Learning Together 03 - Backseat Heat

The day before leaving for vacation

Stephanie's thumb hovered over the screen. The words sat there, blunt and heavy.

We need to talk.

They weren't wrong. Just... premature. She'd deleted them, stared a moment longer, then locked her phone and set it face down on the nightstand. Something in her gut wouldn't settle.

Needing to move, Stephanie got up and paced around her room, before ducking into the bathroom, locking the door, and pressing her palm to her chest.

He did notice. Or at least, he suspected. And if dad was even halfway right, mom wouldn't stay in denial for long, she thought

Her mind raced back through every glance, every slip. The stolen moments. The smirk Jeff had given her when mom asked if they were "getting along." The lingering touch when he passed her the cereal. The night he'd come home late from a friend's and whispered something filthy in her ear right in the hallway.

God, they'd been careless. She knew better. She already felt like what they'd been doing was pushing things too far.

She splashed cold water on her face and stared at her reflection. She looked exhausted and stressed, pulse hammering her throat.

No more risks.

Right. That had lasted all of thirty minutes.

Back in her room, her phone buzzed again. Her little brother.

Jeff: You up?

She stared at the screen. Thought about what she'd overheard. About the way dad had saidwe need to know. As if he were already preparing for the worst.

Her fingers trembled as she typed, reevaluating her decision to wait to tell him tomorrow.

Stephanie: Come to my room

This time, she hit send.

There was a light knock at her door. Two short taps, then silence. Stephanie swept over and cracked it open. Jeff stood there in a t-shirt and loose athletic shorts.

She stepped aside without saying a word, letting him slip in, brushing her shoulder on the way past.

Having shut the door as quietly as she could, for a second, neither moved.

"You okay?" he asked, turning, while his eyes scanned her face.

"I just needed to clear my head." Stephanie nodded.

"You've been weird the last few hours."

"I wasn't going to say anything tonight. I didn't want to freak you out and have you act weird when you saw dad again tomorrow," she eventually responded, after a slight hesitation.

"Say anything about what?" Jeff asked with a confused look.

"I overheard something earlier," she said. "Before dad took off."

"Okay... what'd he say?" he questioned, with a shrug his shoulders after waiting for her to continue.

Stephanie crossed her arms. "He said something's off. Like, we're acting different around each other."

Jeff smirked and took a step closer. "Well... we kinda are."

"I'm serious."

He shrugged again. "He's just guessing. It's not like he caught us, or anything."

"He mentioned your swimsuit when we came inside. Said that there was a wet spot... there," she said waiving her finger towards his groin.

"He also brought up my bikini. And that I had streaks of something on the back," she was looking at him exasperatedly.

Jeff just laughed. "I didn't see anything, and I'd think I'd notice if my cum was all over your ass, so I don't know what he's talking about."

"Yeah, well, you're not exactly the most observant in those moments. And the blanket," she added. "The other night when we were watching that movie. He said we looked 'too close.'"

Jeff just gave her a face. "Okay, so he's watching us now. Creepy, but it's fine."

Stephanie stared at him, arms crossed. "He's not watching. He'snoticing...That's worse!" she finished, exasperated at his lack of concern.

After taking a second to look in her eyes for a moment, he stepped closer, closing the distance between them. His arms slid around his sister, tugging her into his chest, in a comforting hug.

She didn't resist. For a second, it felt good to be held by him, like they could pause the chaos and just breathe.

Then his hands started to drift. First along her lower back, then slipping down, to inch beneath the hem of her shirt. His lips brushed the top of her head.

"You're overthinking it," he whispered. "We just need to be more careful."

His hands slid lower, resting her just inside the waistband of her shorts.

"Jeff," she said sharply, twisting in his grip. "That's not careful."

He kissed her neck. "You let me in your room."

"I let you in to talk."

He pulled back slightly, enough to meet her eyes, but not enough to let go. "You're always saying we need to be smart, and I'm fine with that, but you can't keep acting like you don't want this."

"Idowant this," she snapped, more than she meant to. "But not when dad thinks we're already fucking in the living room."

Jeff blinked, then grinned. "Okay...thatpart we didn't do, but if he already thinks it, and you're up for it-"

She gave him a shove. "Jeff!"

"Alright, alright." He raised his hands in surrender, but still looking way too amused.

Stephanie crossed the room and opened the door a few inches. "Go," she hissed, keeping her voice low enough so mom wouldn't hear.

"Now?" he asked, like he hadn't expected her to actually mean it.

"Yes, now! And be quiet. Also, the next time I say we need to talk, don't treat it like foreplay," she finished, stepping away from the door and out of his reach for him to leave.

He stepped out, still smirking, but his voice dropped as he grabbed the doorhandle to close it. "I'll be quiet next time. You won't even hear me come in," he said with a wag of his eyebrows.

Seeing her grab a notebook in preparation to throw at him, he closed the door quickly with a laugh.

Stephanie stood at the kitchen counter, scooping chia seeds into her yogurt bowl, then slicing half a banana over the top. Her water bottle sat next to her phone, beads of condensation trailing down the side.

Mom rinsed out a mug at the sink. "Dad left early," she said as if to no one in particular. "Didn't even finish his smoothie."

Stephanie nodded, focused on her breakfast.

"Your brother still asleep?" she asked, Stephanie.

"Probably," Stephanie said. "His door was closed."

Mom gave a small shake of her head. "That boy could sleep through an earthquake."

Stephanie managed a smile and stirred absently before taking a bite.

They sat in silence for a moment with mom sipping her coffee at the table, and Stephanie perched on a stool at the island. For Stephanie it felt like something was still hanging in the air. As though mom was trying to build up to something, but didn't know how to say it.

Then mom spoke again. "You two seem... closer lately."

Stephanie's pulse picked up.

She kept her eyes on her bowl. "He's getting ready for college now, so we have some new things to talk about. I guess that happens." She tried to sound calm even though her stomach was tight from wondering where the conversation may be going.

Her mom hummed, casual on the surface. "I've just noticed things lately. How you look at each other. The way you talk. It's nice, I think. I wasn't sure you two would ever get along as well as you seem to these days."

Stephanie took a sip from her water bottle to buy a few seconds.

"I mean," mom continued, "you're both attractive, smart, young. I just always hoped you'd be out there starting your life. Finding your future husband, or something."

That pulled Stephanie's eyes up. "What does that mean?"

Mom smiled, but it didn't quite seem genuine. "Well, I met your dad when he was in college, so I guess I figured you'd..." she trailed off, knowing Stephanie was to invested in her school and gymnastics to be looking for her future husband yet. "Nothing. Just me being a mom. Ignore me," she finished with a sigh.

Stephanie gave a courtesy laugh. "Well, we may get along, but he still leaves breakfast bar wrappers everywhere and doesn't clean up behind himself. So he's still my annoying little brother. I just tolerate him more because at least now I can talk to him about stuff other than his video games."

"So, nothing's changed, then," she replied with a full smile.

Stephanie nodded, even as her chest felt tight.

"Nope. He's still annoying," she said forcing a smile.

Mom stood and grabbed her bag. "I've got a few errands to run. You want anything from the store?"

"I'm good."

As she walked to the door, keys jingling in her hand, she paused.

"You know I trust you, right?"

Stephanie froze. "Yeah. Of course."

Mom gave her a long look, as though she were searching her face. Then she nodded and stepped out.

The moment the front door shut, Stephanie let out a breath and sank back, feeling the island press into her back as she melted into the stool, her spoon resting in her half-eaten bowl. If mom hadn't seen anything yet, she was definitely paying attention now too.

Stephanie's phone screen had gone dark again. The same group text from her friends still sat unread, and her book might as well have been in another language. She'd tried lying on her bed, sitting at her desk, even pacing. Nothing helped. Her mind kept looping back to her dad's voice, mom's long stare, the way the tension in the kitchen seemed thick, as though his words had gotten to mom and now, she was wondering after all.

They hadn't been caught, but she felt like they were dangerously close, and it didn't feel so much like a thrill anymore. It felt like waiting for the floor to give out.

She sat on the floor now, back against the side of her bed, knees pulled up, book open in her lap. She hadn't turned a page in ten minutes. When the soft knock came, her head barely lifted.

Jeff didn't wait for a response. He opened the door and leaned against the frame. "You hiding?"

Stephanie didn't look at him right away. "No, I'm not hiding," she said. "Just... avoiding."

He stepped a little inside, wearing his socks, mesh shorts, and a T-shirt, looking like he'd been parked in front of his screen for a while. His hair was tousled like he'd run his hands through it half a dozen times as he does when he gets frustrated with a team online.

"Avoiding what?" he asked gently.

"Everything."

He tilted his head. "Want me to leave?"

She shook her head. "No."

That was enough. He came closer, and dropped down beside her without waiting for an invite. They sat shoulder to shoulder, legs bent, the book forgotten between them. For a moment, neither spoke.

"I get it," Jeff said finally. "Dad's been... weird."

Stephanie snorted. "That's one word for it."

"I didn't mean to make things worse last night," he added, softer now. "You just looked like you needed a laugh or something."

She didn't respond to his words, just sat there staring at the floor in front of her.

"Steph," he said, turning to face her a little more. "Do you regret any of it?"

"No," she said, looking up at him with sadness in her eyes.

"Then what are you scared of?"

She gave a small, humorless laugh. "That it's not going to stop, but we should."

Jeff frowned. "What do you mean?"

"This. Us. Sneaking around. I feel like we should stop, but I don't actually want to. It's just that... I'm scared it's just going to keep going until someone gets hurt."

He let that sit. Then reached out and gently took the book from her lap, closing it and setting it aside. His hand lingered at her knee.

"Then let's stop thinking for a second," he said. "Just... sit here with me."

Stephanie still didn't answer, but she also didn't stop him when he leaned closer either, or when his fingers brushed up her thigh. When his lips met hers, there wasn't the usual rush. Instead, she just felt an affection that asked nothing from her except to stay close. It was the first time all day she didn't feel alone and in her head.

Her hand slid to his jaw, then into his hair. Their mouths opened, tongues meeting in a deeper kiss. She shifted, half-turning into his lap, and the sensation of his body beneath hers comforted her in a way nothing else could. He was warm, solid, familiar, the brother who'd always been there for her. After gymnastics meets, fights with friends, or just a bad day, he was the one who showed up.

But as her hips pressed closer, the comfort ignited something deeper. That burn she felt for him hadn't faded since the night of their so-called practice date - the night everything changed. It was in the way he looked at her, the way his hands moved when he was being careful. It was the sense that, when he held her and whispered the right words, everything really might be okay. And that, more than anything, was why she didn't want to stop, even when she knew they probably should.

Jeff's hand cupped her side, slid under the hem of her shirt, then up, pausing just beneath her bra. Stephanie whimpered softly against his mouth. Her legs unfolded and she turned, moving toward his lap, straddling him with her knees on the carpet.

"Steph," he breathed, his voice low now, nearly reverent.

"I know," she whispered. "Just... for a minute."

Jeff had no idea how long they'd been kissing, only that feel of her on his lap made it impossible to think straight. Stephanie's arms had wrapped around his neck, her mouth soft and hungry against his, and her hips were moving just enough to drive him insane.

It all caused him to be turned on, but it was also about how close she felt. How his sister's body fit against his like it was supposed to be there. His hands moved up under her shirt again, more confident this time, palms sliding along the warm skin of her back until he found the clasp of her bra.

The fact that she didn't stop him encouraged him to press forward and unhook it. He felt her breath catch in his mouth when he slid his hands around to the front, he ran his thumbs under the curve of her breasts, just barely touching them. It was enough to make her shift again in his lap though.

"Steph..." he breathed, as both a warning and a plea.

Her forehead rested against his. She didn't answer right away. Her chest rose and fell against his hands, and for a moment it felt like neither of them was breathing properly.

Then her hands moved to his wrists, bringing them to a halt.

The sound of his tone, when he whispered her name, had brought her back to their reality.

"Don't," she whispered.

Jeff froze.

"I want to," she added quickly. "God, I want to. But if you touch me... I won't stop."

He nodded, with a groan, still holding her just below her breasts. The feel of them resting in the crook between his thumb and finger.

"Okay. I get it."

"I just needed this moment with you," she murmured, burying her face into his neck.

He slid his hands away from beneath her loose hanging bra, letting his arms wrap fully around her instead. They locked around her back, pulling her into a firm hug. She melted into him, chest to chest, her forehead resting against his. They weren't kissing anymore. Just holding. Her weight settled over him, the feeling of care washing over them both as their breathing slowly evened out.

From the hallway, a door clicked shut. Maybe their parents' bedroom, or the linen closet. But the sound jolted Stephanie all the same.

Her head snapped up. "My door-" she whispered, already starting to scramble off his lap.

His arms tightened around his sister. "Wait-"

"Jeff, my door's still open-" Her voice rose in a panic, but he didn't let go.

"Just a few more seconds," he said, grinning even as she fought against his hold.

She pushed at his chest. "Are you insane?"

He laughed softly, still holding her close. "Relax. It was just the bathroom door, in their room."

She froze, her breath caught halfway out. Then, slowly, she relaxed again, slumping against him.

She smiled against her brother's shoulder, then let out a sigh so deep it seemed to carry all of the tension from her limbs.

"I'm scared we're going to screw everything up," she said softly.

"Well, you're supposed to be the voice of reason," Jeff said, his hand moving to the back of her head. "But jeez... one little kiss from me and you climb right into my lap."

That made her laugh before she sat up, brushing hair from her face. "Shut up."

She shifted to climb off him, and as she did, his hand slid down for a quick squeeze of her ass.

"Jeff," she said firmly, giving him a look of warning, with just a hint of a smile cracking through.

"What? It's a reflex! I mean, it's built into a guy that when he sees an ass that nice, he has to touch it."

"I need to do a couple of things before dinner," she said, fully standing and shaking her head before stretching.

Jeff didn't argue. He just looked at her, unable to look away as she raised her arms overhead, her back arching as only a gymnast's could. He couldn't help but notice the subtle ripple of muscle beneath her skin, the easy, unconscious flexibility that always reminded him she'd been an athlete most of her life.

"I'm serious. Go," she hissed.

He stood, adjusting his erection with no effort to hide the gesture, flashing his crooked smile. "You're lucky I have self-control."

"Is that what we're calling me kicking you out, now? You having self-control?" she asked, raising a brow.

"Close enough," he said, stepping into the hallway. "Seriously, you've gotta stop stretching like that in front of me, if you want me to leave next time."

She shut the door in his face, but not before he caught the smirk she was trying to not let him see.

The sound of pans clattering in the kitchen greeted her as she came downstairs. Mom had already laid out some of the groceries they'd be packing for the lake. Jeff's water bottle sat on the counter, half full, a ring of condensation spreading beneath it.

Stephanie moved to the island. The air felt different, but she couldn't dismiss that maybe it was just her overthinking.

She nodded toward the bottle. "Jeff's always leaving stuff around."

The comment was casual, an attempt to reinforce the idea that he still got on her nerves, even if they'd been getting along lately.

"Hey," mom said brightly. "You got your things sorted?"

Stephanie nodded, peeling the wrapper slowly. "Mostly. I tried to not pack half my closet. Figured I'd leave a little room for everyone else to bring stuff too."

"Smart girl. We all appreciate you consideration for others," mom chuckled.

Jeff appeared a few seconds later, barefoot, raking a hand through his hair. "So what time are we leaving tomorrow?"

"Early," dad answered, walking in from the hallway. "I want to beat the rush."

Jeff gave a noncommittal head bob. "Cool."

Their dad looked between them. "You two seem to be getting along really well lately."

Stephanie glanced at Jeff with a mock look of skepticism. "I mean... he's not the same little twerp he used to be; I'll give him that, but..."

That earned a small laugh from mom as she closed the fridge. "Well, he did grow up eventually," she said, shooting dad a sideways glance. She was light on the surface, but edged with a dose of a warning towards Frank after their last conversation about Jeff and Stephanie.

"It's good you're getting along, just feels a little different lately. Funny how fast things change. One minute you're arguing over the remote, next thing I know, you're inseparable."

Stephanie leaned her hip against the island, arms loosely crossed as she looked between them. "Yeah, well... I guess spending enough time around someone eventually wears you down."

Jeff moved toward the sink, turning on the faucet to rinse his hands.

Dad's eyes stayed on them.

Jeff could feel his dad watching him, like he was trying to find a crack somewhere in his expression. He kept his posture loose, eyes on the sink. It was an attempt to remain casual, but his shoulders were tighter than he wanted them to be.
