The next few days passed in a blur.
It was Monday, and I'd just received a disappointed side-eye from Professor Barnett while I hurriedly scribbled nonsense onto my homework scroll, hoping for at least the completion-based half-credit before she collected it.
It had been three days since I had convinced Emma to sign up for Winter Ladder. I had dropped everything over the weekend to bury my head in Water magic combat theory with her.
That had, accidentally, included my homework assignment for Intermediate Metaphysical Healing.
Emma's sweet and bubbly demeanor hid a competitive streak you'd never guess was there - if I hadn't seen it once during card game club. She also had a strong desire to not be embarrassed in front of the entire school.
"Rin, as the person whobasicallyforced me into this," Emma had said, "let me tell you something. If I show up, get eliminated in three seconds by an underclassman, and become a meme on the Aquaspire notice board, you willneversee me naked again."
So we had strategized away the entire weekend. By the end of it all, my head was swimming, but I had learned a lot and we both felt like we had made some solid battle plans. Since I had known next-to-nothing about Water magic combat, Emma had given me a crash course on the basics to start. The first thing I learned was that there are three popular fighting specializations of Water mages.
The first and most common was Hydrobulking. This was a simple concept - take large volumes of water and use it as a weapon of mass and momentum. Think tidal waves, giant whips of water, or just straight up blasting people with a firehose from Atlantis. Bulkers tended to lean defensive, carefully using shield walls of water to bide their time because launching a massive, exhausting, brute-force counterattack. The tradeoff was that they burned through mana and energy like crazy and their fine, technical control was usually lacking. Khalil, Emma's housemate who had offered me tea the first time I visited, and who I had gotten to know better over the weekend, was this type of Water mage.
The second was Cryomancy - ice users. These mages were the most versatile, capable of both solid offense and defense equally. They did everything you might imagine on attack: ice blades, spikes, needles, freezing mists and piercing beams. On defense, they usually went with simple but effective ice walls, or even freezing themselves temporarily in solid blocks of ice to stall, catch their breath, and plan out their next move. This was Emma's weakest area of Water magic. It was also the preferred style of Celine, the most powerful Water mage in school and Crown team captain. She was not only the number one ranked Water mage, but also one of the top five highest leveled students in our grade. She was the same level as I was, 46. By all accounts, Celine was the overwhelming favorite to win Water Ladder.
And then there was the third Water discipline: Shearing.
Thiswas Emma's speciality.
Shearers compressed water into razor-fine flying blades that were launched fast enough for them to become cutting weapons. Another popular technique was shooting thin, high-velocity jets that hit like lasers. Think waterjet cutters in a machine shop, except powered by magic. It was an extremely aggressive and offensive style, but usually carried with it rather poor defense.
I had helped Emma flesh out some of her attacking combos and gameplans against each archetype of Water mage she might face. Obviously, as the one whoactuallyhad deep knowledge about Water magic, Emma was the one who did the heavy lifting - I was mostly there as a sounding board for her to think out loud against. But I'd also helped dig up books on more exotic techniques and done some of the research legwork, so I wasn'tentirelydead weight.
She was going to do great. I was sure of it.
By the end of that horrible class, Barnett had cold-called methreetimes, knowing full well I didn't do the reading or the homework properly.
"Damn thatsucked," I complained to Eugene, Logan, and Bailey as we filed out of the lecture hall. "Why'd she have to do me like that? You know I'm literally one of her favorite students... you'd think she'd give me some leeway because of that."
"Hmm," Eugene responded, "you may have dropped a few spots on her favorites list after that one."
"Thanks buddy. Observant as always."
"You know, I didn't do the homework either for today," Logan jumped in. "Barnett didn't really seem to care as much though."
Bailey snorted. "Yeah because that would be like getting upset that a used Subaru can't do 150 on the highway."
"Hey! Shove off!" Logan reached with his foot to trip her and Bailey cackled as she dodged.
Well... she had a point. All of the teachers held me to a rather high standard as the number-one Life mage. Oh God... and Arcanometrics was next...
"Ah fuck. You guys go ahead," I told my friends. "I'm gonna skip lunch. I gotta do Hadid's problem sets."
"Dude, you're gonna skip lasagna?" Bailey asked, as if I had just announced I was dropping out of school. It was true, Ilovedlasagna, even if it was a second-rate school cafeteria rendition.
"I know, I know. You saw how Barnett reamed me though. I don't even wanna know what Hadid would do."
Eugene adjusted his glasses. "Do you want us to save you anything?"
"No, no, it's fine. I have classes through to dinner anyways. Go live your best lives."
As I split off from them and mentally resigned myself to magical mathematics and a styrofoam cup of artificial beef flavoring, I heard Logan's voice fade down the hallway behind me.
"'Live your best lives?' Does he know that no one other than him actually likes the school lasagna?"
You know, some battles just aren't worth fighting.

I pushed open the door to Room 307 and-
"Are you fucking serious right now?"
Because there, sitting in my chair, chewing onmygum - I could literally see the pack opened on my nightstand - was none other than Sadie Spencer.
She raised both hands. "Before you start-"
"What? No. Get out. You know, I was actually giving you credit, you know that? I was thinking, 'Hey, at least she had the decency to call off the Brooke thing and then not immediately show up expecting a thank you.' Now here you are."
Sadie didn't fire back or anything. She just sat there, hands folded, with an expression that I could only describe as... vulnerable?
That did make me pause.
"Please," she said quietly. "Just hear me out. Five minutes. And I'll go. And I won't try to talk to you again unless you reach out first."
Hm.
"Fine," I said, crossing my arms. "Five minutes."
Sadie took a slow breath. She looked down at the floor as she began.
"I'm sorry, Rin. I really, really am. Not just for what I told Brooke to do, and not just so we can smooth things over and go back to how things were. I'm sorry for everything, and I want to make a real apology."
She found the courage to meet my eyes. There was not a shade of manipulation or insincerity in them, as far as I could tell.
"But yes, for starters, Iamsorry for trying to control who could talk to you. It's like you said - I had no right. It was selfish and manipulative. But you also made me realize that- that-"
Her voice cracked.
"Fuck... I was so cruel to you. I know we already talked about it... kinda... but I'm sorry for- for watching people treat you like garbage of years, for joining in, just so I could- dammit Rin I'm so sorry."
Was that a tear forming in her eye?
"And now I understand that when you finally had a chance to stop being at the bottom of the totem pole, I tried to put a leash on it so I could benefit. Thatisfucked up. I know that."
I didn't respond. She pressed on.
"I'm not saying all this because I expect you to forgive me. Or because I want anything from you. I just..." She faltered and stopped holding my gaze. "Our confrontation, it forced me to reflect on all of this - on the kind of person I've been - it's made me see myself in a way I really didn't enjoy. And I realized that I don't want to be that person anymore. No one's really made me answer for it before like you did. So... thank you. And again, I'm truly sorry."
She stood up from the chair shakily.
"Okay. I said everything I have to say. I'll go. I won't show up again. I won't talk to you unless you reach out first."
She moved toward the door.
The words were right. The tone was right. But I had been burned before.
And yet.
"Sadie. Do you remember the day we found out we were sorcerers?"
She turned. A tear was rolling. "Of course."
Of course. They'd called us both to the office at school, and we traded nervous looks in the hallway all the way down. Did they find our trashed notes making fun of Mr. Porter's wig? But when we got there, our parents, the principal, and a smiling man in a tweed suit with the Syldan crest were all beaming at us. The words had barely come out of his mouth before Sadie just shattered. She didn't even make it to her mom before the tears started. That was the only time I'd seen her cry - and those were at least half happy tears.
Now...
"Come sit down," I said.
She did, this time facing me on the edge of Eugene's bed. She sniffed and composed herself slightly.
I sighed.
"I believe that you meant what you said. And Iwantto forgive you. I do. I don't know if I can truthfully say I fully forgive you foreverythingright now, but I want to. And I think the fact that I want to means something. That's all I can say for now."
"Thank you, Rin. That's more than I deserve."
"Probably," I agreed. "Probably."
And then there was silence. A bit of silence as we just sat there and contemplated. Our past was so complex, so strange. Could we start again? At the time I didn't know, and when I don't know what to do or say and my own brain gets a bit overwhelmed, well, that's when myrealmagical powers of making jokes in emotionally charged moments take the wheel...
"Well... this is actually kind of awkward... want to go back to hating each other?"
Sadie stared at me incredulously. But I wasn't done.
"Also, I mean you were a dick to me for 5 years. But... I guess we became friends when we were seven though, so technically you were nice to me for 6 years..."
Sadie hesitated, holding a twitching lip. Her eyes scanned my face, as if she were trying to gauge if she could laugh or not. She must have found what she needed - or the dam just broke - because she let out a shaky laugh, then another, bigger one, and I couldn't help it - I laughed too. "Damn," she breathed, wiping her cheeks, "thankyoumister math genius, for that incredible contribution."
"Hey you know me, I'm the best Arcanometrics B-student you'll ever meet."
She snorted. "So I'm one year in the green right? So does that mean..."
"Don't youdare!"
She grinned and we fell into silence again, but it was comfortable this time. I broke it eventually. "So look, I know Ladder is soon and we should probably get back to work on-"
But remarkably, Sadie cut me off. "Rin, it's okay. To tell you the truth, our fight was the first time in weeks I've been stressed about something more than Ladder." She paused. "And I want to be clear - I don't expect anything from you. I don't want this to feel... transactional. At all. That's not why I came here."
I sat with that for a second. "Okay. That actually means a lot coming from you." She nodded, looking relieved. "But," I said, "I'm still going to help you. It just makes sense. We were doing good work."
Sadie tilted her head and smirked. "Mhm. You miss our 'research.'"
"I hate Jasper."
"Oh youmissour research."
"Okay, fine, I miss our research! But I also hate Jasper. You have to beat him, Sadie. What an insufferable prick."
Sadie laughed. "Oh, I will. Trust me." But then her expression turned a bit mischievous. "So anyways," she said, "I was hoping that this would be how it all turned out because..."
"Uh oh"
"...I actually have something for you. A gift, if you will."
"Okay...?"
Sadie walked to my window and shoved it open. She stuck her head out and scanned the grounds below, swiveling her head, searching. "Dammit," she muttered, "why is she sitting all the way over there..."
"Who-"
"Hang on."
And then Sadie disappeared. Not completely - I could still see her as a faint, distorted outline, but it was high-level adaptive camouflage. Some very core Obscurant magic. I noticed a further ripple as a second nearly-invisible Sadie stepped out of her like a reflection peeling off a mirror. The illusion dropped out the window. I looked down and could definitely no longer see the camouflaged clone from three floors up.
"What are you-"
"Shh. Patience."
About ten seconds later, Sadie abruptly uncamouflaged herself beside me. At the same time, so did the clone, and I could now see it near a bench. As it walked past, a hooded figure startled and shot to their feet. I felt Sadie relax next to me and the illusion blinked out of existence.
"Okay, who is that? Why does my gift require an accomplice?"
"Justwait. You'll see."
"On another note," I said, frowning, "is this how you've been getting into my room? Fuck, I should really fix that window lock."
Sadie only arched her eyebrow at me in response. Suddenly, a hand shot up and grabbed the window frame with a whoosh of air. I stumbled back.
"What the hell-"
A moment later, a tall figure rolled through the window in an athletic tumble. Her hood fell off and red hair tumbled past her shoulders. A tight-fitting sweatshirt did absolutely nothing to conceal one of the best racks at Syldan.
It was Sage. Sadie's cheerleader and Air mage friend.
"Hey there," Sage waved sultrily at me, "Corin, right? Sadie has told meallabout you, special guy..."
I mean, she did just knock me on my ass with a wind blast in the courtyard just a few weeks ago... but I wouldn't fault her for not remembering me. I probably didn't want her to, anyways.
"Hi Sage... Sadie, what's this?"
But I think I knew...
Sadie leaned against the wall, looking enormously pleased with herself. "Oh I think you know..."
I looked at Sage, who looked right back at me with absolutely no shame. "So just to be clear," she said, "I know you haven't figured out the whole Nymphomancy thing yet. And I really don't care about that part - not right now, anyway. I don't need a power boost or anything."
That actually made some sense. Sage was no top student or Crown aspirant. She was as mediocre an Air mage as they made them, and she seemed perfectly content with it.
She gave me an indecent smile and continued.
"I'm interested in the other part. I'm looking for some good dick that I can rely on to get the job done. So when you do figure it out? I want you to remember who showed up for you early. Deal?"
"Deal," I managed.
"Okay," Sadie snapped her fingers, "why don't you make yourself comfortable?"
My brain was still playing catch-up, but my body was several steps ahead. I was sitting on the edge of the mattress, and before I could even process it, Sadie and Sage advanced on me and knelt on the floor. The sheer anticipation of what was about to happen sent pure lust rampaging through me, and my cock ballooned to full, throbbing attention without even the slightest touch.
Sadie smirked at my immediate bulge. "He's always been an overachiever." Her hands went to my jeans, and a moment later she'd unzipped me, pulling them and my boxers down and off. My erection sprang free, slick with precum pooling at the tip.
While Sage gathered her long red hair and expertly tied it into a high ponytail, Sadie leaned forward. Her tongue darted out, tracing a slow circle around the head of my cock, slurping up the amuse-bouche. She gave it a light suck, just warming me up.
Then Sage leaned in, her lips parting, and took over from Sadie. Her tongue swirled as her mouth closed over me, her technique being less teasing and more direct, going straight into light up and down bobs.
And before long, Sadie leaned in from the right and licked up my shaft. Sage got the idea and shifted to the other side. My world evaporated into pure sexual bliss as the two athletic beauties sandwiched my cock between their mouths. They worked in hypnotic rhythm, moving sloppily up and down my shaft with their lips and tongues, then alternating their rhythm, then licking up on my tip, and down to my scrotum.
After a while, Sadie moved lower to focus on my balls while Sage took my entire length in her mouth, her throat bulging as she swallowed me down without too much issue. Sadie's wet tongue slid warmly around my scrotum, and she occasionally would roll me around gently in her mouth. All the while, Sage continued to deepthroat me like a practiced professional. They way they moved in perfect sync - I could only wonder if they'd done this before. The combined sensations were too much, and the building wave in my groin threatened to end this daydream far too early.
"Whoa, wait," I gasped, my hips starting to buck. "Please, stop-"
They both pulled back, leaving my spit-slick cock twitching in the air. Sadie let out a knowing laugh.
"Just... just give me like two seconds," I breathed, willing the wave away.
"One... two!" Sage quipped. "Now... you wanna see something cool?"
Before I could answer, she held her hand out, palm cupped towards me. I felt a tingling current, and then a firm, invisible grip closed around me. It was like a ghost's hand, semi-solid and soft. My cock was squeezed and stroked with a gentle rhythm. I groaned, my head falling back as the Air magic handjob (airjob?) continued with perfectly even-spread pressure.
It was a unique sight. My cock looked like it was quivering without being touched in the air, my shaft and skin moving on its own accord. I was entranced by the sight. Just as my control started to slip again, Sage granted me a small mercy and let the currents dissipate. But Sadie immediately took their place, swallowing me whole once more. She began to slowly work me deeper. Unlike Sage, she always had to ease herself into taking me fully into her throat.
While Sadie got back to work, Sage sat up and pulled her tight sweatshirt and top over her head, followed quickly by unclasping her bra and allowing her pair of full D-cups to spill free. I was completely mesmerized by the sight of her big pale pillows. Sage giggled silently and pressed a finger to her lips. She had a naughty gleam in her eyes.
I faintly registered a light breeze that flowed around Sadie and my cock. Then, a sudden strong gust of air slammed her head down, forcing my cock past her throat barrier instantly. Sadie's eyes flew wide and she let out a choked gag before breaking away, spluttering.
"F-ack-fuck you!" she coughed, glaring at Sage.
Sage just cackled. "You looked like you needed a little help!"
With a triumphant grin, Sage crawled up towards me, her heavy breasts swaying with the movement. Then, she captured my rigid cock, pre-lubed with Sadie's spit, between their soft weight. She began to slide up and down. Decadance. As she gave me my first titjob, Sadie recovered and rejoined the fun, her fingers finding my balls and lightly caressing and rolling them.
