The Kibbutz Doctor
The Kibbutz Doctor - Six Weeks
The Kibbutz Doctor - Six Weeks
Summer 1994. Kibbutz Messilot. I was eighteen and thought I understood how the world worked.
This is for Nava. Wherever you are.
---
Last week. Everyone knew I was leaving Sunday - Sean was going too, and Sofie, and half the other volunteers, new batch coming in Monday.
We stopped being careful. Wednesday afternoon in the storage room, Thursday night when she came to Block C while everyone was at the bar and just walked in and locked the door behind her, Friday morning in the medical centre with people walking past outside.
Saturday night. My last night. I found her at the pool, same place as that first time, sitting on the edge with her feet in the water, still in that white dress.
"Hey Doc!"
She looked up. "Daniel"
I sat down next to her and neither of us said anything for a minute. Just the sound of water and cicadas and someone's radio playing Hebrew pop music across the kibbutz.
"So, tomorrow then," she said finally.
"Er, yep."
"Don't worry, Avi is not back until Monday. I don't need to rush home tonight."
I didn't know what to say to that. Just reached for her hand and she let me take it. Her fingers were cold despite the heat.
"Come with me." She stood up and pulled me towards the equipment shed on the far side of the pool. No one used it after dark. She had the key.
Inside old pool furniture and loungers stacked against the wall. She spread a towel on one of them and lay down, pulled me down next to her.
We didn't fuck straight away. Just lay there with her head on my chest and my hand in her hair. I could feel her breathing, fast at first, then slower, like she was trying to memorise it.
"I have been thinking," she said quietly, "About what this was."
"Yeah?"
"It was not just. You know. Sex..."
"No, of course not."
"You are eighteen. You think you understand things."
"Maybe."
"But you do not. Not really. You know facts. Books. What people tell you." She lifted her head to look at me. "But you do not know what it is like to wake up next to someone for fifteen years and realise one day they stopped looking at you. Really looking."
I didn't say anything. Just watched her.
"I thought I knew what love was. What marriage was. I thought if you did everything right it would work. Be a good doctor. Be a good wife. Do not complain. Do not ask for too much." Her eyes were wet now. "But that is not knowing. That is just. Surviving."
"What's the difference?"
"Knowing is this. Right now. You. Here. Listening to me and not trying to fix it or tell me what I should do. Just seeing me." Her fingers traced my cheekbone. "The mess of it. All of it."
"You're not a mess."
"I am forty-two and fucking an eighteen-year-old volunteer in a pool shed. Of course I am a mess." Small laugh. "But with you I am not pretending I am not."
"Maybe that's better than pretending."
"Yes. Maybe it is." She kissed me then, soft. "You will go home and you will think you understand now. What it means to really connect with someone. But you will not. Not yet. Because you have not lost it yet."
"Lost what?"
"This. Whatever this is. You cannot know what it means to have something until you know what it means to lose it." She looked at me for a long moment. "And I think maybe that is what I am doing. Having something. Finally. Knowing I will lose it tomorrow."
"I'm here now."
"Yes. You are. And that is enough." She kissed me again. Deeper this time. "That has to be enough."
When we broke apart she started unbuttoning her dress, slow, fingers fumbling slightly. Not performing. Just undressing because she wanted to be naked with me. Wanted me to see her.
I helped her with it, pulled it over her head along with her bra and knickers, all of it. She lay back on the lounger and I just looked at her for a second. Those long legs. Stretch marks. The way her chest was rising and falling too fast. Real body. Forty-two and beautiful and completely herself.
"Come here."
I undressed and lay on top of her, kissing her neck, her collarbone, down to her tits. Not rushing. Just being there. Her hands in my hair, gripping, loosening, gripping again.
"Daniel."
"Yeah?"
"Look at me."
I looked up. Tears running down into her hair now.
"I need you to know something. These six weeks. They were. I have not felt like myself in so long. And with you I did. I do."
"Me too."
"You made me feel seen."
I didn't know what to say to that. Just kissed her. Her mouth opened under mine. Desperate. Like she was trying to breathe me in.
She reached down and guided me inside her, slow, both of us watching each other's faces. Her mouth fell open. That small gasp she always made.
"Stay like this. Just. Stay."
I stayed. Buried inside her. Not moving. Just there. Connected. Her legs wrapped around me, arms around my neck, foreheads touching. I could feel her pulse. Fast. Fluttering.
I started moving eventually. Slow. Long strokes. All the way out. All the way back in. Looking at each other the whole time. Her eyes never left my face. Like she was memorising every detail.
"This is what I needed. Not just the sex. This. You seeing me."
"I see you."
"I know." Her hand on my face, fingers trembling. "I know you do."
It built slowly. No rush. No urgency. Just us. Her breathing changing, getting faster, fingers digging into my back, then her nails, breaking skin probably.
Then something shifted. I saw it in her face. The way her mouth twisted. The way her eyes got wider. The desperation creeping in.
I pulled out. She made this sound. Protest. Loss. Like something had been ripped away.
I looked down at her. Her cunt wet and open. Her tits. Her stomach. All of her. The way she was looking at me. Like she was trying to hold onto this moment. Make it last.
I spat. Right on her stomach. Watched it land and slide down towards her cunt.
She gasped, hand going to where my spit was, rubbing it into her skin, fingers twitching.
"Again."
I spat on her tits, then leaned down and licked it off. Tasted myself on her. Salt and her and something raw. Her whole body shuddered under me.
"Fuck me. Properly fuck me. Like you mean it."
I pulled out. She made this noise. Half protest, half need. I flipped her over and pulled her up onto her knees. She went with it, got there herself halfway, arse up, face pressed into the towel.
Spat on my hand and rubbed it on my cock. Pushed back inside her from behind. Watched her arse swallow me, the way her back arched, the way her hands gripped the towel so hard her knuckles went white.
"Yes."
Started slow. One thrust. Two. Let her feel the angle. Then I fucked her hard. Not gentle anymore. Not slow. Just desperate. Trying to get as deep as possible. Trying to stay there. Trying to stop time. Her whole body moved with each thrust. I could see her toes curling, uncurling, curling again.
Her face pressed into the towel, arse up, taking all of me, making these sounds. Not words. Just need. Small whimpers, then louder, then she was biting the towel to stay quiet.
I pulled out again. She whimpered into the towel. Her whole body went rigid, like she was trying to hold herself together.
"Please. Daniel. Please."
I spat on her arse, her back, between her shoulder blades. Marking her. Claiming her. One last time. Watched it run down her spine and her whole body shivered.
"You're mine." I didn't know where it came from. Just said it.
"Yes."
"Say it."
"I am yours."
I pushed back in. All the way. Right to the hilt. She made this sound. Guttural. From deep in her throat.
"Again."
"I am yours. Ani shelcha." Her voice breaking on the Hebrew.
I fucked her harder, hands on her hips, pulling her back onto me, each thrust deeper, harder, more desperate. I could feel her starting to lose it - the way her breathing changed, the way her muscles were tensing and releasing.
"Close. Ken, ken, achshav."
"Look at me."
She turned her head. Face streaked with tears and sweat and my spit. Hair stuck to her forehead. Mouth open. Eyes locked on mine. And I saw it. That split second. The moment she realised she couldn't hold it back anymore. The panic. The surrender.
"Now."
I let go. Came so hard I thought I'd black out. Pumping into her. Filling her. Watched her face the whole time - mouth falling open wider, eyes going unfocused, then that small moment of shame, of losing control, of giving in completely.
She came too. Silent scream into the towel. Her whole body went rigid, then jerked against me. Arse pushing back. Taking everything. Every last drop.
I collapsed on top of her. Both of us breathing like we'd run a marathon. My cock still inside her. Twitching. I could feel her cunt clenching around me. Involuntary. Her body not done yet.
We stayed like that for a long time. Neither of us wanting to move. To separate. To end it. Her breathing slowed. Then mine. But we still didn't move.
Eventually she pushed me off gently and started getting dressed. I watched her become the doctor again. The wife. The person who wasn't herself anymore. Watched her button her dress, smooth her hair, wipe her face. Each movement deliberate. Like she was putting on armour.
"You should go. Before anyone sees."
At the door I turned back. "Nava."
"Yes?" She wouldn't look at me now. Just at the floor.
"Thank you."
She looked at me then. For a long moment. Her face was different. Composed. The doctor. But her eyes were still wet. Still real. Then she nodded once. Sharp. Final. "Thank you for looking."
I walked back to Block C. Sean was already asleep. I packed my rucksack and lay in my bunk. Barely slept. Kept seeing her face. That moment when she lost control. When she gave in. When she was completely herself.
Morning came too fast. Everyone gathering by the gate, the bus idling, Pieter shaking hands, Sofie crying because she'd got attached to someone, Sean hungover and complaining about the heat.
I looked for Nava. Couldn't see her. Then there she was, standing by the medical centre, just watching. White coat on. Hair tied back. Doctor mode. But standing perfectly still.
Our eyes met. Held. She didn't smile. Neither did I. Just looked at each other. One last time. I saw her hand go to her stomach. Just for a second. Where I'd spat. Where I'd been. Then she dropped it.
I got on the bus and sat at the back. Window seat. Watched her standing there as the bus pulled away. Still perfectly still. Not waving. Not moving. Just watching. The medical centre got smaller. The dining hall. The pool. All of it.
She was still standing there when we turned the corner and she disappeared from view.
I sat there. Kibbutz getting smaller behind us. Sean talking about Ireland and whether they'd qualify for the Euros. Sofie already messaging her new bloke on her phone. The bus smelled like diesel and sweat and everyone else's plans for what came next.
I could still feel her. Still smell her on my skin. Still see her face when she came, looking right at me, seeing me, being seen. That moment of panic before she gave in. That split second when she realised it was over and she couldn't hold back anymore.
Nothing had changed for her.
Everything had changed for me.
I watched the valley disappear. The kibbutz gone now. Just dust and heat and the road stretching out ahead.
Six weeks. It wasn't enough. It was everything.
Do you think I have forgotten. About you?
