Another Time in the West

Both woke up startled as there was suddenly a loud crash in the street. Seth was out of bed naked and picked up his gun belt out of instinct. Natalie just smiled at him and was completely relaxed and just gestured for Seth to return so she could cuddle up with him. Seth went to the balcony to get a glimpse of the sky and realized that it was a couple of hours after sunrise. He walked over and kissed Natalie who just smiled and snuggled up with the covers clearly not ready to get out of bed. She had gotten very accustomed to leisurely living in the city.

"Jess will be here with the bath and breakfast soon" Seth spoke out calmly and watched Natalie who sat up suddenly too excited to lay in bed.

Seth washed himself at the bowl of water in the corner and looked at himself in the mirror. First thing he noticed was that he had a smile on his face. He almost looked surprised at seeing this. His eyes were still set and alert, but he had a more relaxed air about him. He didn't like the fact that he was sleeping so deeply that he woke up the way they did but he loved how Natalie clearly was happy and relaxed. She was clearly getting used to this and as he thought this about her, he realized that he was himself thinking about next time he should go to the barber. He had already been there twice since they arrived here, and he couldn't say what year it was the last time he had seen a barber. The squaw with daughter that had lived with him had always cut his hair and he have shaved himself almost exclusively since he had lost his wife and daughter.

He got dressed while Natalie wrapped herself in a sheet and just walked onto the balcony to admire the street and the growing activity. Timber coming on wagons, it had been one of those that had lost its cargo onto the street. Men were busy reloading the wagon. There was a knock at the door and Jess sweet and today trembling voice announcing that it was breakfast and bath. Seth opened the door for them and smiled at her

"Breakfast for three, you and your brother should eat with Natalie. You keep her good company." Seth said it sweetly and politely to Jess, smiling at her and then turning to walk to Natalie who was coming inside. He kissed her and said he would be back to have lunch with her and Jess. Natalie only let him leave after having made Seth wrap his arms around her to hold her for a moment. Having checked his gun and all set, Seth left smiling at the boy.

Henry filled the tub up with hot water and had brough fresh bars of soap and some smelly stuff he thought, to put into the water, that girls liked. He was happy when his sister told him to stay and eat with them. He clearly tried not to stare at Natalie, but she was so pretty, and he could see that she wasn't wearing anything except a sheet around her body. As his sister and Natalie were chatting and giggling, while eating bacon, eggs, sausages and bread, while drinking coffee, the sheet became more loose sliding down off her shoulders and chest.

"Henry!" Jess spoke out loudly waking him from his trance. He quickly learned where Mr. Landon was housed, which was the closest the City of Cheyenne had to a manor-like house. Already at a distance he could see the house had armed guards, at strategic positions and a couple of men walking up and down the streets and alleyways near the house. It was clear to Seth that this was a precaution from what had transpired last night. However rich and powerful you are, if there is a bullet with your name on it, your time is up. Mr. Landon had enough money and power to put other's bodies in between himself and any bullets that might be seeking him out, be it purposely or by accident. Mr. Landon hadn't reached this point in his life believing in coincidences or leaving matters up to chance. Luck was a factor he respected, he hated it, but knew it was a thing, but his experience had shown that frequently the guy with most guns had better luck.

Seth didn't expect any problems going to the house, but he might be checked out. But luck would have it that as he was approaching the house the Sheriff was coming out of the main door and before anyone could approach Seth and tell him to stop, the Sheriff loudly called out to all present to let him pass.

The two men greeted each other with an appropriate raising of their hats. They exchanged a few pleasantries, and Sheriff was amused at how he now so frequently met Seth. He smiled at Seth nodding towards the bouquet like he was acknowledging the merit and value of the choice to bring Mrs. Landon flowers after the unnerving event. After tipping their hats again in a jovial farewell, the Sheriff parted and the servant that was letting out the Sheriff had stayed in the door, realizing that the newcomer would likely be welcomed inside anyway.

Seth gave his name to the servant and explained that he and Mr. Landon had become acquainted the previous night, and that Seth was here to see how the Landons both were faring, mostly Mrs. Landon. Seth gave the bouquet to the servant who went inside and announced the guest.

"Seth come right in" Mr. Landon called out in a strong voice that made Seth guess that he at a time probably had been an officer in the military, either as a young Army officer, or maybe briefly as a Confederate officer, as many rich men had started out their wealth through slavery. Mr. Landon got up to greet Seth with a strong handshake and Seth took his hat off as he shook his hand and then turned to Mrs. Landon and bowed respectfully while hoping both had come after the event of the previous night.

Mrs. Landon quickly thanked him for the flowers and asked how Natalie was doing. Seth exaggerated it slightly to how it had affected Natalie and quickly Mrs. Landon did as Seth had hoped. She told her husband that she insisted they invite Seth and Natalie to dinner the coming Saturday. Mr. Landon hesitated a moment but readily agreed, having come to see Seth as having some of the same qualities he had had when he was younger. As he was there, Mrs. Landon insisted that Seth stay a moment for a cup of tea.

It wasn't long before noon when Seth was bid good day and the servant let him out. Seth went by the tailor store to order another fancy gown made for Natalie and new clothes including another shirt for himself. He arrived at the hotel and the proprietor, Mr. Greer, smiled at him and said that the tray with lunch for three would be ready momentarily. Seth had himself what he felt was a well-deserved whisky while he waited and then took the tray and carried it upstairs.

He knocked on the door to their room and heard giggling, then Natalie replied that he should wait a couple of minutes. Natalie opened the door just wearing her undergarments while Jess was finishing getting fully dressed. Jess flushed red but smiled and curtsied him. He placed the tray on the table and both girls started to eat both with a great appetite and Seth laughed loudly amused at how the two petite young women ate like they had had a long morning of hard labor. He let the two girls chat and took a plate with him to the balcony and observed the street while he ate his lunch.

Revenge and sinister plans indeed, he thought to himself.

First, I would like to thank all that gives me feedback positive or negative. I really appreciate the comments I get, and where I of course like praise as much as the next person, I am in every way an amateur in writing and trying to learn, so negative comments aid me as well.

I have had a few say that my language isn't the best and that I should proofread better, get an editor to help. And I agree on all points, I have written volunteer editors here and as soon as I find one or more willing to aid me, I will use that option.

But for the time being, I will just keep sending out a chapter or so every week, or if I can do more, in the fashion I have done so far.

I am from Denmark, English is my second language, and aside from what is like High School in the 80s I only have my education as an Army Officer, so bear with me with my grammar.

Lastly, the length of my chapters. I try to keep my chapters approximately the same length, have for the two on-going stories I have now. 2500-3500 words, with a chapter here and there becoming slightly longer. I will keep writing at the length I have so far but if many find that unsatisfactory, let me know in the comments.
