Chapter 005

Jason stormed off, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. He stalked down the dimly lit hallway bumping his thigh into a waist high air purifier. His thoughts were in total chaos as he walked, each step he took more unsure than the last. He hated that Linda seemed perfectly fine, that Mia was joking about his situation. He had always prided himself as a guy with absolute control over his emotions, but deep down he knew the truth. He didn't master his emotions; he just kept them bottled up until they exploded.

Turning the door knob, Jason pushed into his new room. He headed straight to the bed ready to collapse, when a lit screen caught his eye. Turning towards the source, he saw the top tier computer set sitting on the table just across the bed.

"Let's see what's on there." He muttered to himself before sitting.

"Basic things to know about magic", he typed into the search bar. The screen displayed a variety of topics, ranging from basic tier system to an article on the names, origins, and attributes of all known creatures. Mythical and otherwise.

"She wasn't kidding", he scoffed. "This thing really has a lot of info on magic. I wonder if google also had some legit info hidden deep in." He pondered.

Clicking on the creature database he scrolled through the list of creatures, some he knows and have seen, most he has heard of, and a whole lot he has a hard time believing exist. Like the gryphons and behemoths even big foots and some mythical creatures were listed with images.

A particular creature caught his eye, one that starred in the majority of his childhood adventure fantasies. But unlike the romanticized description uncle grey fed him with growing up, they seemed to be wildly feared and respected.

Growing up he was made to believe they were the fantastical equivalent of angels without wings, working in tandem with God himself to keep decorum amongst humanity. Due to their status they have almost never been seen by mortals and coming in contact with one can mean extreme good luck or bad luck.

If one comes in contact with a lyde, it would mean a god has taken an interest in such a person and he or she is now an avatar of the god in question which means immense power in exchange for servitude. Not that mortals care, we are all under servitude one way or another.

And also, in accordance to the story told by the old man, lydes are enforcers of justice. Immune to the effects of mortal magic and almost completely resistant to divinity, while also equipped with colossal physical strength and mental fortitude.

They are tasked with wiping out those who would dare to tamper with the fabric of existence or simply take them in for judgement. The old man told him various tales involving lydes at his own request, and he hoped that someday, he would become powerful enough to meet one and maybe even become Zeus avatar. Also had a thing for lightning and speed.

Although now that is completely out of the question, what with him being a baby god and all.

Jason proceeded to dig further in the archive and with no little amount of grumbling resigned himself to learn about his kind. * * *

"Uhm Mia? Mehn, it seems I'm lost. Oh, here we are." Linda muttered finally making her way to the blue room.

"Mia, the spell Grey put on akua has expired. What are you doing?" she asked looking at Jason's image and hers displayed on the holographic screen.

"Getting you and your brother a fake admission into a reputed college with full scholarship to sweeten the deal." Mia replied laser focused on her task.

"What! Why?"

"Well, that's the only idea I have, you've got a better one?"

"I don't get you."

Sighing Mia replied. "We both know you most certainly can't go home. Right?"

"No, we don't, why is that?"

"In your case you're a tier 4 witch with devastating disastrous tendencies, which if not mastered can and will cause harm to mortals around you. In your brother's case I don't know much about him. But what I do know is no mortal exposed continuously to his aura can live up to a year." Mia explained

"I don't feel anything from him." Linda shrugged

"You are a witch with high fortitude of course you don't. At least for now."

"So, going to a university will help us learn to control it? I still don't get you."

"You're not going anywhere. The letters are to give your parents a reason for your potential absence from home."

"Can't we just tell them about our identities."

"No." Mia deadpanned without offering any explanation.

"I've got to talk to Jason then. Hear what he thinks about this. In the meantime, the spell. She needs to use the toilet."

Rummaging through a drawer she replied "There's a toilet two doors left from the one opposite your room. As for this case, it really doesn't matter what you think. But I'll let you give it some thought." Handing Akua a bracelet indicating she put it on.

Gesturing towards the observing princess Linda replied with a scoff. "Yeah well, good luck forcing Jason."

After showing Akua to the toilet and explaining amidst the clear fascination and awe how to use the toilet, Linda headed towards her brother's room.

Knocking rhythmically, she waited for a few seconds for any sort of movement from the other side. Giving him time to spare both parties unnecessary embarrassment.

Having gone through this particular scenario a couple times, Linda knew well enough he wouldn't be opening this door for her. So, if she wants to speak with him, she has to let herself in.

Linda opened the door and poked her head in first while calling his name just to be sure.

"Jason? Oh! I assumed you'd be trying to sleep if not sleeping already. What are you doing?" She asked

"Linds I'm fine I don't need a pep talk." He replied with a grunt

"Who says I'm here for one? Can't I just... I don't know check up on you?"

"I hear you. But like I said I'm fine."

"Ooh lydes, figures they'll be the first thing you'll search for. Are they what you imagined." Linda teased, trying to change the subject.

"I didn't search for this and no they aren't all rainbows and lollipops like Grey painted them to be. They are as feared among magical netizens as policemen are feared by black dudes."

"Oh really. isn't that comment a bit racist." She teased.

"What, no it's just a statement. You're teasing me aren't you."

Laughing Linda nodded. "You should have seen your face."

After her laughter subsided, the room fell into comfortable silence, both siblings reading the displayed article on griffons together.

"Griffons live in the Ural Mountains; I thought they lived in the Riphaean mountains." Jason said breaking the silence

"How do you even know things like that." Linda asked

"Don't know. I just do." He replied, the room falling silent once more.

"Linda."

"Yeah."

"How are you fine with all this magic stuff. I mean I know with all we've seen the panther girl, and uncle Grey's feats I can't deny magic exists, but you seem too accepting with everything." Jason asked eyes locked on the screen.

Smiling to herself Linda replied. "I'm not okay with everything, but I mean I'm a potentially powerful witch with inexperience as my only downside; I don't see why I should be bothered."

"I'm serious Linds."

"Sorry, sorry I couldn't pass up the chance to tease you."

"Haven't you been doing that since you came in."

"That I have, I just don't see why you're so bothered by this."

"What do you mean, did you miss the part about my existence being a mistake. Who wants to be told that?"

"No, I did not forget, but I'm not supposed to exist either remember? No magical ancestry and all that." Linda retorted

"Well, that's true, but there's no downside to your existence."

"You do...make a good point there. Look Jason, you've always gone on and on about how people who allow emotions cloud their judgment when making life changing decisions are fools, and all that. And considering all counts, this situation is a life altering one."

"Really? do I have a choice in this matter? She said I'm going to be on the run from gods and mortal alike for the rest of my apparently immortal life."

"No, she said mortals and gods will come after you." Linda corrected.

"Well, what's the difference."

"The difference is that although they will come after you, you have the choice to take charge of your own fate, either run for life, or stand your ground and fight."

"Fight? Against gods. Yeah right." Jason scoffed. "Besides fighting forever is no better than running forever."

"Who says you're going to fight forever, once you fight the first set of beings that come after you, and win, others will see coming after you is not worth the pain it will cause. And who cares if they're gods, you're a potential god too remember?"

Seeing Jason ponder her words Linda continued.

"Also, from the look of things it seems you've been focused on the negative aspect of things. What about the positives? You get to get stronger and stronger until you become a god, a literal freaking god how cool is that. You can use all types of magic and you have a near infinite mana capacity, soon anyways. And that's just what I know, I'm pretty sure there's a lot more. I'm also your sister, if anyone comes after you, we would face them together. I mean it's not like I could leave you alone? Your problem is my problem. At least until I find a boyfriend."

Sighing Jason placed his head on the table. "I didn't think of it that way. I'm used to scoping out downsides first. I'll keep a more open mind next time."

"Fine by me, seeing you like this once every century though reassures me you not a robot disguised as my brother." Linda replied with a soft laugh.

"I'm still mad at Mia though, she treated the whole thing like a joke."

"Yeah, I don't know what her deal is." Linda agreed to her brother's surprise. She never needed more than a day with someone to figure out their deal. Not that she has ever had to deal with the complexities of magic.

Sighing he continued. "Thanks, Linds"

"You welcome bro."

"I can't wait to go back home away from all this insanity."

"About that...I think you're going to be a lot angrier at Mia."

Just then Mia's voice came through the intercom.

"*Linda, I need you down here asap.*"

"Coming" Linda yelled instinctively. "See ya later bro, nice chat by the way. See ya" with that she exited the room.

Jason reopened the closed tab on divine born with a more receptive mind, having hurriedly hidden the tab on Linda's earlier arrival. * * *

Akua sat by a holographic projection of what was most likely a compilation of basic knowledge necessary to live in the human world. Mia still sat by the console working on something Linda couldn't tell.

"You know you don't have to yell over the intercom, right?" Mia addressed Linda without turning around.

"Sorry. Old habits, you said you wanted to see me." Linda replied taking a seat in front of the huge command table right beside Mia.

"Yeah, that I did. Alright." Mia responded, finally turning from the control panel. "I just need your presence for a bit; I want to draft your training schedule."

"Really, training already? why the rush I mean we just got here." Linda retorted.

"Yeah well, the agency has been keeping tabs on the mana density and levels of every habited and non-habited region worldwide, they want to be able to take advantage of the next mana insurgence if there is ever one."

"Now your brother got his rather rude awakening in the same place the insurgence surged from all those years ago. Not exactly same place, just general area, but you catch my drift. Now he being what he is, that must have caused a major spike in the mana readings. So, if nothing at all, you both have to learn to completely mask your aura and mana. Understood?"

"Yeah sorta."

"Good enough. Get inside M.A.N.A let's check your pathways and control. Clara?"

* "RIGHT ON IT CAPTAIN. BEGINNING FOUR-DIMENSIONAL SCANNING, INITIATING FLOW TEST. INITIATING SPECTRAL DILUSION. PROCEDURE COMPLETED. ANALYSING STATISTICAL RESULT"".* Beep. Clara's monotonous voice responded.

"Uhn your stats are surprisingly ordinary thank goodness; I can't take anymore extraordinary. O-kay one second. Ahh there we go, so tomorrow morning I'm going to train you in recognizing mana. Ill simulate the feeling of mana in the wave chamber and then you try to replicate it. Then we can start working based on your stats." Mia stated.

"I'll pretend I understand that. What about Jason?"

"He'll have a completely different training from yours; he has a completely different aura and mana signature from anything I've dealt with. Maybe the old man will teach him I don't know yet." Mia said.

"That's probably a good idea considering how pissed he's gonna be soon." Linda thought to herself

"Speaking of aura's, you said and Akua mentioned earlier that Jason was emitting one, right?" Linda continued ignoring Linda's remark.

"Yeah, why?"

"And you said I'm not affected because of my high fortitude."

"Also true, get to the point."

"Then why aren't you affected since you're from a lower tier." Linda asked, having pondered the matter, she had been wondering that if Mia wasn't affected due to being in a low tier, then her parents shouldn't be either. She couldn't have been more wrong.

Mia looked a bit surprised and impressed at her question. "Quite the observant one aren't you. The old man once lived here for a while, and when he was stressed, he sometimes let his aura slip unconsciously. Note that he's a tier one creature, so his aura is a whole lot more powerful than Jason's. Getting caught in it frequently will mean death. So, I purchased tier one aura blocking artifacts and engraved the runes on my skin." Rolling up her sleeves to her shoulder she displayed the intricately drawn tattoo on her right upper hand.

"Wow, that's beautiful. Can't we..."

"No, you can't, this tattoo draws from the ambient mana and my mana to stay functional, and if someone without a mana pathway gets one, they'll get burned from the inside. So, no your parents can't use it."

"Fair enough." Linda responded jogging towards the princess.

The duo sat watching Akua's debriefing together, with Linda making small enlightening comments.

Mia got up and disappeared into the hallway, returning a couple minutes later with Eryndor on her tail. Mia called Jason through the intercom, and he too soon joined the group.

Akua turned to look at the group with curiosity. She had been wondering what was going to happen to her, maybe she would be sent away or if she would be forced to stay. Not that she minded staying, she didn't have any place in mind when she left her home realm, having never been to the human world. And besides, she trusted the guardian. Or at least her people did. Now that the whole resident have all gathered, she figured it was time.

"Is there a problem?" she asked sheepishly

"Nah you're cool." Mia waved her off. "We're here for the god boy." She stated to the princess's relief.

"Me? What about me."

"You need to begin your training today. It's a matter of utmost haste." Eryndor explained

"What? I never even agreed to this whole magic shit, so why should I have to train." Jason said his voice louder than he intended.

"I am aware of that son. And after this, you can quit if you're still not interested in training. This training is a must, not only for your safety, but for that of those around you." Grey continued calmly.

"What do you mean" Jason asked confused.

"Follow me. Mia?"

"Third door from the training room."

"And the blockers?"

"First top drawer by your right. You can't miss it. Even if you're this old." Mia added with a grin.

Eryndor looked at her with an amused look then motioned for Jason to follow him.

"Every being in the magical world emanates an aura, which can vary depending on the type of magic they wield." He began

"This is the training room." Grey noted.

"Yeah. Looks like it" Jason replied looking at the very obvious sign at the entrance.

"As I was saying, the higher one's tier, the more aura they exude. Now higher tier aura can be very dangerous if not outright deadly for people of lower tier. If that is the case, what do you think would be the effect on mortals."

"I don't know, they can't feel it?" Jason replied skeptically, raising an eyebrow. "Or they can die." He added.

"They die, if exposed for long periods or sometimes even just a minute is too long." He confirmed. "Here we are, this is the third door, right?"

"Yeah." He replied.

They arrived at their intended destination, and after a short rummaging, found the blockers which Grey handed to Jason.

They looked like a couple of wooden bangles with runes etched on individual beads. Grey chanted a short spell and all the etchings inverted themselves in a burst of white light.

"Those are aura blockers, commonly used by people in the lower tiers to protect themselves from the adverse and dangerous effects of higher tier aura" Grey began.

"Then why are you giving me one. I'm from the higher tiers, aren't I?" Jason asked in confusion.

Nodding, Grey continued "The spell I chanted earlier inverted the runes on the bangles as you saw. They now read 'with this ward I bind the well within, that no essence shall stir, nor light escape and so on. Whereas they once read, with this ward of power, I shield myself from the flames of the mighty and so on." Grey paused as if giving Jason time to assimilate what he just told him.

"Now put it on." He continued

Jason did as he was instructed, and the entirety of his world inverted. The instant the beads touched his wrist, he felt like he'd been taking the best piss of his life, his eyes closed in pure bliss and relief and someone suddenly clamped his pipe shut, like what the hell.

Every vein and nerve in his body screamed at the discomfort. He hadn't realized he was emanating any aura, he didn't even notice its presence before, but now he could definitely feel its absence. It wasn't overly uncomfortable but it wasn't pleasant either.

"I want you to memorize that feeling. Take note of the blocked gates in your mind. The points where you feel the pressure the most. Those are your floodgates." Grey explained and Jason nodded along, his brow furrowed in concentration and discomfort.

"You're going to be wearing that bangle for five minutes, and after that you take it off and try to replicate what you feel now. Block out your own aura. "He continued

Jason's brow furrowed harder, this time in confusion. "I don't understand. Why do I need to block out my own aura when you can make this. Why don't I just use the bangles instead." He asked

"There's no material in this world except dwarven metals, that can stop the flow of a higher being's aura for as long as thirty minutes. And dwarfs are extinct."

"Heh I don't know about that, this one seems to be holding up pretty well."
