My Stepson, My Lover

*A short character-driven story with limited explicit content*

I fucked my stepson. Once. Then again. Too many times; I stopped counting. It stopped feeling like a mistake somewhere along the way.

I'm Sarah Benedetti. Fifty-four. I restore paintings in Padua, months of work most tourists walk past in seconds.

I have been married for seven plus years to Giuseppe, he teaches medieval history at the Uni, drinks far too much wine, and has a belly.

One stepson, Alessandro, twenty-six, still lives with us, because Italian sons never leave, and Giuseppe won't hear otherwise. He's now in his final year of his architecture degree.

I'd never cheated before. Never even thought about it. Giuseppe and I had our good years. Then the average years. Then now.

Alessandro was polite but distant when I first married his father. Still grieving, still angry. Resented me, the replacement. Understandable. I gave him space. Tried to. We coexisted, barely.

Then, slowly, something shifted. I don't know when. I wish I hadn't noticed.

Not handsome in the obvious way, no. Striking, yes, tall, dark, those architect's hands. Sharp, precise. Too precise. It unsettled me.

"You're still on the Giotto?" he said, leaning in. Christmas Eve. Giuseppe at mass. I'd faked a headache, didn't feel like church.

"The angel's wing," I said, not looking up from my microscope. "Someone tried to 'restore' it in the 1800s with house paint."

"Vandals." He moved closer.

I showed him the damage through the scope. His breath was too close, his shoulder too warm.

After that, he started visiting my studio. Asking about technique. Bringing me coffee.

"You know," he said one evening in February, "I never understood why Papa married you until now."

"And now?"

"Now I get it," he said, eyes on me.

We continued talking. Hours went by. About everything. About nothing.

He told me about his mother's death. The anger at his father for moving on. The guilt about starting to care for me. Coming to see me not as Maria's replacement, but as Sarah.

The miscarriages. Christ, I don't usually talk about that. The loneliness. Trying for years to be a mother to someone who didn't want one.

Wine turned into dinners when Giuseppe worked late. Then walks. Always with excuses, his thesis, my commissions, anything to justify why we were alone again.

The first time was in my studio, against the restoration table. Easels crowded around us like silent witnesses. Giuseppe away at a conference in Bologna. Alessandro had come to help move a canvas, one touch was enough. We knew.

It wasn't smooth. Not practiced. Just desperate, messy. Nothing like the careful, almost polite sex with Giuseppe. Alessandro wanted more, too much. And I gave it.

Surprised those parts of me weren't dead after all. Thought they were.

What the fuck had I done?

We fell into patterns too quickly. Studio sessions when Giuseppe was teaching. Stupid risks that should have scared me more than they did.

Three weeks later we fucked in our upstairs bathroom.

Giuseppe had left for a faculty meeting. Three hours minimum.

"He's gone."

"Yeah... I know."

"So we could... maybe... if you wanted..."

We stumbled into the bathroom, barely made it. His hands everywhere, clumsy as a teenager. My skirt bunched at my waist. The sink cluttered, Giuseppe's razor, his aftershave hanging in the air like a ghost.

"Cristo, I've been thinking about this all morning."

"Shut up. Don't talk."

"Turn around."

Turned toward the mirror, Giuseppe's mirror. The one he shaved in every day. The one I fixed my lipstick in. Now it showed me bent over, Alessandro peeling down my underwear.

"Look at yourself. Look how fucking beautiful you are."

I looked. Saw what I was. A wife. A stepmother. A whore. Maybe all of it at once.

He pushed inside me. No finesse. All desperation.

"Fuck," I gasped. "That's... oh Cristo."

"You okay? Am I hurting..."

"Don't stop, please, fuck me harder. Harder."

This wasn't lovemaking. It wasn't even close. Just fucking, raw, graceless, too much, and not enough.

"Merda," he gasped, losing the rhythm. "You're so, fuck, you're so tight, madre,"

"Harder."

Then a car noise. We froze. Alessandro buried balls deep inside me. Sweat.

"Shit!"

Giuseppe's car. Keys. Door...

"Fuck." Shoved him. Stumbled. Cock hard. Wet. Panicking. "Dress."

"Can't find..."

"Sarah!" Giuseppe. Downstairs.

"Coming!" My voice cracked, too high. I cleared my throat, "Second!"

Skirt down. No underwear. Floor. Alessandro. Jeans. Shaking.

"My..."

"Leave them."

"There you are darling, you look...flushed."

His come still sliding down my thigh, I prayed he wouldn't notice.

At dinner, Alessandro barely ate. Kept shifting in his chair. Giuseppe droned about his colleagues.

"Pass the vino?" Alessandro asked. Voice cracked slightly.

"You feeling alright son? You look pale..."

"Just tired. Studying."

Under the table, Alessandro's knee touched mine. Brief. Electric. I could feel it still, raw, aching, like the chair itself remembered what we'd done.

Giuseppe went to bed at eleven and kissed me goodnight with the same mouth that had been warm from kissing me hello just after his son had been inside of me.

Alessandro came to see me.

"We can't keep doing this."

"I know."

"He almost... fuck, he almost caught us."

"I know."

"But I can't... I can't stop thinking about you." His fingers found me again. Still wet. Still wanting. I hated myself for that.

We fucked again. Quieter this time. His hand over my mouth. My nails in his back.

I could hear Giuseppe snoring down the hall.

"Tomorrow," he said. "When he goes to work."

"Yes."

"I hate myself for this."

"Good. You should."

Fell asleep with Alessandro's taste in my mouth, Giuseppe's ring heavy on my finger, the sound of both men haunting me in different ways.

Weeks passed. More meetings. More fucking. More lies.

"Do you think about her?" I asked once. Watching him dress in my studio. "Your mother?"

"When I'm with you?" He considered this seriously. "No. That's what makes it so fucked up." He shrugged. "Would it be better if I did? If I pretended you were her?"

Wouldn't have been better. Would have been worse. But at least it would have made sense.

He started talking about retirement. Moving to the countryside. Alessandro finishing university and maybe getting married soon. Normal family things. Under the dinner table, his son's hand stroking my thigh and fingering my wet cunt.

In the kitchen later, he cornered me.

"He thinks I should find a nice girl."

"You should."

"Would that stop this?" Gestured between us.

Wouldn't have. Terrible truth. Even if he'd found someone, fallen in love completely, I'd have continued. Beyond reason. Beyond decency.

My husband noticed changes. Said I seemed "different." Asked if something was wrong.

The week after Alessandro's graduation, Giuseppe had to travel to Rome. Research trip. Three days.

"This is our chance," he said. "To end it properly."

I knew what he meant. One last time. Burn it out of our systems.

Three days alone in the house. Barely left the bedroom. Barely spoke. We both knew this was the end. Needed to exhaust whatever madness had possessed us.

By the second day, I'd stopped getting fully dressed. Silk slip. Sheer stockings that caught on the sheets. Things I'd never worn for my husband but found myself putting on for Alessandro.

The collar appeared that afternoon. Leather. Simple. He fastened it around my neck with hands that shook slightly.

"Don't move," he said. Not asking.

I stayed still. Watched him in the dresser mirror. The stockings made my legs look longer. The collar made everything else disappear.

He knelt behind me. Fingers tracing the seam up the back of my thigh.

"Beautiful," he breathed against my spine.

"Alessandro."

"Shh."

His hands moved higher. Found where the stockings ended. Where skin began. I gripped the dresser edge.

"Look at yourself."

I did. Saw what three days of this had made me. Hair loose. Lips swollen. Marks on my throat from the collar. The slip barely covering anything that mattered.

"Is this what you wanted?" I asked the mirror.

"Yes." No hesitation. "Exactly this."

Later, he removed the collar. Kissed the marks it left. The stockings stayed on through dinner. Cold pasta we'd forgotten to eat earlier. His father's chair empty at the head of the table.

"This has to be enough," I said that night, lying in sheets that smelled like us. Like sin.

"It won't be," he said. "But we'll pretend it is."

The third morning, I woke. He was dressed. Bag packed.

"I'm moving to Milan. Got a job with a firm there."

"Alessandro..."

"Don't." He kissed my forehead. Paternal. Wrong. "Tell Papa I'll call him."

He left that afternoon. Giuseppe returned that evening, asking where his son had gone.

"He got a job," I said. "Wanted to start fresh."

Giuseppe was hurt but proud. Called it independence. Growing up. If only he knew.

Haven't told Giuseppe I wake at night certain I hear Alessandro's footsteps in the hall. Check my phone for messages that never come.

Sometimes walking through the university, I think I see him. Dark hair. Giuseppe's profile. Never Alessandro. Perhaps he's married now. Perhaps found someone else to want. Be wanted by. Perhaps forgotten me entirely.

Giuseppe talks about visiting Alessandro in Milan. Meeting his new life. I make excuses. Too much work. Can't leave the restoration projects.

The university commissioned me to restore a series of Renaissance portraits. Mothers and sons, mostly. I stare at them for hours, wondering what secrets they kept.
