Chapter 5 - The Kindness
She woke on the floor at 4:30 with the eviction notice stuck to her cheek.
Dark apartment. Cold shower. The same blouse and pencil skirt -- wrinkled now, greyish at the collar, three days running. No bra. No underwear. Red-rimmed eyes.
She didn't buy the coffee.
She stood outside the café at 5:50 and stared at the menu board through the glass. Eleven fifty. Her account was negative. She watched the barista wipe down the machine and she walked past, took the elevator to fourteen, sat on the floor beside his locked door, and waited with empty hands.
At 7:20, the elevator chimed.
Williams unlocked the office without looking at her. She followed, hands clasped, and stood in the centre of the room while he settled into his chair. He unpacked his briefcase. Reached for where the coffee should be.
His hand found empty desk.
"Where's my coffee?"
She opened her mouth. What came out wasn't an explanation.
It started as a shaky inhale that caught in her throat -- and then her face crumpled and the tears came. Not the controlled, stinging eyes she'd blinked back all week. Full-body crying that bent her forward, hands over her face, shoulders heaving.
"I'm sorry -- I don't have any money -- my rent, there's an eviction notice, my account is negative, I've been spending everything on coffees and lunches and clothes and I can't afford the bra or the underwear or the five outfits and I'm going to lose my apartment--"
The words tumbled out breathless and broken, punctuated by sobs. Five days of swallowed fear cracked open at once, standing in his office in wrinkled clothes with nothing underneath, crying like a child who'd lost something.
Stop it. Stop crying. He doesn't need this. He's a busy man and you're standing in his office falling apart like a child.
He let her. Fifteen seconds of watching. Those grey eyes unreadable.
Then he stood. Came around the desk. Took her gently by the shoulders and guided her into the leather chair. "Sit down. Breathe."
She sat. She breathed. He poured water from the credenza and placed it in her shaking hands. When the breathing steadied, he leaned against the desk, arms folded, and spoke.
-
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Soft. Almost hurt. As though her silence had wounded him.
"I didn't want you to think I couldn't handle it--"
"Chloe. I'm your employer. If you're struggling, I need to know." A pause. "The clothes, the coffees -- you've been paying for those yourself? All of it?"
She nodded.
"And you didn't say anything." He shook his head -- not anger. Something that looked like regret. "I should have asked. That's on me. But you should have spoken up. We could have avoided all of this."
We could have avoided all of this.
The words rearranged the week. She'd suffered because she hadn't communicated. He would have helped. The cruelty was him pushing her to be better. The suffering was hers.
He would have helped me on Monday. Day one. And I was too proud -- too stupid -- to open my mouth. All those days of struggling, all those nights, and it was my own fault. Every bit of it.
"Tell me about the eviction."
She told him everything. The notice. The fourteen days. The negative balance. The parents in Ohio she couldn't call. He listened without interrupting, his expression grave and kind, and when she finished he was quiet for a moment.
"The rent. Don't worry about it." He didn't elaborate. "The contract -- Monday. Everything official. Salary, proper terms." He moved to his chair. "The uniform, we'll get that sorted too. Focus on this weekend."
The relief was so sharp it made her nauseous. She pressed her hands to her face. Warm tears through her fingers.
"Thank you, Mr. Williams."
"Alexander." Something open in his expression. Almost gentle. "When we're not in a meeting, you can call me Alexander."
---
The rest of the day was unlike anything before.
No inspection. No comments about the wrinkled blouse or the bare skin beneath her skirt. He had her organize files at the desk, sitting in a chair, like a person. She drafted a letter and he read it and said, "This is good." Notadequate. Notbetter. Good.
He asked about Ohio. The flat fields, the summers, the feeling of being too big for a town that small. He listened like she was interesting. He told her about law school, a case that made his name, and he made it funny. She laughed. She hadn't laughed in days.
Lunch at Rosario's -- already paid for. The hostess said "all taken care of" and Chloe nearly buckled at the counter. He'd ordered her a real meal. Pasta. Bread. Tiramisu. They ate at his desk and the silence was comfortable for the first time.
Dinner at six. Also paid for. They ate across from each other and the office felt warmer, the overhead lights catching the amber in the scotch decanter. He asked about her favourite music and didn't mock it. Asked what she wanted long-term and listened to her halting answer like it mattered.
At seven, he reached for the decanter.
"I think we've earned this." He poured two glasses and slid one across.
She sipped. The burn hit the back of her throat like a lit match. She coughed -- hard, eyes watering, hand over her mouth.
He laughed. A real laugh, deep and sudden, lines creasing around his eyes. "Easy. It's not a race."
She tried again. The burn was still there, but underneath -- warmth. It spread through her chest and softened everything.
They sat with their scotch in the quiet office, the city dark beyond the windows, and for a moment it felt like something she'd never had. Safety. Or close enough that she couldn't tell the difference.
-
He slid a white envelope across the desk. "For the weekend. The uniform, the under-garmets, whatever you need. Consider it an advance."
Cash. More than she'd expected. Her eyes stung.
I don't deserve this. The thought was instant, reflexive, true. He'd spent all week teaching her basic things -- how to dress, how to stand, how to be presentable -- and she'd repaid him with wrinkled blouses and tears. And now he was handing her money.I have to be better. I have to earn this.
"I'll pay it back--"
"Monday. We'll figure it all out Monday."
He walked her to the door at half past seven. His hand on her shoulder -- the same squeeze from the interview, but it felt earned now. Warm. Safe.
"Enjoy your weekend, Chloe. Monday, fresh start."
---
The bus home was different. Same back row, but the window showed a different city -- lit up, alive. She held the envelope in her lap and pressed her fingers against the cash inside and didn't count it. Counting would have felt ungrateful.
He wasn't a bad man. He was demanding. Hard. But he'd listened. He'd helped. He'd poured her scotch and laughed at the way she coughed. Under the standards and the cold stares, he cared.
Monday. Contract. Fresh start.
---
Saturday morning.La Petite.Blush pink walls, soft lighting, racks of silk things she didn't know the names of. A bell chimed above the door. She was the only customer.
The sales assistant was immaculate -- thirties, put-together in a way that made Chloe feel like a child in the wrong room.
"I need a cupless bra."
The woman didn't blink. "Of course. What size?"
She was led to shelves of structured, architectural things that looked more like engineering than underwear. The assistant pulled options and guided her to a fitting room with a curtain that didn't quite close.
The mirror showed someone she didn't recognise.
Black, structured underwire that pushed her breasts up and together -- lifted, supported, shaped. But the cups ended below her nipples, leaving them completely exposed. She stared at herself. Her breasts looked larger this way, fuller, the pale flesh mounded above the rigid underwire, the pink nipples standing hard in the cool air. Presented. That was the word. Her tits were beingpresented, lifted and offered by the bra the way a shelf displays something for sale.
She picked three. Black, identical, functional.
Then the rest. Thongs -- mesh, the sales assistant called them "sheer panel" at the front, "minimal coverage" at the back. She held one up to the light. She could see through it. The front was transparent -- she'd be able to see every detail of herself through the fabric, the shadow of her pubic hair, the shape of her lips pressed against the sheer material. The back was a strip. A thread. It would disappear between her cheeks and leave everything else bare.
She tried one on. The mesh settled against her mound, and through the transparent panel she could see the dark triangle of her pubic hair, the crease of her lips where the thin fabric pressed between them, the outline of everything she had. The strip at the back disappeared into the cleft of her ass and she could feel it -- thin, tight, nestled between her cheeks, the sensation of being covered and exposed at the same time.
Stockings. Sheer, thigh-high, a seam up the back. Garter belt -- black, simple, the clips the assistant had to show her how to fasten.
She stood in the fitting room in all of it.
-
Cupless bra pushing her voluptuous breasts up, her nipples exposed above the underwire, the pale skin flushed. The mesh thong transparent at the front -- her pubic hair visible, the outline of her lips pressed against the fabric. The strip at the back a thread between her pillowy cheeks. Stockings clinging to her legs, garter clips taut against her outer thighs.
She looked like something from a magazine she'd have hidden under her mattress in Ohio. She looked like a woman she'd never met.
This is what professional women wear underneath. This is what they don't tell you in Ohio. She turned in the mirror. The exposed nipples, the sheer panel, the garter clips -- it felt extreme, but what did she know? She'd been wearing Walmart cotton a week ago. She'd been wrong about everything so far.He knows how women dress in this world. Trust him.
She bought it all. Three lingerie sets. Five outfits from the discount store down the street -- fitted dresses, skirt-and-blouse combinations, all mid-thigh, all with necklines that showed cleavage. Cheap lipstick, nail polish, mascara, foundation. The envelope covered it. He'd said five outfits, one for each day, and she wasn't going to give him a reason to be disappointed.
She watched a makeup tutorial on her phone and practised until her hands stopped shaking.
---
Sunday night. She laid it all out on her bed.
The cupless bra, the mesh thong, the stockings and garter belt, the heels -- all laid out in a row. Five outfits hung on the closet door. Makeup lined up on the bathroom counter.
She tried it on one final time. Black dress, fitted, ending mid-thigh. Underneath: the cupless bra lifting her breasts, the mesh thong, the stockings, the garter belt. Heels. Lipstick. Mascara. She looked professional, in the way he'd described professional. She looked like someone who belonged in a law firm.
She looked like someone she didn't know.
-
She set her alarm for 4:30.
Monday. Contract. Fresh start.
She had no idea what was coming.
