Connor.

It was during a meeting at the shipping company that Doyle revealed that he would be sending the girls in Providence west, so that they could be shipped to the Orient. It was also revealed that although operations on the East Coast were broken, activity in the west had not slowed down one bit. In fact, Miguel Pablino's operation was doing better than ever, being unaffected by the vigilante raids in the east.

During the discussion in the back room of the shipping company, we discovered that a shipping container filled with girls would be trucked from Providence to Long Beach, California, for further shipment to a port in Japan. From there, the girls would be distributed into the sex trade throughout Asia. Brothels and private owners of sex slaves paid top dollar for these black, white and Latina ladies whose lives would be sacrificed to the almighty dollar.

According to those in the meeting in the backroom of Green Flag Shipping Company, it would take four days to ship these trafficked girls to the west coast. Their journey would not be an easy one, and chances are some may not survive. I had to make some decisions, and I had to make them fast. Doyle and a select few of his operators would be heading up to Providence to take inventory, and then they would be packed into a shipping container and sent west.

Wanting more counsel before making a decision on how to work on the intelligence we had gathered, I called a meeting of my A-team at the Greenhouse in order to make the best possible decision regarding how to act on it.

--------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------

Always impulsive, it was Hoagie who spoke up first, after learning the details of Doyle's plan.

"Catch them on the road, shoot the driver and shoot the guards. Set the girls free then and there and that's when we call the feds."

"Worst plan ever," I said. "How about Doyle? How about Pablino? If we don't somehow get one or both, this mission is a failure. We've got enough audio of Doyle and his brother and the rest plotting and planning this. That should be enough for the feds to make the association and lock the son of a bitch up. But we have to do everything in our power to make the association solid. If we get the girls at the Providence facility, whatever it is, and it's associated with Doyle or Green Flag, we hand him and his boys over to the F.B.I. and wash our hands of the entire deal. If the feds are doing the heavy lifting, maybe they can eliminate the 'vigilantes' as part of the equation. Just write it off to another anonymous tipster."

"Hannah," Avi asked. "Do you have any federal connections in New England? Getting Russo involved again could prove to be a problem. It's so out of her territory, and the F.B.I. is gonna want to know her source. They've been pretty lax in that regard with her so far, but that will change if you want to make a raid up there."

"As usual, Avi, you are being clear-headed and you are right. Maybe Davante can hook us up with the name of a connection up in the northeast who could do this without fucking it up. If we want to affect things on the west coast, maybe we should do that later and with specificity. I don't see a way we can do both at once. Duane?"

"I agree with you, Hannah. Let's clear the table in our neck of the woods before we go off trying to save the world. Cutting the west coast off from this shipment will do damage enough to Pablino and his people. However, if there is a dialogue between Doyle and Pablino that we can become a party to, we should garner as much data from that relationship as possible. For future purposes, of course."

"Fine," I said. "But as soon as Doyle's inspection date is confirmed, we should inform whoever our contract is at the F.B.I. and see if we can get them to raid the place then. That is, if Doyle goes to inspect the merchandise. If not, the association will not be as firm."

"Where do we come in?" Herman asked. "I'm not so comfortable working up in New England in the middle of winter with this little intel."

"It's wise that you are being cautious, which is why I want to lay this on the feds' door. Let them have all the credit and all the action."

"But what of us? What is our role in this mission?" Archer asked.

"I do want to send a couple people up there to observe, once we determine the location of the girls. But to take no other action other than to inform me so that I may communicate the intel to the feds at the appropriate time. So who wants to go up to Boston later today to babysit Doyle's assets, along with Rhee's people?"

Ronnie and Caroline volunteered to go as a couple, but I shot that down. A mixed-race couple would get nowhere near Doyle and his gang if, indeed I needed that to happen. So, I chose Anthony and Juicy, who were getting closer by the day. Anthony because he is a savvy traveler and Juicy because of her quick wit and toughness. Rhee's people would be, as they have been, taking the lead on the observation of Doyle and his people, but my pair of operatives would be there to keep me in the loop.

------------------------------------------------------

"You know, Hannah," Holly said. "I've been auditing your new women's hospital, and it seems you've got a fine staff, thin as it is. It appears you need more beef on the bone. Finding girls to save is easy. Finding someone to care for them is not. Not even in these times. Much of that special person is required in the way of empathy and compassion. Much of our lower-level staff is non-English speaking, and it takes very special supervisors to ensure that everyone's needs are being met."

"You're right, Hol. I never expected it to be this hard. What with all the unemployment out there I thought we'd have tons of qualified applicants, but that is not the case. For every one we hire we turn down another twenty."

"All that being said, it takes money to hire the best people and this is not a moneymaking proposition here, so we're gonna need a few more of your and Gloria's Uber-wealthy friends to take pity on us and throw some dollars our way. You are certainly not in the hole at this point, but I can foresee that point where the train comes around the tracks as you try to feed the beast. It's that big turn that gets to me. The timing has to be just right going around the bend in the road. Go out and fund raise. I'll see if I can help William to attract more competent staff."

With Holly at her desk and me at mine, I decided that I would call William first. Just to see how things were going at the hospital.

"Hannah," William said. "So wonderful to hear from you. It's been a while and I guess we've both been so busy. How can I help you today?"

"I was just talking to Holly and we were concerned about how things are going. I know you haven't had that much time to really create a solid foundation at the hospital, but I wanted to inquire about what you need right now."

"Mostly people, Han. The money seems to be there for now, and there appears to be enough in the hopper to keep things running smoothly for the better part of a year. We're just starting to get National Healthcare benefits coming in for our existing patients who qualify, and that is and will continue to help. I need at least a handful of good therapists and a shit ton of gals who can help without sending my patients over the edge."

"How are you dealing with the shortage of therapists?"

"We're doing a lot of group work and shorter sessions with each gal. We've been doing plenty of interviews, but most are underqualified or just playing out of their league. If I could draw from a wider spectrum, maybe that could help. Local talent is drying up and the ones willing to travel have no place to stay. If only..."

"William, do you have room at the hospital to house these women? If we could create a space for new employees to live there it would reduce our cash outlay for each new employee. But we need a place to keep them."

"We have not converted the operating suites yet. Maybe we can turn that space into apartments for employees and draw new therapists that way. Lower pay, but greater benefits could be a solution."

"Call the architect and see what they could do about making this work for us. It could also work in our favor having staff living in-house in the event of a meltdown. Let me know if you need any extra funds and Gloria and I will test the generosity of some of our wealthier friends. I'll also tap the crew at Todd Acquisitions to see what kind of cash they are bringing in."
