Learning Together 01 - Practice
This chapter is a revised version of a story I originally released as a standalone. I hadn't planned to continue it at the time, but due to the amount of positive feedback, and the requests for more, it made me rethink that. The original was written in present tense as an experiment to see if it might feel more immersive, but I've found that carrying that forward into a longer series would be too taxing. So, now with the subsequent chapters being written in a more standardized past tense, it feels inconsistent with the other chapters I've begun, is driving my OCD crazy :)
To keep everything uniform going forward, I've reworked this chapter into past tense. The original present tense version will remain available for those who preferred it, but I'll leave it as a standalone rather than being part of the ongoing series.
If you read the original version, very little has changed in the overall concept, so there's nothing new you'll find in this version. There are things that feel inconsistent, for me personally with future chapters, but I didn't want to completely rework the story that so many others liked, and potentially mess that up. So, all that's really changed is styling to match other works I've done.
Thank you everyone for any understanding of me duplicating a story to put my own mind at ease!
---------------
Stephanie strolled into the living room, head high and shoulders back. One of the most notable things about her was the extreme arch in her lower back that made her already eye-catching backside stand out all the more. The habitual posture of a gymnast. Her walk was stiff but feminine, her clothes were a casual pair of sweatpants over a sleeveless, vibrant red unitard.
She spotted Jeff sitting on the couch, his eyes glued to his laptop. Smirking, she sauntered over and plopped down beside him without bothering to see what he was watching. At twenty-one, she was in college on a gymnastics scholarship. He was still in high school, eighteen and nearing the end of his senior year. They were both on the awkward side of the social scale, each naturally introverted.
Stephanie had been in gymnastics for as long as she could remember, and while she was good, the sport had never seemed to love her as much as she loved it. She had never been among the elite, and she blamed her body. She was never built like the stereotypical gymnast, with more curves than most. Her breasts were larger, her hips wider; she often felt like certain apparatuses worked against her, or that judges marked her down because her lines didn't match the standard. It had left her self-conscious about her body, which in turn made her uneasy around guys.
Many had tried hitting on her, after all, she was a gorgeous gymnast, flexible in ways that drew attention. But when they flirted, she often misread it, assuming they were just being polite or, worse, toying with her. It had made her self-deprecating and dismissive.
Jeff, on the other hand, was the proverbial nerd. He wasn't a bad-looking guy, just socially awkward, which kept him far from the "cool kid" crowd at school. With his social status decided for him, he spent most of his time in books or on his computer. He played a lot of games online and was teaching himself programming, with plans to study engineering in college.
"What's up, Jeff? Still drowning in your nerdy fantasies, I see?" she teased, nudging his arm as she reached for the TV remote to flip through the channels. "Anything good going on with you?"
Jeff had jumped slightly when Stephanie plopped down beside him, her sudden presence startling him out of his focus. He quickly minimized the window he'd had open on his laptop, hoping she hadn't caught a glimpse of the content. Turning to face her, he gave a warm, genuine smile despite the initial surprise.
"Oh hey, Stephanie! Didn't hear you come in," he chuckled softly.
Laughing or smiling had always been his way of covering when he was nervous, and he was definitely nervous now, hoping she hadn't seen anything. His eyes drifted to her outfit, taking in the vibrant red unitard peeking above the waistband of her sweatpants. He swallowed hard, trying not to stare at how it clung to her athletic form.
"I was just, uh, catching up on some, um, coding stuff," he lied, his eyes flicking back to the laptop screen before meeting Stephanie's again. "So, what's up with you? Just finished practice?"
Jeff's eyes darted to her unitard once more before he quickly looked away. Her discomfort in her own skin often made her misinterpret the looks she got. Years of training had left her with little time around guys, and she'd never learned how to interact with them easily. If not for her love of gymnastics, and the scholarship that came with it, she might have quit long ago, knowing she was never going to reach the sport's elite level.
The insecurities that came with that bled into how she saw herself. Even though she could tell the way Jeff looked at her wasn't how he should be looking at his sister, it felt different when it was Jeff. It didn't bother her. In fact, it made her feel... something she couldn't quite define, but she didn't hate it. He was too nerdy to be threatening, and that nerdy quality made his attention oddly endearing. The fact that he was the boy she'd grown up next door to, who had never tried anything before, made her assume he hadn't been interested in her anyway.
"Right, 'coding stuff,'" she said, making air quotes with her fingers, teasing him. She gave him a knowing look but decided to let him off the hook. "Yeah, another day, another practice. Think I'm just gonna chill in front of the TV for the evening and find something to watch."
She stretched her arms above her head, arching her back slightly. The motion drew the tight fabric of her unitard taut across her chest; a detail Jeff didn't miss as he stole a quick glance.
"I'm going to go change quick. I just wanted to get out of there after practice, hence the reason I'm still in my leotard," she added matter-of-factly, reading his glance at her outfit as him wondering why she hadn't changed yet.
Jeff swallowed hard at the stretch and tried not to stare as she walked away. His already hard cock twitched involuntarily. Hoping she didn't notice, he adjusted himself, wondering how her nipples didn't show through that material, and how she managed to flatten her chest in it at all. He'd had a thing for her since the moment he'd first become aware of girls. He'd always tried to suppress it for a number of reasons. First and foremost, she's his sister, but beyond that, he figured she was completely out of his league on top of it.
Now he just hoped he wouldn't do anything to make things awkward between them. She had always been kind to him. She hadn't treated him like the geeky kid cramping her style. Being a few years older, she would drop him off at a friend's house on her way to practice, or buy him and his friends tickets to R-rated movies when he wasn't old enough. She talked to him like he was one of her friends and not the little pest he might have been, considering how much time he always wanted to spend with her. But no matter how much he tried, there were moments he just couldn't help looking.
"You wanna join me?" she asked, plopping back down on the couch and pulling up the streaming service on the TV. As she shifted, trying to get comfortable, her thigh brushed against Jeff's. Thinking nothing of it, she settled in, her thigh a couple of inches away from his.
"Uh, y-yeah, sure. Sounds good," he stammered, his voice slightly higher than usual.
The brief contact hadn't gone unnoticed by him. He closed his laptop and set it aside on the coffee table. As he did, his arm accidentally brushed against her thigh. He jerked back as if burned, a light blush creeping up his neck. Clearing his throat, he tried to act as if nothing had happened. She didn't seem to notice the brief contact. He leaned back on the couch, forcing himself to focus on the TV screen.
"What are we watching? Anything specific in mind, or are we just browsing?" he asked.
Stephanie glanced over at him, noticing the slight flush off his cheeks. She frowned, concerned. "Hey, are you okay? You seem a bit flustered." She reached out, placing a hand on his arm. She had always been affectionate with Jeff growing up, and even now her touch was gentle and reassuring.
Taking his nod as confirmation he was fine, she looked back toward the television. "We can watch whatever you want. I'm easy," she said, her thumb absently rubbing small circles on Jeff's arm. She didn't even realize she was doing it, the action completely natural to her.
Jeff, on the other hand, felt his heart race from Stephanie's touch. He was acutely aware of every point of contact between their bodies. The warmth of her hand seeping into him, sending shivers down his spine, the proximity of her hip to his, the imagined warmth from the briefest touch of her thigh now feeling cold and vacant.
"I was thinking maybe a comedy? Or an action movie? Really, just anything to distract me from the meet coming up," she suggested, her eyes scanning the selection on the screen.
She was so used to being around Jeff that she didn't even consider how her actions or words might inspire his imagination. To her, this was just another normal evening hanging out with her little brother.
As she scrolled through the options, she shifted closer to him, her head resting on his shoulder, making Jeff hyperaware of her hair tickling his cheek, neck, and ear. She was tired from practice, and the comforting warmth of his body was always welcome. She felt safe with him. She always had. He was her anchor, her rock, the one person she could always count on. Jeff had always been there for her whenever she needed him. He had never been too busy, and even if it had seemed like she was disturbing him, he would drop what he was doing to help.
"What do you think? Anything catching your eye?" she asked, her voice soft and slightly muffled against his shoulder.
He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. This is Stephanie, my sister,he reminded himself, but it was getting harder and harder to ignore his feelings for her, especially when she was this close. He knew he shouldn't feel this way, but he couldn't help it. She was beautiful, kind, and she made him feel seen in a way no one else ever had.
"Um, yeah, a comedy sounds good," he managed, his voice strained as he tried to will his erection away. He couldn't think straight with her pressed against him, the scent of her strawberry shampoo filling his head, her soft curves warm against his side.
He tried to focus on the TV screen, but his eyes kept drifting to her face, and to the fullness of her pursed lips as she considered what to watch. He wondered what it would feel like to kiss her, to feel her lips on his, to taste her.
He gave a small shake of his head, as if it might banish the thought. He couldn't think like that. She's my sister, for god's sake, became his silent mantra. But even as he repeated it, he knew it was a losing battle. He was falling for her, hard, and he didn't know how to stop it.
Stephanie smiled softly when Jeff agreed to watch a comedy with her. She loved spending time with him like this, just the two of them, relaxed and comfortable in each other's company. She knew he could be a little awkward around her sometimes, but she had always chalked it up to him being younger and not quite knowing what to say to girls, even if it was just her.
"Great, comedy it is then," she said, lifting her head from his shoulder as she scrolled to the comedy section.
As Stephanie scanned the choices, her attention back on the TV, Jeff stole another glance at her. She had changed into shorts and a tank top, the neckline dipping enough that he could see straight down from his angle. There was no sign of a bra crossing the space beneath her breasts. He missed her warmth immediately, the absence of her touch leaving him with the same hollow chill he'd felt when her thigh brushed against him earlier.
He wanted to pull her back into his arms, to hold her close and never let go.Man, I need to find a distraction,he thought.
He shook his head slightly, trying once more to clear his thoughts. This was getting out of hand. He needed to get a grip on himself before he did something he'd regret, something that could ruin everything between them.
"With so many options, how can it be so hard to find something?" he asked, voicing the age-old question. His voice sounded more normal now that she wasn't pressed up against him. He forced himself to focus on the screen as she scrolled through the choices, trying to find something they would both enjoy.
As she searched, he became aware of the ache in his left arm from holding it awkwardly to avoid touching her. Needing to relax it, he let it drop to his side, and the back of his hand brushed against Stephanie's thigh. This time, he didn't pull away. Instead, he let it rest there, acutely aware of the smoothness of her skin. He swallowed dryly, knowing the thoughts in his head would mortify her if she knew, but lust was starting to outweigh rational thought.Maybe she doesn't mind. Maybe this is a sign she wants me too;he began to rationalize.
He glanced over at Stephanie, trying to gauge her reaction. She didn't seem to have noticed, her attention still fixed on the TV. Reality set in, he was probably reading into an innocent interaction between siblings, seeing signs where there were none. Still, he couldn't deny the way his heart raced when she was near, the way his body reacted to her touch. It only confirmed what he already knew, that his feelings for her were entirely one-sided.
While Jeff wrestled with his thoughts, Stephanie was completely oblivious, focused solely on finding a movie they could both enjoy. She scrolled through the options, pausing occasionally to read a description or watch a trailer. She didn't notice how long his hand lingered against her thigh, the touch inconsequential in her mind. Even if she had noticed, she likely wouldn't have thought twice about it. They "snuggled" all the time, so random body contact was to be expected.
"Ooh, how about this one?" she said excitedly, stopping on a movie she'd been meaning to watch for a while. It was a romantic comedy. She turned to look at Jeff, her eyes bright and eager.
"What do you think?" she asked, her hand coming to rest on his knee as she faced him. The action was innocent and completely platonic in her mind. She'd touched him like this countless times before, a simple gesture of comfort and affection. The overlap of limbs made Jeff's hand instinctively pull away as he felt her touch.
"S-sure, that one looks good. Ready whenever you are," he said.
Stephanie smiled brightly at his agreement, giving his knee a gentle squeeze before turning back to the TV. "Awesome, let's do it then!" she said enthusiastically, hitting play.
As the opening credits rolled, she settled back into the couch, her body naturally leaning toward Jeff's warmth. Falling into their usual movie-time position, she snuggled up against his side, her head finding its familiar spot on his shoulder. This was how they always watched movies together, close, sharing warmth. It was comfortable and familiar, bringing back that sense of safety she'd felt with him when she was younger.
Jeff's heart skipped a beat as she nestled in. Moving his left arm, he wrapped it around her instinctively, pulling her a little closer. He knew he shouldn't be doing it, but he couldn't stop himself. She never thought anything of it, her innocence when it came to guys' usual moves allowed him to take liberties he probably shouldn't. For her, it was simply snuggling. For him, it gave a vantage point he could enjoy without her noticing, feeding fantasies encouraged by the feeling of her body against his.
As the movie went on, she laughed freely at the jokes, her body shaking lightly against him with each chuckle. Jeff's attention was split between the screen and the deep view her neckline offered. The scent of her shampoo drifted up, pulling at another of his senses. It took effort, but he managed to shift his focus back to the movie, piecing together the moments he'd missed while watching her, and settling into simply enjoying both the movie and her little brother.
Every so often, she glanced up at him, checking to see if he was enjoying it too. Not every teenage guy liked a romcom. She loved seeing him laugh, loved the way his eyes crinkled at the corners and his face flushed slightly. It made her heart feel full in a way little else did.
At one particularly funny moment, she burst out laughing, her body shaking against him. He joined in, his own laughter rumbling through his chest and vibrating against her ear. She turned to look up at him, grinning wide.
"This movie is hilarious!" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I'm so glad we chose this one." She saw Jeff smiling as he watched, and he gave a simple nod in acknowledgment before she returned her attention to the screen.
When the movie ended, Stephanie stretched, her muscles yielding to the movement. The arch of her back pushed her chest forward, though she didn't notice the effect. She turned to Jeff with a playful smile. "Was it as good for you as it was for me?" she teased, smirking at her own innuendo.
He nodded again. "Yeah, it was pretty funny." He paused, took a breath, and said, "Hey, Stephanie, can I ask you something?"
"Of course," she replied, her brows furrowing slightly in concern as she saw the seriousness in his eyes. "What's on your mind?" she asked.
She shifted, turning her body to face him more fully, her legs crossing beneath her as she settled in. The movement caused her shorts to ride up slightly, revealing the length of her thigh almost to the crease of her hip.
Jeff took a deep breath, with his heart pounding. He wanted to ask her about helping him talk to girls, but he didn't know how to say it, or if he even should. He had never been good with the opposite sex, and the thought of asking Stephanie, the girl he had secretly lusted after for so long, was terrifying.
"It's just... I've been having some trouble, and I was hoping you could help me with something," he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Stephanie's expression softened. She reached out, placing a hand on his forearms where they rested, folded in his lap. "Of course, Jeff. I'd be happy to help. What is it?" she asked, intent on doing whatever she could. He looked so uncomfortable she just wanted to hug him and make him feel better.
Jeff swallowed hard, trying to find the words. He had never talked about this sort of thing with anyone before, and now he was about to confess it to the one girl who occupied his thoughts the most. Maybe it was obvious, maybe she'd even guessed, but saying it out loud made him feel exposed in the most extreme way. He took another breath and pushed forward.
"It's... it's about girls. I-I don't know how to talk to them. I don't know what to say, or how to act. I'm just... I'm terrible at it," he admitted, his voice unsteady. "I freeze up, I screw it up. I don't know how to make them like me."
Stephanie bit her lip, her brows drawing together as she took in his words. She had always known he could be awkward around girls, but she hadn't realized how uncomfortable even talking about it made him. Her heart went out to him. Hearing that vulnerability in his voice hurt in a way she didn't expect. She wanted to help, to make him feel better, even if she wasn't quite sure how.
"Hey, Jeff," she said softly, her hand giving his arm a reassuring squeeze. "It's okay. You don't have to be good at everything. And you're definitely not terrible at talking to girls. You talk to me all the time, and I'm a girl, right?" She offered a small smile, trying to lighten the mood while searching for something encouraging to say.
