The Long Corruption Ch. 03
Jeanie had never been on a plane before.
She remembered gripping the armrest so tightly during takeoff that James had to gently pry her fingers free and place her hand in his. He hadn't mocked her, or even said anything at all. Just pressed her palm flat, holding it while the world fell away beneath them.
Everything since had felt like that, one long, impossible floating sensation. She didn't know how to describe it. This wasn't her life. Nothing she'd ever known to be true of the world from personal experience.
She didn't remember falling asleep in the car on the way to the resort's private welcome lounge in the Florida Keys. But she must have, because the next thing she knew, a staff member in a pale blue uniform was smiling as he opened her door. "Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Addams."
Her cheeks warmed at the sound of the name. Growing used to her new name was going to take time. James had told her that they'd have to go and officially change it. While Mrs. Addams may not legally be correct yet, she enjoyed hearing it, and a smile crossed her face, as she leaned into James a little more.
The boat ride across the water was so smooth it barely registered as motion. She sat close to James, tucked beneath his arm, trying not to gape at the gentle whitecaps, the mangroves rising from the water, the way the sky touched the ocean so low and wide it didn't seem possible they belonged to the same planet she called home.
By the time they stepped off onto the dock, she'd forgotten what day it was.
Their bungalow was... breathtaking.
Thatched roof. Arched wooden doors. A private deck that opened directly to the beach. Inside, the floors were smooth and cool underfoot, with ceiling fans turning overhead and linens soft enough to shame silk. A deep soaking tub stood by a window, half-framed by gauzy curtains that shifted in the breeze. The air smelled like citrus and sea salt.
Jeanie turned slowly in place, taking it all in. "This... this is like something out of a movie."
James glanced at her. "Disappointed?" he asked.
She shook her head quickly, too awed to be embarrassed. "No. Just... I didn't think places like this were real."
His lips lifted into a faint smile. "Come on, let's get our stuff unpacked."
There had been a moment, back at the house, just before they left, where she remembered standing in front of her suitcase, fidgeting with the little brass clasp. Carmen had packed most of it. Jeanie hadn't even seen the swimsuits until that morning. Everything inside looked tiny. Soft fabrics, pale colors. A few slips of lace she didn't recognize as hers.
She'd tried to ask James if she should pack something different.
"What she chose will do," was his only response.
And now here they were.
Her heart thudded softly as she stood in the center of the room, fingers brushing over the edge of her suitcase. She'd heard James step out to the patio behind her, now alone, Jeanie let out a slow breath.
Tomorrow, they'd start exploring the island. But tonight... tonight was just them.
They didn't do much. Jeanie unpacked slowly, finally seeing all of what Carmen had packed for the first time. Some of the pieces were fine soft fabrics in pale colors, slim dresses that clung more than she was used to. Others, though, left her puzzled. There were delicate slips of lace with no clear purpose, gauzy tops too sheer to hide anything, and one item that she couldn't tell if it was meant for sleeping or going out. A few pieces looked more like underthings than clothes.
She hesitated, holding one up with a furrowed brow before folding it quickly and tucking it into a drawer. Carmen hadn't labeled anything. There were no instructions. Jeanie could only assume it was all chosen with James in mind.
When she asked if she should wear something else, James was standing by the bed, unbuttoning his shirt. "Your traveling cloths may not be the best for tonight," he said. "You'd probably be more comfortable in something lighter."
So, she wore one of the less-revealing dresses for dinner, still lighter and lower-cut than anything she would've packed for herself. It moved when she walked, drawing her awareness to how the hem skimmed her knees and how the fabric caught the shape of her chest. James hadn't said anything when she stepped out of the bathroom. Just looked at her once, then reached for his wallet.
Dinner was quiet. Just the two of them at a corner table by the water, the sky was streaked orange and mauve as the sun dropped below the ocean. The air smelled like grilled fish and sweet tropical scents. Jeanie didn't drink more than a few sips; she was too tired to enjoy it and not very familiar with alcohol. James ordered for them both, choosing simple but elegant dishes: buttered lobster, roasted vegetables, fresh fruit with cream.
He didn't say much at first, just nodded along as they ate. But when Jeanie started talking, mostly to fill the silence, he didn't stop her. She told him about the plane ride, how strange it felt to be looking down at the world, how she didn't know if she was supposed to tip the man who opened the car door at the lounge. She wasn't even sure why she was saying half of it. It just came out.
James asked a few small questions here and there, letting her keep going. He didn't smile much, but he watched her with the kind of focus that made her sit a little straighter. It wasn't uncomfortable, but made her realize how much she still needed to learn his mannerisms and his expressions.
It wasn't what she was used to, and the discomfort seem to make her want to keep talking.
Afterward, they walked the narrow sand paths that crisscrossed the island. The air was still warm, but the breeze off the water felt good on her skin. Lanterns lit the way in flickering golds, and she caught herself reaching for his arm, wanting to feel his warmth next to her.
When they returned to the bungalow, she stepped into the shower alone. The water pressure was strong, the scent of the soap delicate and unfamiliar. She took her time. By the time she emerged, wrapped only in a towel, James was already in bed, reading. He didn't comment on her state of undress. He simply set the book down as she slid under the covers beside him, pressed a warm hand to her waist, and kissed the top of her head.
"You've had a long day. Sleep," he murmured.
She didn't need to be told twice.
The last thing she remembered was the sound of the ocean beyond the open patio doors and the weight of his hand still resting lightly against her hip.
She woke to the soft brush of fingers along her shoulder and the soothing sound of his voice, close to her ear.
"Time to wake up, Jeanie."
Jeanie stirred, the sheet tangled around her legs. The light in the bungalow was gentler than she'd expected, with sun filtering through thin linen curtains, shadows shifting with the breeze. It smelled like salt and fruit and something floral she couldn't place.
She blinked slowly, turning her head toward the sound of his voice. James was sitting on the edge of the bed, already dressed, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves casually rolled.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked, his voice softer than usual.
She nodded, then yawned and tucked the blanket under her arms. "I think so. I don't remember falling asleep."
"You were out before I turned the page," he said with the hint of a smile. "Come on. Breakfast is on the way."
He handed her a small glass of juice. "Start with this. We'll head down to the water after we eat."
The sweetness surprised her. It was cold, bright, and citrusy. She sipped slowly while James stood from the bed.
Through the open patio doors, she could hear the faint lap of water, along with the distant call of gulls.
When he stepped outside to take a short call, Jeanie slid out of bed. She moved to the drawers where she had placed the items Carmen had packed, standing in front of it, she could feel her nerves begin prickling beneath her skin.
She hadn't checked the swimsuits last night, choosing to scoop them up and simply place them in one of the provided drawers. She chose the top one from the pile, a delicate light blue selection, and laid it on the bed to study it properly.
The top was made of two small triangles held together by thin strings. The bottoms were even more revealing. High-cut, narrow at the sides, and cut so low in front she felt her stomach tighten just looking at them.
She picked them up, turned them over, tried to understand how women wore them. The material was soft and stretchy, narrower than anything she'd ever owned. Even her underwear from home covered more than this.
She'd never worn anything like it before. Not at home. Not anywhere. Still, she carried the bikini into the bathroom and closed the door behind her.
Closing the door gently behind her, she laid the swimsuit on the counter and took a breath before looking herself in the mirror to gather her courage. Her reflection gave her pause.
The lighting in here was different. More natural, and direct. It didn't hide things, and she wasn't used to seeing herself like this, upright and bare in the daylight, every detail clear. Her skin still held the tan from the spray Carmen's person had applied. Still, she knew that under the darker skin, she was naturally pale. Especially across her stomach and chest, where her tan faded into softer, untouched skin. The knowledge made her wince at the idea of how she'd look on the beach if not for Carmen.
She'd always had a bit of a farmer's tan from old tank tops and work shirts, uneven color where the sun hit hardest while she was out tending the garden or hanging laundry. She never thought much of it before. But now, in this light, wearing something this small, it stood out more than she wanted it to.
She brushed a hand over her hip, then down the outside of her thigh, trying not to look too long at the parts of herself she'd never had to think about. Then she reached for the bikini top and slid the thin strings over her shoulders, tying them behind her neck and back with unsteady fingers.
It didn't feel secure. The cups barely covered her. One tug and it would slide. Glancing down to make sure everything was at least where it should be, she moved on.
Then came the bottoms. They were worse... much worse.
She stepped into them, pulling the high-cut straps up over her hips. The fabric sat low. Much lower than she expected. It rested far down her abdomen, dipping into a sharp curve that exposed more than just her skin.
When she looked in the mirror, her heart gave a hard, embarrassed thump.
There was no hiding it. The bikini didn't just fail to cover the sides, it didn't cover the top either. Her pubic hair appearing darker and fuller in contrast to the bikini, spilled out in every direction. It curled over the waistband and out the sides, visible against her skin, stubborn and obvious no matter how she tried to adjust her hair, or the bikini.
Back home, she'd only ever shaved as much as she needed to when doing her legs, just enough to keep anything from showing past the edge of her underwear. This was different. This demanded something else entirely. Something she hadn't prepared for.
She tried to adjust the fabric, tugging it forward, then upward, but it didn't help. If anything, it made things worse. The cut was designed to show, not hide.
She turned sideways, then back again. There was no angle where it didn't look wrong on her. Her face flushed in embarrassment, unsure how to address it, and she wasn't ready to be seen like this.
Her fingers hovered at the waistband, trying to press it down flat, when she heard the soft sound of the door opening behind her.
"I was wondering what was taking so long."
Startled by the door and his voice, her head whipped toward the sound. James stood just inside the doorway, calm as ever, his eyes already on her. She tried to cover herself, hands darting to her hips, then hesitating, unsure where to hide. The bikini didn't leave many options.
"I - I didn't know you were back," she said quickly, voice signaling her embarrassment.
He stepped forward. "I didn't mean to sneak up on you."
Her skin burned as his eyes lingered. He didn't look surprised or embarrassed, just vaguely amused, like he'd walked in on something he already suspected and was waiting to see how she'd handle it.
"I don't think this one fits right," she mumbled, trying to adjust the front again, though it was hopeless. "I didn't realize... how small it would be."
He didn't answer right away. His gaze dropped once more and then met her eyes.
"It fits how it's meant to, you just need some grooming."
She flushed deeper. "I wasn't... I didn't know I needed to..." Her voice faltered. She didn't know how to finish the sentence. There was no delicate way to sayI didn't know I needed to shave more.
James watched her carefully. Then, still in that same tone, he said, "Would you like help with that?"
She blinked; unsure she'd heard him right. "With...?"
He nodded once, eyes on her where the bottoms sat, lewdly displaying her. He stepped just close enough for her to feel his presence, but not quite touching her.
"I don't want to look... messy," she said softly.
James didn't respond. He stepped past her and opened a drawer beneath the sink, pulling out a fresh razor. Then he filled a bowl with warm water, took a small towel from the shelf, and walked back into the main room of the bungalow.
Jeanie stood frozen, feeling exposed and unsure what to do.
"Out here," he called.
She hesitated with her heart racing. When she stepped out, she found him setting the bowl down on the floor in front of one of the armchairs. He'd already folded a towel across the rug, setting out the blade and a small bottle of lotion beside it. Everything was placed with care, like this was something he'd done before.
James turned to her. "Sit at the edge. Legs apart."
She stopped where she stood, arms half-crossed over her stomach. "Are you serious?"
Her voice cracked slightly. The idea of doing this out here, in the middle of the room, made her stomach twist. The open windows, the daylight, the chair that wasn't intended for anything like this. She looked at the bowl of water, the towel laid out on the floor, the razor resting beside it. It all felt too deliberate.
"You want me to-" she started, but couldn't finish the sentence.
"You said you didn't want to look messy. This is how we fix that," he replied, looking up at her without blinking.
Her mouth was dry. Every instinct in her told her to cover herself, to hide, to retreat back into the bathroom and pretend she hadn't come out. James had touched her before, intimately, but this was different. There were no dimly lit lamps, no bedsheets, no privacy in shadows. This was broad daylight, a chair in the middle of an open room, with her legs spread while he knelt between them, razor in hand.
It felt clinical. Exposing. Wrong in a way she couldn't explain.
He had already seen her. Already kissed her right next to there. But somehow this felt more vulnerable. There was no pleasure to distract her, no moment to disappear into. Just her, bared completely, while he looked at her like he was preparing to carve away every last trace of purity she had left. It felt impossible and humiliating.
And still, she moved. Slowly and obediently.
She stepped forward, her arms dropping to her sides, though her fingers twitched with the urge to shield herself. The chair sat in a pool of warm light; the towel placed beneath it in anticipation of her. She perched on the edge, legs still tightly drawn together.
James didn't speak. He knelt before her, and with smooth, sure, smooth movements, he dipped the cloth into the bowl. Looking up again to look her in her eyes for just a moment, and then his gaze dropped to her thighs.
He touched her lightly, tapping the inside of one knee with two fingers. "Wider."
She hesitated, then inched her legs apart.
The cloth came next. It was warm and damp, as it pressed gently to the crease. She flinched at the intimacy of the touch, but didn't pull away. He used slow, methodical passes, softening the hair, and warming her skin. Every time he rinsed and reapplied, she felt it more acutely. The way his hand slid along her inner thighs, and over her mound. The firmness of his grip. The way he adjusted her without asking.
He didn't rush and he wasn't rough, but nothing about it felt casual for her.
When the cloth had done its work, he set it aside, and then came the cream. He poured a small amount into his palm, rubbed it between his hands, and brought them to her body.
This time, when his fingers spread her, she let out a soft breath she didn't mean to. There was no tenderness in his touch, only a deliberate precision. He worked the cream in slowly, smoothing it over hair, the skin, delicate folds, then lower than she was prepared for. He tilted her hips to get a better angle, repositioned her legs when they trembled.
She was blushing so hard she thought she might be glowing. Every inch of her was on display, exposed, and yet she couldn't stop herself from watching him.
His expression was hard to read. His brows were slightly drawn, lips parted, his eyes watched every movement of the blade. They were focused, but they weren't blank. There was something under the surface, and even though she couldn't identify it, she liked the way it made her feel.
She hadn't thought something like this would interest a man. It was embarrassing, awkward... practical.
He rinsed the razor slowly between passes, in no rush to finish. His jaw looked tenser than before, and once or twice he paused without explanation, just watching the spot where the blade had been, as if assessing.
She didn't know if that meant anything. She was still learning how to read him.
The process utterly captivated her, gaze fixed on the razor as it systematically cleared away the dark curls, leaving behind the silken, pale expanse of her pubis. And then, as he worked lower, the soft, dusky hue of her labia, revealed with an almost surgical precision that was both clinical and profoundly arousing. She'd never seen herself like this, so exposed, so meticulously prepared, and the intensity of the process confused her with a feeling of exposure and fascination.
The longer it went on, the more she felt it, like something was stirring at the edge of understanding. And once she started noticing it, she couldn't ignore how her breathing had changed too. How her thighs had gone slack, her fingers no longer gripping the sides of the chair.
There was no pretending she felt nothing. Whatever this was, it had become something more.
She didn't speak. She barely moved. Her legs stayed open as he continued, the razor gliding in short, careful strokes. He tilted her slightly, working closer toward the center, then lower. Her breath held when his hand eased beneath her, fingers spreading her just enough to reach places she never imagined needing attention.
Then he paused.
"You'll need to turn."
"Turn?" she questioned, blinking
He didn't explain. He simply took her by the hips and guided her gently to stand.
"I'm not done," he said. "The cut in the back of the bikini is just as narrow."
Her cheeks flamed. She opened her mouth as if to protest, then shut it again. She hadn't even considered that. Hadn't thought to look at herself from behind in the mirror, though the way the fabric had clung to her earlier should have told her everything.
James placed a clean towel across the back of the chair, then looked at her. She moved like she was sleepwalking, stepping to turn slowly, resting her forearms on the towel as he positioned her.
Her legs parted slightly. Her back arched as she knelt on the cushion.
