Seven years in an outpost is a long lonely thing, the years spent cooped up safe from the war have been suffocating for Elara, her royal guards under strict orders to keep her away from the war in an outpost far far east. Most days she spent sitting in her chambers reading any and all books she could get her hands on, the nights she spent sneaking out just to get some fresh air. She sighs its finally coming to an end, all of it, she finally gets to see her family again.
The war had been raging since she was 12, Kalk had always been in fragile negotiations with Thrmes, Kalk needs the trade during the harsh winters, their crops become frost bitten and brittle, and when Thrmes and Kalk could not agree on taxes the king of Kalk declared war on Thrmes. When Elara turned 18 King Rein made King Orin an offer, his daughters hand in marriage to end the war.
Orin agreed and when Rein lead his men to raven rock to meet the Princess Orin had a trap set and waiting for him, Orin never intended to give his daughter over to Rein, he wanted to trap him. That battle was bloody, the Prince who lead armed cavalry was injured by Rein, eventually leading to Rein slipping away and Thrmes falling back from the rocks.
The dawn is warm and gentle on her skin, Elara's yawns as she sits atop her mare, Fern, the dappled grey nag carries her with grace her royal caparison flowing holding the Thrmes crest, a royal blue shield and two crossed silver swords. They've been riding all night, with twenty royal guards keeping a tight circle around her. Both exhausted, Elara pats Ferns neck, the mare flicks one ear back at her rider. Surrounded by knights and guards on their own war horses they head north west, to the great northern fortress. its a day and a half north lies Kalk, the border is not marked by landmarks but notches in the trees that line the border.
The forest around Elara is warm alive, oak trees, low shrubbery, the path is well worn by horses passing up and down these trails to bring supplies, to smuggle spies it all feels so different, so refreshing compared to the outpost, but she cant shake the anxiety. The reason she is being lead here is because the out post is no longer the safe haven it once was, as they enter a clearing Elara gets a good look at the land ahead.
Thick forests on soft rolling hills of oak and maple and to the north, tall pines of blue needles and red wood on the foot hills of mountains of black stone and white snow. Mountains loom over her as the continue west to the fortress. The sun bright and warming her in her white and silver gown, with a blue and silver cloak.
They finally reach the fortress, the brown stone walls make her feel safe as they pass the gates. Exhausted she dismounts and is greeted by Varions best knight Thorin, he stands tall, fully armoured, his hand on the pommel of his sword.
"Princess, Orin and Varion wait for you inside, please, follow i will take you to them." His voice is deep gruff, like its sore from lack of use.
Elara follows, her posture perfect as the perfect princess she has been trained to be, seven years of scolding for every time she slouched, yawned, burped, stuttered, did not walk with grace, did not sit gently, and all those little must do's as a Princess. She walks, chin up with grace, she walks like she's floating, her dress a shimmering white and silver.
Orin looks up from the war table he is standing and viewing, the stoic kingly mask softens as he waves for everyone to leave, except Elara, and his son. Varion looks at Elara his stern face softening as he smiles, his tall muscular frame moves with sturdy and slow steps towards her.
"Elara?" Varion looks like he doesn't believe his eyes.
"You're early oh my princess look at you, you've grown so much!" Orin exclaims as he walks towards Elara his arms open and his eyes teary with faint sorrow.
Elara's entire act of the perfect princess fades as she breaks crying, the reunion is emotional and tearful with Orin pulling her into his chest and stroking her hair. Varion comes up behind his hand scared and callous slowly reaches for her shoulder.
"Orin, Varion." Elara's voice shakes with soft sobs as she holds onto Orin.
After some time she lifts her head looking at them both, they seem happy to have their Princess back. varion finally putting his hand not on her shoulder but her head as he pats her playfully rough.
"its nice to know you are still shorter." His voice teasing but his tone is soft.
"Only because of the riding boots you wear." She replies with no venom just teasing and softly chuckling as she wipes her tears.
Varion laughs, crossing his arms smirking and shaking his head. Orin looks at Elara with admiration, his hands on her upper arms holding her gentle but grounding. Looking at his daughter, her sweet blushed cheeks, she looks a little tired but that's to be expected, her neck soft and around it a pendant with the royal crest hanging from her neck like ownership. The king smiles as he takes his time, her dipped collar bone and then the U cut of her dress covering the swell of her breasts, her dress pinches into her waist showing just how wide her hips are bellow, he imagines the soft skin under the cloth, the way her belly will have that soft feminine pouch bellow her navel and lead into her slit. His eyes reach hers, he smiles his crows feet showing on his matured face. He's had many women over the years but this one, so close to him, so soft, such grace, now she's his to protect. He looks at Varion, Varion seems to notice, perhaps from seeing the same look in his eyes about the women they shared from raids on Kalk villages, spoils in this war, the King turns back to Elara.
"You must be exhausted, go bathe and rest. We can talk about you time travelling later." His voice is smooth as silk despite his age.
Elara shakes her head wanting to stay awake and speak to them, seven years, she needs at least a few minutes to talk before going away even for a shot while.
"Please, i have so much to tell you, I've missed you both so dearly." She says softly pleading.
"I suppose we can spare some time for our Princess, come we will speak somewhere more, comfortable." Orin says, his tone smooth as he leads her, a glance at his son to follow.
He leads them out the war room, through corridors and up stairs to his chambers, the kings chambers, a deliberate choice. Varion keeps his impassive smile, he knows that Orin wants Elara comfortable visiting his chambers, perhaps to make things easier later...
Inside the chambers there's benches near the walls, chests, a large fire place with two long benches facing towards the other and the fire, both draped with soft velvet. She sits on one side, Varion sits with his arms crossed but his shoulders relaxed, his eyes occasionally glancing over Elaras frame. Orin sits on the the same bench as Varion, but his posture is more relaxed his hands on his knees as he looks to his Princess.
"I've been told you acquired a horse during your time at the outpost." His voice teasing and knowing as he waits for her explanation.
"I did... she's a good horse a little stubborn but i trained her myself." Elara says ending on a proud note, while hoping they don't ask for more information.
"Ah, a so my little sister has been getting into trouble stealing a horse..." Varion chimes in smirking and tsk tsking at her.
"No, i found her, she was wild, it took two years of slowly befriending her, but i tamed her." Elara replies firmly but calm.
"Ah... So my daughter was sneaking out to feed wild horses..." Orin says as a statement rather than a question.
"That is dangerous Elara, but... I would be lying if i said i wasn't proud you managed to achieve such a thing. that horse will be useful, but i have a few well trained war horses for you to choose from that will be much more comfortable." Orin's tone goes from scolding to a proud satisfaction.
"Very dangerous..." Varion's tone is much harsher.
"You're one to talk, i remember you sneaking out nearly every night when you were my age." Elara snaps back her tone gentle but snippy
"W... Well... That....That's different..." Varion says as a flush creeps up his neck he looks away his face in a scowl, as Orin chuckles smiling.
"And no, i prefer to ride my horse, i trust her." Her voice softly pleading.
"Alright, but if it throws you... The offer is there." Orin's tone concerned but respectful.
"I heard you got injured, Varion?" Elara's voice soft and concerned, her eyes heavy and exhausted.
"Ah, yes, that bastard cornered me, had his men surround us... But its a brutal tale not for a lady." Varion replies dismissive.
"I'm not a child, its hard enough barely getting any information when i was in the outpost. please." Elara pleads.
Varion gives Orin a passing look and sighs, he straightens his posture.
"We had.... Set a trap for Rein, if we could kill the dog then they war would be won. But he had archers in the rocks flanking his arrival. At first it was going well, we cut off his only path back north and killed a few of those Kalk dogs." He smiles sombrely at the memory but his eyes stay on Elara gauging her reaction.
"We out numbered him 70 to 40. But, with the archers and his knights he managed to kill half the men i lead that day. Most of his men were fighting, but 10 of them circled me, i was surrounded. Then once Rein himself was satisfied covered in the blood of good loyal Thrmes men, he had his men hold the circle so he could try kill me himself." Varion grits his teeth his body tensing.
"It was a harsh fight, and he managed to knock me off my feet, only by sheer luck and the ice under my boots!" Varion growls he takes a breath and continues. "He had his men hold me down while they cut off my armour, I was disarmed and... He carved my chest, giving me this." Varion looks away with a sombre look as he unbuttons his gambeson and lifts his tunic to his neck, a large scar runs across is from his left shoulder going down to his ribs on his right. He pulls his tunic down as quick as he lifted it.
"Reinforcements arrived and an archer managed to shoot him in his shoulder between that black armour those kalk dogs wear. That arrow and the cavalry is the only reason i survived, Sir Runic lead that charge. Kalk fled back into the rocks to the north, and we fell back to the fort. Left a lot of good men to rot there, we couldn't go back to bury the dead, the wolves and bears got to the bodies by the time we could." His voice is sombre, his gaze low and his posture slouching slightly.
"It's been a brutal war, but you needn't worry, you are safe, here by our side." Orins voice is smooth as silk calming towards Elara.
"Lets... Talk of something else..." Elara says her voice is tired and anxious.
Orin stands and motions for Elara to come closer, she does the action barely thought about.
"Come that's enough talking, let me hold my Princess, we are safe no need for that anxiety my dear." Orins tone is gentle as he cups Elara's face, his other hand holding both her hands as he leads her slowly backwards towards the bed.
Varion stands and follows slowly, he leans against the bed his expression impassive.
"You have been riding all night, just rest ill be right here, we both will stay." Orin says watching Elara's expression for resistance or anxiety.
Elara just nods, her body heavy and exhausted as Orin innocently pulls her into the bed his weight makes it creak softly, he gently strokes her hair, her face buried into his chest as she lies on her side. Varion climbs in after them slowly shifting his weight and putting himself behind her, slowly he puts an arm around her waist and presses his nose into the back of her neck. Now with them both so close, she feels a strange sense of safety and comfort, something she has been craving for years in her isolation. slowly her breathing steadies and she falls asleep in their embrace.
She wakes later that day near sunset, under the warm blankets, her boots on the floor by the bed, unlaced and pulled off while she slept, her hair upbraided in her sleep and he cloak hanging over the bed head. Varion and Orin long gone, likely back to the war room going over ever changing information and border skirmishes.
Sitting up she stretches, looking around she sees her leather bags, her clothing and personal items are all neatly placed in the corner of the large room, next to the large maple changing screen, its colours match the wooden floors. She looks around the room taking it in more now that she's more awake, there's a large wooden dark oak door, the wall covered in panelling, the curtains are white lace with a secondary thick blue and silver curtain, the colours of Thrmes. The room feels so much larger now, the stone fire place empty and clean, the large bear pelt in the middle of the room looks small because of the sheer size of the chambers, and the bed is soft as lambs wool in a beautiful four post frame with curtains on each post for extra privacy.
Truly a kings chambers, the bed is soft she almost doesn't want to leave, stretching as she gets up she slowly combs her fingers through her long black hair as she approaches her things.
'Fern probably needs a brush and rest after that ride, i should check on her.' She thinks to herself looking out the window, the setting sun making the curtains glow.
She quickly undresses, slipping out of her gown, skirts, and corset. Looking over her clothes she pulls out a ridding skirt she made a long while ago, its a commoners clothes but under dresses it makes moving around and ridding more comfortable. Reaching in under her dresses she pulls out a soft spun tunic, putting it on instead of a corset, she does not want to wear a corset again after that long trip. She puts on a soft blue gown on top, she does up the lacing loosely so her skin can rest from the corset pinching her in her exhausted sleep.
A servant knocks and enters the room, her eyes down cast.
"Princess! Here let me help you my lady." Her voice sounds distressed to see the Princess behind the screen getting herself ready.
Elara smiles and nods as she sits on a near by bench the servant quickly grabs a comb from a draw and approaches the seated Princess, she starts to comb her hair, starting at the ends. Elara smiles eyes closed, its been a while since she's had help, it feels oddly nice to be cared for. the braiding nearly done the servant leans forward.
"Do you have a hair pin or such you wish for me to arrange?" She says looking at the floor as she speak, Elara notices her down cast eyes and thinks its odd...
"In the satchel there is silver ribbons." Elara replies her voice soft smooth and kind, she worries the servant is more nervous than her so she makes an effort to smile at her.
The servant nods and quickly fetches the ribbons, she re braids the ends and ties it with the ribbons. The servant steps away and keeps her eyes down cast now done. Elara looks over at her, and stands slowly and looks at the mirror she smiles warmly at the servant.
"Thank you, it looks wonderful." Elaras voice is cheerful, she watches and sees the servant give a quick smile and bow.
"Will that be all my lady?" The servant asks, her hands clasped in front of her.
"Yes, thank you" Elara replies and smiles nodding and dismissing the servant.
She wonders if they'll be taking her things to her chambers or if these are her chambers and the king sleeps elsewhere. She turns her focus to the stables and starts walking, the corridors are tall and filled with the suns setting colours. She looks over the guards as she passes them, posted at each main door and corner, it all seems much more tense than the outpost she knew.
'Must be the war, everyone's tense and on edge for the next battle against those dogs.' She thinks as she walks out into the court yard and to the stables. Reaching ferns stall she pats her, she's already been washed brushed and given hoof oil, the oil brushed into her mane makes her look so shiny, but her naturally dusty coat colour still shows. Elara smiles Fern isn't the biggest, strongest horse, or the fastest, but she's hers and that's all that matters. Entering the stall, Elara pats fern for a while, satisfied that her horse is well cared for she looks through the stalls, looking at all the other horses, Fern is thinner in comparison, the rest of these horses are draft and war horses, some short some tall and well muscled. Elara grabs her saddle, its heavy but she carries it in to ferns stall, she goes and brings some polish and a rag, Elara gets comfortable in the stall and begins to polish the leather the long ride left her favourite saddle scuffed and in need of a polish.
A few hours go by, Elara feeling overwhelmed decides to just stay in ferns stall sitting on the ground in a corner of clean hay, the stable hands pretend not to notice her. Varion comes into the stable he looks around, he doesn't see Elara but that's not the purpose of his visit, he snaps his head to one the stable hands.
"Have Thunder tacked and ready, Now." His voice is one of absolute command, the stable hand does as he is told, head down and quick.
Elara watches from a gap in the wood of Ferns stall, taking note of the anger in his tone, the aggression, he's so different from the kind brother she knew. Perhaps the war is stressing or he's just in a mood, she watches him standing by the gate, other horses are lead out, and Varion and a few armoured soldiers mount up and ride out the gate. She watches sticking her head out the stables slightly.
Having had enough, she gets up and goes inside, she walks into Orin as he leaves the war room, he smiles warmly.
"Come, Elara eat dinner with me in bed, you need your rest." His voice soft smooth and wanting.
Elara nods as Orin takes her by the arm leading her back into those chambers, and back to his soft bed, on the table beside the bed is a plater of meats and breads.
"Daughter, i have much to discuss with you." He says as he sits on the bed and pulls Elara down beside him, she sits looking at him.
"You make me so proud, my Princess, taming a wild horse on her own no less. Such grace and bravery." Orins affections and praise makes Elara blush.
"I know things are different here, its a change and it will take some time. That is why i am going to take time to make sure you are comfortable and loved." His tone is soft as he cups her face and plants a long slow kiss on her cheek a soft hmmm from his lips makes her tense with a rush of warmth.
Elara not used to this sudden affection blushes and freezes but she does not pull away. Orin takes note of this, everything he does a careful slow movement as he places a hand on her thigh onto of her gown, he smiles at her.
"Elara, i want you to know you do not need to hide in the stables, come let me hold you." He moves slow his arms circling her as he pulls her into his lap, watching her face for fear or revulsion, but all he sees is a touch starved woman anxious and submissive, it makes him tense in his loins.
All those years alone, and now Elara feels this warmth and acceptance, she blushes as Orin gathers her skirts, his hand slowly massaging her calf. His other hand stroking her back.
"Hush let me help you relax, trust your king." His voice is smooth and gentle but his eyes hold barely contained desire.
Elara closes her eyes leaning into his neck, eventually his hand massages her knee and then thigh, slow and sensual. Elara moans softly and then freezes suddenly, Orin smiles.
