"Apologise," Anna demanded.

Despite the choice she'd offered the Seat of Death earlier, she didn't actually make Esmerelda leave or join the little late-night / early-morning orgy we had been participating in. Which, despite the fact that Esmerelda was just as out-of-time beautiful as Anna was, was likely a good thing. Also despite Lauren and Lindsey having been putting on a bit of a campaign to surreptitiously convince the Death mage to give me (and them) a try in bed.

Esmerelda had sputtered, just a little, as she came back to her senses once she'd realised what she was seeing, and then stormed right back out of the bedroom the way she'd come. "I'll, ah, wait out here," she'd called over her shoulder as she'd pulled the bedroom door shut behind her.

Unfortunately for my pending orgasm, that called a halt to the activities. Helka, the 'Swedish Bikini Team' blonde secretary and now play partner of Anna, had been thrown off the most by the interruption - I'd made a very good impression on her, but asecondSeat getting into the mix was a bit much. Anna also sighed heavily and gave me a knowing look even while my cock was deep inside her. One did not keep a Seat waiting, even for another Seat.

The four of us had gotten ourselves nominally put together. Helka, after some whispered directions from Anna, gave me and Lauren a kiss goodbye and then exited through a hidden back way out of the bedroom. Anna went to her closet while Lauren and I got our clothes back on, coming out wearing a silky dressing gown in reds and blacks that trailed down to the floor and dragged in a little train behind her. It was cinched tightly at the waist and covered everything, but the top was doing a pretty good impression of a ball gown designed to show off her well-endowed goods. Her black, silky hair was already loose and wavy, looking only slightly 'just fucked,' and she went to Lauren and helped her by brushing some fingers through my girlfriend's wavy blonde hair to get it to the same state.

Now we were sitting at Anna's kitchen table, next to a wall made of windows looking out over Helsinki with the sun glaring at us accusingly as it climbed up into the sky. Esmerelda had been sitting impatiently at one end of the table when we came out, and Anna had gestured for me to take the other end in deferment to my title.

Then she'd sat right in the middle, wordlessly guiding Lauren to sit beside her.

And then she made her demand.

"Anna," Esmerelda scoffed, finally turning from looking out the window to acknowledge any of us. Her face had gone from her earlier surprise to an emotionless stone - which was kind of weird since I was so used to her beingoddlyemotional, swinging between them so much in private that I wondered if she had some sort of 'lived so long with bi-polar the poles started reproducing and were now quad-polar.'

"Esmerelda," Anna said evenly. Not accusingly, not even really a demand, but pointed. Like an experienced nanny calling a little kid out on something they knew they did wrong. Slight... disappointment.

The Seat of Death clenched her jaw and looked away out the window again for another moment, before turning back to Anna again. "I'm sorry that I showed up without warning and interrupted your morning," she said.

"And?"

Esmerelda huffed slightly, and I wondered what the hell kind of history there was between the two women. The Death Seat with the bad pink dye job was the next-youngest Seat to me, still several hundred years old, while Yaroslav and Anna were around a thousand years old or so based on what I'd figured out so far. Esmerelda had told me about Ayoub, who had been second-youngest when she ascended, and Temujin being Genghis Khan meant he'd ascended sometime in the 1100s. I wasn't sure about how old a few of the others were, but a connection between Anna and Esmerelda felt like they were stretching across a generation.

Especially prior to the modern era when communication and travel were much harder for everyone other than Seats, who'd had the magic to accomplish those things before anyone else.

"I'm sorry for interrupting what was clearly a personal interaction," Esmerelda said, more to the room than to anyone in particular.

"Ezzie," Lauren said, trying on the same tone of voice that Anna had and getting about two-thirds of the way there. My girlfriend didn't have the gravitas of a thousand years of life behind her yet.

That missing third got Esmerelda to look over with a scowl and a roll of her eyes. "Don't start with me," she said.

"Too late," Lauren said, pushing on. "I thought we were friends."

"We are... acquaintances," Esmerelda said, and I noted a near-glance in Anna's direction.

So they have a history and are close enough that she can barge into Anna's bedroom, but she still doesn't want Anna to know everything. And that includes our alliance,I thought.

Lauren, however, didn't have those qualms. "Bitch, please," she said, almost making me choke on my own spit, and I noticed Anna's eyes go wide as she almost burst out laughing. "Can we drop the mystery act?"

For a moment I dipped my consciousness into the pool of power in the back of my mind because those shifting emotions of Esmerelda's flashed onto her face in the spark of a snarl. I couldn't fight her - not successfully. At best I would be able to save Lauren's life and get her out of there, then die painfully. The power differential was too big - I hadn't seen her reserves like I had with Ndia, but Esmerelda's power was respected by the other seats for a reason despite being relatively 'young.' She'd been powered up by the death of an entire civilization at the start of her magical career. I couldn't hope to compete without impregnating every woman in North America, andthatwasn't realistic or desirable for a lot of reasons.

But Esmerelda's sneer was a flash, and turned into a smirk, and then a mild pout with a playful glare. "You make it very difficult to be mad at you, Lauren."

"That's because I'm so cute," Lauren smirked right back. "Now apologise for ruining Jerry's orgasm."

Esmerelda's pout dropped. "Thatisn't happening," she said. Then she finally looked at me. "I will apologise for barging in on you. I didn't realise you were as... close with Anna as this. What is it I heard the kids saying these days? 'My bad?'¿En qué se está convirtiendo el lenguaje?"

"Look, it's... fine," I said, finally joining the conversation. "You didn't know we were here. It's awkward, but I don't blame you. A simple accident, no harm done."

"Except for your blue balls," Lauren murmured and then snorted softly when all three of us glanced at her with a little glare to let it go.

"Well, you're here now,Ezzie," Anna said. "What is it you needed so quickly you couldn't even knock?"

"Please don't," Esmerelda groaned and winced at Anna's predatory smile. The nickname was likely going to stick. The Death Seat sighed. "I need access to your library. Please. You should have a copy ofÜlkenin Gizemleriwith Ayoub's annotations, and I think those will help me with a-" she glanced my way briefly. "Research project."

I had no clue what the book she mentioned was, or what the title meant in whatever language it was, but either it was about the Stone Sword and she didn't want Anna to know, or it was a project she didn't wantmeto know about.

"I see," Anna said. "Research. That still doesn't answer what makes this research such a rush that you barged in."

Esmeralda sighed again, one side of her jaw clenching several times before she forced a smile. "I'm worried that someone is going to discoverwhatI'm researching and move to block me," she said. "I've already been hitting a wall finding what I need in some of the usual places, and while I know you and Yaro wouldn't... intentionally block me, I wouldn't be surprised if certain people managed to do so anyways."

Anna took a deep breath, obviously looking for the right words for whatever she wanted to say next, but I cut in. "OK, hold on - what are 'the usual places?' Are you two about to tell me there's a public access Magic library or something that folks have been keeping from me?"

Both women snorted softly and shook their heads. "No, Jeremiah," Anna said. "There is no 'public library for Magic.'"

"We all have our connections," Esmerelda added. "And we don't like to share."

"Jesus," Lauren groaned, rolling her eyes. "Didn't anyone teachanyoneto share before, like, the 1950s?"

"No, they didn't," Anna smirked.

"My father taught me to be very careful with my wealth," Esmerelda said, her face becoming still for a moment. "And he still does to this day. Andinformation, Jeremiah, is our wealth." Her father, I'd learned at the council meeting, was her Prime like Lauren was mine - except instead of a life partner he was a dead one and manifested as a ghost around his 500 year old skull.

I cleared my throat and waved them off. "Right, never mind me, then. Just a guy trying to find his way in the world."

"So you think someone is working against you, Esmerelda?" Anna pivoted the conversation back on topic.

Esmerelda grimaced and this time the emotion stuck. "Yes, though it might not be on purpose. That's why I want to movequicklynow that I suspect it. You and Yaro never gave me a straight answer about what happened to Ayoub's collection, but Iknowhe handed over several of his more esoteric philosophies to Yaro to see if they interested him. And I know Yaro never bothered reading them and handed them toyoufor safekeeping."

Anna let out a breath slowly, pursing her lips slightly as she looked at the Seat. "There's nothing in my library from Ayoub that you haven't read before, Esmerelda. You know I made sure they were all open to you following his death."

"Hismurder," Esmerelda growled.

The Life Prime held up a hand in a calming gesture, her face softening empathetically. "I cannot say one way or the other, my dear, whether Ayoub was murdered. I knowyoubelieve it, and I don't discount that."

Esmerelda let out a long, low groan, turning to look out the window again before sucking in a breath through her nose and letting it out. She looked back, this time at all three of us. "The thing I'm researching, and I'm not trying to offend you here Anna but it's better if you don't know, is... frustratingly fringe. 'Esoteric' in the extreme.Alienígena.And not in the 'worship the Old Ones' culty way. Ayoub-"

"Time out," I said, my eyes going a little wide as I made the classic T-shape with my hands even though I was sure neither of the women had grown up playing a sport to havethatparticular hand sign in their repertoire. Context clues would have to do. "'Worship the Old Ones' cults? Please fucking tell me we're not talking about C'thulu shit here?"

"No," Anna said, giving me a lopsided smile and shaking her head. "The works of the author Lovecraft are not based on reality. There will be no monsters of unbelievable size causing widespread madness as they descend from the sky to devour the world."

"Well, that'snice to know I guess," Lauren said.

"The 'Old Ones' are an ancestor religion that crops up every few centuries," Esmerelda said. "No matter how many times a Seat or the general population kills it off. They believe we came from the stars and will return to the stars when enough of humanity has been 'purified.' The interpretation of that last part varies, but usually includes a lot of 'kill everyone we don't like.'"

"The troubling part is the fact that it keeps surfacing, and the claims that their high priests - who usually wield magic - didn't start out as Ascended," Anna finished.

"Oh, yeah, that'sthe troubling part," I mumbled, a little more focused on the 'murder cult' parts of the whole thing. "Alright, well, the more we know. Please, go ahead."

"As I was saying," Esmerelda got back on track. "Ayoub was the only person I'm aware of who might have been studying something close to what I'm dealing with."

"I don't have it," Anna said, looking a little frustrated at needing to give that answer. "Iamsorry, Esmerelda. Yaroslav did not inherit Ayoub's research or his library, and if I knew who did I would tell you - honestly, part of me wondered ifyouhad, and you've been hiding that fact all these years."

Esmerelda gave the other woman a curt nod, clearly troubled, and stood up abruptly. "I should go then so that you three can... continue."

"I was only half-joking when I said you should join us," Anna said, her voice warm and almost motherly again. "You could use some human connection."

Esmereldablushedand shook her head. "I'm not looking for advice right now, Anna." Then she looked at me without saying anything, and I knew that this whole talk had definitely been about our thing - the Stone Sword was evading her attempts to research its origin or what it did. Which didn't bode well for me getting it back for Leandro any time soon.

Then she cleared her throat. "Have... fun," she said, her frustration melting into an almost playful, cunning gleam in her eye.

Then she did that thing where she horrifically came apart, layer by layer. Her clothes went first, giving one very brief glimpse at her stunning nude body right before her skin sloughed off to expose her muscles and bones and she went to pieces.

"Why the fuck does shedothat?" Lauren asked, recovering from almost gagging as Esmerelda's organs flopped wetly against the kitchen table before sliding to the floor.

"Lauren, my dear," Anna said, sighing and wrapping her arm around her fellow Prime. "Because she can. That's usually going to be the answer when you ask a question like that about a Seat. Don't get me started on the silly, annoying shit that amuses Yaro."

"I feel like I don't have any of those little quirks," I defended myself.

"You don't," Lauren assured me.

"Yet," Anna smirked softly. Then she let out her breath and shook her head. "Unfortunately, you two, I need to get on with my day even if wewereso rudely interrupted. You'll need to come back again another time."

I groaned but nodded, stretching before starting to stand.

"Come on, Anna," Lauren tried, standing as well and stepping behind the older woman to hug her. My girlfriend slid her hands under the top of Anna's robe and palmed both of her sizable breasts, rubbing the other woman's nipples. "You know you waaaanna."

Anna snorted and pulled Lauren into a soft kiss, then looked into her eyes. "I do, but I'll live," she said. "You can fuck in my bed while I get ready for the day though. I'll appreciate the company."

The look Lauren gave me told me everything I needed to know - she wanted to put on a show.

*****-----*****-----*****

"Shut up," I said, holding up a finger at Benji before he could talk. I was sitting in front of my locker, furiously bullshitting my way through the end of my Ancient History essay.

As I had been abruptly reminded yesterday, I was being reminded again today - sometimes I could be a forgetful fucking idiot. I'd beenso closeto finishing it, totally forgotten, and now I had to rush to get it done for first period.

"What are you doing?" Benji asked.

"Shush," I said, typing furiously. Then backspacing because I'd messed up. I had to wrap up the essay with something punchy. Pulman had done a whole lecture on how to 'write a proper essay' and it had been half the same as every other class that was trying to teach us to write essays, and had half been about beingpunchy. The intro had to bepunchyto hook the reader. Each point had to bepunchyand then you explained it. And the conclusion had to bepunchyto leave a lasting impression on the reader so they would remember it.

By the end of that class, I wasn't sure if I'd been learning about essays or being a boxer.

The problem was that I knew I could write some good bullshit, but I'd only gotten about four hours of sleep and I'd woken up feeling a keen awareness about something I'd let slide the night before.

My magical power levels had, once again, been left wanting in terms of feeling safe. Esmerelda hadn't, and I wasmostlysure wouldn't, attack me and Lauren. But there had been aslimchance she could have exploded, pissed off at Lauren's remarks, and I wouldn't have been able to stop it. The sex last night had helped, but I wasbehind. Again. Everything with Leandro, the rocket, and Tuba City had brought me lower again.

That meant I didn't really want to tap my magic to help refresh me or use it on anythingmundanethat I could just as well handle myself.

Benji sat down beside me, looking at my screen for a moment, then sighed.

I kept typing, trying out some different wording.

He sighed again.

I paused my typing, thinking, and he cleared his throat.

"What?" I asked.

"Did you, uh, give any thought to the whole, uh, Get Taller thing?"

I clenched my jaw so hard I almost felt like it was going to crack.

"Is that a... no? Yes?" he asked.

I rewrote the last sentence, mumbled, "Fuck it," and saved it. Then I emailed it over to Pulman and shut my laptop.
