Fallen Bride

The village church stood proud against the clear blue sky, its bells chiming joyously, their sound echoing through the quaint village streets out towards the distant hills.

Max Bovey positioned himself at the foot of the church steps, he felt the warmth of pride swell within him, contrasting sharply with the pangs of nostalgia that tugged at his heart.

Aaron, his son, emerged from the doors of the church with his new bride, Katrina as a chorus of cheers and applause erupted from their gathered friends and family. Confetti and rice rained down upon the couple in a celebratory shower, the pastel colours dancing in the sunlight. The rapid clicks of the professional photographers camera captured every radiant moment, as the idyllic atmosphere wrapped around them.

Amidst the joy, Max Bovey lingered at the edges. His stance, tall and stoic despite how he stood isolated from the infectious laughter that vibrated through the air. He felt like an outsider at his own son's wedding, estranged not just from the moment but from the very fabric of the family he had known, and the son he had raised. His life so unravelled some ten years after the marriage to his ex-wife Donna had dissipated on an acrimonious divorce after she had discover a thread of his adulterous behaviour by walking in on him and a vivacious local girl, Kim Smith.

The weight of the moment and the distance from his only son, made heavier by the presence of Donna, his ex-wife, mingling and engaging warmly with guests away to his right. She revelled in every moment, drawing attention to herself wherever possible, ignorant of the fact that the attention of the day should focus on her Son and his stunning new Wife.

Max forced himself to maintain a semblance of composure as he watched the celebration unfold, each exuberant cheer turning the knife of regret deeper in his gut. Memories of family gatherings once filled with laughter raced through his mind. He cast a quick glance at Donna, who bared the joy of a proud mother, her eyes glimmering with pride as she took in the happy couple. Max would never change the past, but he could not help but in such moments as this he still could not happen but wonder what might have been. He had always chosen his own path, selfishly or otherwise.

As Aaron and Katrina moved toward him, his heart lifted, and he fixed a sincere smile upon his features. Aaron, dressed impeccably in a crisp dark grey morning suit, stopped short before Max. Their eyes met, and for a fleeting moment, Max saw his son as he used to be, full of warmth, innocence, and potential.

"Dad," Aaron grinned as he paused before him with the kind of smile that always lit up his heart.

"Congratulations, Son," Max offered, his voice breaking slightly with emotion. "Welcome to the family, Mrs. Bovey."

Katrina, a vision of radiance blushed, her blonde hair styled elegantly within a sheer white veil framed her beautiful features. The fitted satin and lace of her wedding dress hugged her figure, accentuating its grace. She smiled demurely, a hint of shyness flickering across her face.

"Thank you..." she replied, glancing sideways at her husband. "...That's the first time anyone's used my new name."

Max felt an unexpected warmth swell within him as he exchanged pleasantries with them, an all too fleeting exchange as they were soon swamped by the moment. Every other guest seeking the attention of the happy couple.

Stepping back his attention was captured by a slightly unsettling sight. Katrina's gaze drifted too toward a figure standing a short distance away, a tall, dark-haired man in his mid-twenties. With shoulder-length hair and a brooding air, he stood just outside the church wall leaning casually against a lamppost, casting his eye across the unfolding vibrant spectacle.

The quiet tension in the moment thickened. Max watched, steely-eyed, as Katrina's drew her attention away from the dark-haired stranger only to glance back several times, each glance unsettling him further.

Before he could begin to comprehend the situation, the crowd swelled around them, enveloping the couple as they prepared to leave and head off to the Hotel where the reception was to ne held. The joyful guests individually heaping praise and well wishes on both Aaron and Katrina.

"You make such a lovely couple." He heard a middle-aged lady whose name he could not recall offer as they slipped through and archway over the gate to the church.

Their wedding car, a lavish Silver Rolls Royce, pulled up and Aaron and Katrina climbed into the back seat, laughter spilling out as they settled into the leather upholstery. Max stood at the edge of the crowd, a profound sense of pride washing over him.

He felt like a spectator, yet still the joy of the moment was overshadowed by a chilling suspicion. His eyes wandered back to the stranger, who now walked away from the church in the direction of the Village Green.

As the Rolls Royce drove away, Max lingered in the shadow of the moment, grappling with the nagging intuition that Katrina held a deeper connection with the dark-haired stranger.

"Congratulations, Son," he whispered to the empty air.

~: Four Weeks Later :~

On a balmy late spring afternoon, Max Bovey pulled up in front of the recently renovated cottage that his son Aaron and his new wife, Katrina, called home.

The gentle sunlight bathed the cozy structure, casting shadows through the budding trees. Stepping out of the vehicle he retrieved a tool bag from the back seat, a sense of pride washing over him. This visit was just part of an effort to reconnect and mend the fissures in their far too distant relationship. A relationship that has been rekindled since his Son's wedding day, and in no small part due to his new wife's insistence on the importance of harmonious families.

With the key he had obtained from a secure lockbox on the exterior wall, Max let himself into the house. Stepping inside, he was startled by a scurrying ginger and white cat that darted past him, the disgruntled feline clearly disturbed by his unexpected arrival. That he did not even know his son and new daughter-in-law had a cat was a trivial testimony to what little he knew of their lives.

Making his way through the house to the kitchen, Max's thoughts shifted to the broken tap that Aaron had frequently complained about over the last few weeks. He set his tool bag down on the kitchen table with a smirk, he could not help but chuckle at his son's incompetence with even the simplest DIY tasks. The truth immediately apparent, the tap was not broken, it merely needed some adjusting to stop the incessant dripping into the porcelain basin beneath it.

He was mindful of not wanting to patronise Aaron, so he set to work on replacing the tap with the shiny brass fixture that sat neatly boxed on the kitchen counter. It was only as he lay on his back securing the new tap underneath the sink that a sudden sound from upstairs caught his attention. As he paused his ears concentrated on the unmistakeable sound of creaking bed, a sound that was quickly followed by a females cry of unadulterated pleasure.

Max's heart raced, an embarrassment flooded over him. Unable to believe he was working on plumbing a tap while his son and new wife were busy upstairs, lost in their passionate embrace.

A confusion suddenly laced his mind on recalling that Aaron had specifically invited him over today, having mentioned that both he and Katrina would not be home. She was supposed to be at work whilst he was away at a conference in London. A mix of intrigue and concern settled in as he began to pack away his tools, unsure of how to proceed in light of the unexpected sounds that continued to echo down the stairs.

As he made his way through the kitchen towards the front door his contemplation was abruptly interrupted when Katrina hurried into the kitchen, wearing nothing but an oversized white T-shirt that hung loosely on her slender frame. Her face was visibly flushed, strands of hair tousled wildly in a way that only underlined the tryst in which she has obviously recently participated.

"Oh my god!" she exclaimed, her eyes widening as she spotted Max. "What are you doing here?"

Max barely had time to explain himself when a tall, familiar dark-haired man headed to down the stairs, his lower body wrapped only in a burgundy towel. His presence radiated a confidence that unsettled Max even further.

"Wait... wait... I can explain everything..." Katrina immediately stammered, panic flashing across her features as the dark-haired man instinctively took a step back.

"I think you had better try to," Max shot back, his voice steady but strained. His face clenching onto an angry snarl. Visions of the joyful wedding day clashed sharply with the reality before him, and the storm of questions swirled in his mind. "Although it seems more than fucking obvious."

The tension in the kitchen thickened, the atmosphere electric with unspoken words. Max's gaze shifted between Katrina, her demeanour both flustered and defensive and the stranger, who appeared equally bewildered by the unexpected encounter.

Katrina took a deep breath, collecting herself. "Max, it's not what it looks like."

"Well, I know what it sounded like," he retorted with a raised eyebrow, his patience worn thin. "So, explain it to me, Katrina... Because right now, it looks like you're fucking someone behind my son's back."

The dark-haired man shifted uncomfortably, tension held in the air as the room fell silent, as waited for Katrina to respond. Katrina's eyes darted back and forth between Max and the stranger, realisation settling in as she scrambled for the right words.

"It's complicated...." Katrina's voice trailed off, her confidence wavering in the face of confrontation.

"Complicated... That's putting it fucking mildly," Max interjected.

Katrina clasped her hands tightly together, her eyes pleading. "Please, just hear me out..."

The dark-haired male stepped forward hesitantly, breaking his silence. "I didn't intend for things to unfold like this."

Max's mind raced, his son deserved better than this tangled web of secrets. "Where does he fit into all this?"

"Tyler..." Katrina offered, putting a name to her lover, "...just leave."

As Tyler quietly slipped back up the stairs Katrina poured herself a glass of water from the newly installed tap. She stood there for a moment, her back to Max, taking steadying breaths as she tried to compose herself, embarrassment and concern etched across her face. Max watched her closely, sensing the tumult of emotions swirling within her, trying to ignore the sting of betrayal that gnawed at his conscience on his son's behalf.

He could see the weight of her infidelity pressing down on her, and for a moment, he felt that familiar protective instinct tighten within him, not for his son but strangely for her vulnerability as she finally turned to face him, her expression raw with emotion.

"Tyler... he... he was my boyfriend long before I met Aaron. We were young, and I loved him." She paused, her gaze dropping to the floor. "But he left... he broke my heart when he went travelling to Australia three years ago."

Max's heart twisted slightly at her obvious pain, but the anger and disappointment were not far behind. "And yet here he is back in your life.... He was there on your wedding day wasn't he?"

Katrina nodded, her gaze unwavering despite the fear glimmering in her eyes. "I didn't know he was back... He's only here visiting before moving back to Australia permanently... I thought... No, I hoped that we had both moved on. But when I saw him, it was like all those feelings rushed back... I feel so weak... I didn't resist. I just... fell into it."

Emotion coursed through her voice, and Max could see the turmoil etched on her face.

"I'm so sorry, Max..." she continued, "....Please, don't tell Aaron... I'll do anything... anything you ask of me."

His eyes fell over her as she implored him, her own eyes shimmering with tears, holding onto the hope of forgiveness. For a heartbeat, silence enveloped them, and as Max's gaze traversed her slender figure beneath the hem of the t-shirt that he assumed to be Tylers, confusion gripped him. Torn between the protective fatherly instinct and a wave of darker thoughts that surged within him.

"Anything I want?" he asked, his voice low, threading a delicate line between curiosity and a spiralling uncertainty.

Katrina met his gaze, her eyes wide and pleading. "Yes, anything... Please just keep this from Aaron."

Max could sense the desperation in her pleading voice, she was barely thinking about what she was asking him to keep from his son. Her confused emotions seeping into the air, mingling with the palpable tension that remained in the room.

"You need to understand..." Max offered, "...this isn't just about keeping secrets...It's about trust...and chaos."

~: Six Weeks Later :~

Max Bovey sat alone in contemplative silence, the weight of whisky in the tumbler he held felt heavy in his hand as rising from his seat he headed towards the living room window.

The sound of a car door closing had jolted him from his thoughts. He watched as the vehicle, a navy taxi, pulled away. A feeling of anticipation mingling with a dread that stirred in his gut.

A gentle knock at the front door echoed through the property. Swigging back the last of his drink, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand as he stood before a mirror over the fireplace, glancing at his reflection he took a deep breath to compose himself. After a moment's hesitation, he headed towards and opened the front door.

Katrina stood before him. Dressed in a sleek black halter neck dress that accentuated her figure, she was a vision of conflicting emotions. Dark denier nearly opaque black nylons clung to her legs, and her ankle-strap heels clicked softly against the wooden floor as she tentatively stepped inside the dimly lit property.

"Come on in," he offered, ushering her through the door while glancing outside to ensure they were not being observed.

Katrina stepped in quietly, her head bowed, avoiding his gaze. The air between them crackling immediately with an unspoken tension.

"Max..." she began, her voice barely above a whisper as she raised her pale blue eyes to his. "...I don't want to do this.... There... There has to be another way... how can you even ask this of me?."

He met her eyes, holding her gaze with a pity as his own resolve steadfastly built.

"I might suggest the only way I can uphold the secret of your adulterous ways.... is if I'm implicated," Max stated coldly, his own doubts consumed by the stunning appearance.

Her face covered in subtle make up that contoured her features, her eyes a little darker than he had ever seen before and her lips painted a deep shade of scarlet. Her long blonde hair pulled back from her face and sat in a long ponytail that hung down her back and fell just below her exposed shoulders.

Katrina shook her head in disbelief as his eyes feasted upon her, she took a step back, her arms wrapping her slender stomach her anxious posture revealing the inner turmoil that churned within her.

"I never meant for things to get like this. I thought... I thought that...." she hesitantly offered

"Stunning dress, by the way..." Max offered cutting across her, his tone nonchalant as he ignored her plea. "...Perfect choice...Just what I had in mind."

Katrina fidgeted further under his scrutiny and appraisal at the style of outfit he had requested, her breath hitching in her throat as she swallowed.

"Can I get you a drink?" he offered, trying to lighten the mood, though the dark intent of her invitation hung heavily in the air.

"If we're... If I'm going to... can... can we just get this over with?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"Sure," Max replied bluntly, his desire becoming unquenchable as he stepped towards his daughter in law.

Without another word, he took her hand. Turning he led her up the narrow staircase to the first-floor landing of the property. Within a matter of steps they reached the bedroom, darkness enveloped them, only the flickering candles that Max had prepared earlier illuminated the room as they cast a flickering warm glow that danced along the walls as they sat upon a chest of drawers and the bedside tables. The atmosphere felt charged as Max stepped aside and Katrina entered the room only to stand rooted to the spot once just inside the room. Hesitantly she turned to face him as Max stepped into the room and closed the door behind him gently

"Turn around," he commanded softly as he stepped before her.

Reluctantly, she obeyed, turning slowly on her heels. Max acted on impulse watching as her shoulders rose and fell heavily. A gasp passing her lips as he pulled a black silk blindfold from his back pocket. Looping it over her head he quickly secured it over her eyes, plunging her into enforced darkness as he knotted it below her long blonde ponytail.

"This might assist," Max offered as she trembled before him. "Relax... and appreciate... knowing your surrender will ensure my silence."

"This... this is so wrong," Katrina offered nervously her hands clenched at her side. "I cant do this."

Max ignored her anxiety as he moved closer, the scent of her perfume intoxicating him. Tracing his fingers firmly up her spine until he met and unfastened the single button that held her dress around her neck, the garment fell loose across her breasts as his free hand fell upon the zipper and lowered it from the small of her back over her pert buttocks.

Unfastened the black dress fell from her body to pool at her ankles revealing only the opaque stockings that clung to her slender legs. Lace topped stockings she had adorned at his request.

"My son is a very lucky man," he whispered, pulling her back against him, his right arm wrapping her waist as he kissed his lips along her exposed left shoulder, each kiss causing her to shiver against his touch.

"Then...then don't do this," she pleaded softly, her voice strained as if she were trying to hold onto her last shred of dignity.

"I have to," Max stated leading her, stepping her forward guiding her gently, until her shins met the edge of the bed, her turned her in his hands and assisted her to sit upon the soft white sheets that stretched across the bed. Stepping to her side she did not resist as he lay her across her back as she took long deep breaths as her hand fidgeted at her sides. The anticipation in the air was thick, almost suffocating.

Stood over her unbuttoning his shirt, he peeled it from his body unseen by her by virtue of the blindfold. Katrina fell still across the bed only her ample breasts rising and falling on heavy deep breaths moved as he unbuckled his jeans and pulled them down the tops of his legs, stepping out of them before kicking them across the floor to the foot of the bed, leaving him completely naked, his arousal aching as his erection rose as he looked down upon her.

"Don't be afraid," he offered as he knelt upon the bed and straddled her waist.

"I... I'll lose everything," Katrina replied, her words barely audible.

"So, might I... Tonight though... you're mine," he whispered, his breath warm against her skin as he lowered his body to lay across her. "Let me take what I desire."

"Just... Just do whatever you're gonna do to me," she reluctantly offered, in apparent surrender to the depravity of the moment as a deep sigh of resignation escaped her lips.

Max took control, as Katrina surrendered herself and her inhibitions. he guided her, pulling her up across the bed and positioning her. The darkness of their betrayal fuelling his sordid need under the terms of their arrangement. The claustrophobic air in bedroom grew even thicker with anticipation, wrapping around the pair of them like a cocoon The soft glow of candlelight illuminated their forms as they found themselves moving beyond the bated breath, there bodies pressing together on an unseen darkness that neither fully understood.
