What Makes a Great Erotic Short Story
Ask ten writers and you will get ten answers, but the ones who write shorts well tend to agree on a few things.
Start late. The most common failure in amateur erotica is spending nine hundred words on how the characters got into the room. Begin as close to the moment as you can and let the reader assemble the rest — they are faster at it than you think.
Give someone something to lose. Desire without stakes is description. The stakes need not be dramatic: a friendship, a job, a self-image someone is not ready to surrender. They only have to be real to the character.
Write bodies as though they belong to people. The line between erotica and pornography is not explicitness — plenty of literary erotica is filthier than anything on a tube site. The line is whether the bodies are attached to an interior life.
Vary the sentences. Erotic prose fails most often at the level of rhythm, where every sentence arrives at the same length and the same pitch, and the reader stops registering escalation because nothing on the page is escalating.
End one beat early. The strongest shorts stop just before full resolution and let the reader finish the thought. A short that explains its own ending has spent its last paragraph arguing with the reader.
