Another Time in the West

The sun was rising when Seth exited the hotel. He calmly walked down the street life slowly coming alive in the streets and houses as he walked toward the Sheriff's office. He arrived at the same time as the Sheriff himself and greeted him, telling him why he was here. He explained about the brawl the night before at the saloon, the Sheriff having not been alerted by this, since it wasn't really a big deal. But Seth came here to get to know the Sheriff and to be ahead of things regarding the guy they arrested for having been ready to attack from behind with a knife. Seth knew enough to not volunteer too much information and just stated the facts that the Sheriff could discover himself by asking around. No need to start talking about towns, cities, names or anything that might start lines of inquiry that can only lead to trouble.

Seth accepted invitation to come inside so the Sheriff could get his briefing from the deputies that had been on duty since the night before. Seth accepted a cup of coffee and listened to the briefing without showing that he took in every detail. This was exactly why he had come this morning. He learned a lot about the deputies, and the Sheriff himself. As Seth was listening to the briefing, the real target of his attention arrived as if he was to be on duty for the day. Seth made a point of getting friendly with the Sheriff when he was done with the briefing and giving orders for the day. He then proceeded to join the Sheriff as they went to see the arrested that was sleeping out his drunken state in the City Jail. Seth left shortly after seeing the arrested released and invited the Sheriff for a whisky if he should be by the hotel one night. For a long time, he had known what he wanted, to find the justice, the vengeance for his family that had been unanswered for too long. He had never really thought about what would come afterwards. He did now, he could see himself starting a life with Natalie.

Seth returned to the hotel, ordered breakfast send to the room and headed up the stairs. He could hear Natalie splashing in the water and chatting, so he guessed the girl was still there. She asked if they could stay a few more days here or if they would be back in Cheyenne City and at this hotel. They went for a walk, going to the train station first to learn when trains were scheduled for Laramie City and when trains would be returning the same way. They went by the tailoring shop and Natalie got to order another couple of dresses on a more daily basis and other gowns to wear when going out on the town. She looked at hats, shoes and everything nice. They go by a general store and Natalie finds numerous things she asks Seth to buy, and he seems reluctant or unable to refuse her. They must have the ordered items from both stores delivered to their room at the hotel, too much for Seth to carry.

They then went for a walk around the city checking the train as it arrived to see passengers getting off and on. Natalie was very curious about it, and so excited that she was to take her first trip on a train soon. Seth was mostly silent, having come to realize how much more comfortable it would be if they had riches. He was sure the real culprit was a very rich and powerful man high in Wyoming society and if Seth and Natalie had been able to frequent this part of society it would make the search much faster and a whole lot easier.

But riches weren't the only thing that could get the attention of the rich and powerful. Making it rich would take too long, or Seth would have to turn to crime, and he wasn't prepared to make innocent victims of families in his pursuit. He looked at Natalie and smiled at how beautiful and perfect she looked. The came upon a little store owned by a Chinese man and Seth greeted him in Chinese. The Chinese was suspicious at first but when Seth proceeded to speak a little Chinese and asked to the man's business. The Chinese man happily replied and soon turned out to be a fountain of news and information. The store mostly dealt in powders, ointments and strange smelling things but the wife of the Chinese man cooked and sold food too. Mostly Chinese came here for food but Seth suggested they give it a go. Natalie could smell it and found the smell very nice and agreed. They each got a bowl with rice, meat and vegetables, plus chopsticks to eat it with. "I do hope I get to see my mother again" Natalie said for the first time missing her mother and feeling the distance to her home. Seth smiled and told her that when it all was over, he thought that they should find her mother and take her along with them and maybe go settle in California or somewhere on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Natalie smiled and had tears down her cheeks, as she leaned over and kissed him, before slowly dismounting Seth and wrapping herself in a towel and walking to the balcony to dry off in the late afternoon sun.
