A serial is a novel published in instalments while it is still being written. Authors post a chapter at a time, usually weekly, and the story finishes somewhere the author may not have fully mapped when they started.
That changes the reading experience in ways worth knowing about before you commit. The pacing is different — serialised chapters tend to end on a turn because the author needs you back next week, which produces a tighter rhythm than a novel read in three sittings. The relationship between writer and reader is different too: comments on chapter four can visibly change chapter seven.
The trade-off is risk. Serials get abandoned. A novel that stops at chapter eleven is not a novel, it is eleven chapters, and no amount of goodwill fixes that. Two things reduce the exposure: check when the last chapter went up before starting something long, and use the completed section above if an unfinished story would frustrate you.
Following an author is the mechanism that makes serials work. New chapters surface on your dashboard, so you are not checking back on a story that has not moved. It also tells the author someone is waiting, which is, in practice, the single strongest predictor of whether a serial gets finished.
